Abstract
The culture of make-up with a long history is directly related to the natural environment and social environment of the times, and is like the guidebook reflectingly the life style of the times. This study is intended to present the direction of make-up in terms of the representation of artistic image by getting away from the mode for decoration. For this purpose, Chapter 2. provided discussion over the answers on the motive for make-up such as decorat theory, sex induc theory and protect theory as to the question of make-up behavior such as why do human beings decorate themselves? and why do they make up?. The history of make-up has developed in from of scarring, tattooing, etc since the ancient primitive era, which can be found in decoration and protective color tone make-up in Egypt. The Medieval Age of make-up revolving around Christianity was followed by the age of ostentation or ornamentation that excessive ornamental make-up revolving around kings and aristocrats was prevalent up to the 18th century along with the Renaissance. This study dealt with the historic background of overall make-up from the modern era that the populace enjoyed more practical make-up owing to industrial revolution in the latter period of the 18th century to the contemporary concept of make-up as part of total fashion. In particular theoretical inquiry was made into Egyptian make-up, through extant mural paintings and literature, that had contributed to the development of more luxurious and diveres ornamentation than any other age for the type of clothing had been open and skin had been much exposed because of the influences of the natural environment Chapter 3. addressed the tendency of art make-up being manifested at present by classifying it into mode make-up and art painting Chapter 4. linked the theory of the work to its practice through the production and analysis of the work. The literature research was centered on the theoretical background of make-up, and 12 face paintings on the gypsum with focus on Egytian patterns. The conclusion was summarized as follows; Firstly, the fact can be seen that human beings have performed make-up instintively as a means of protecting and ornament themselves since the era of struggle for existence. Secondly, the evolutional processes of make-up reflect the life style of the times that has a direct relationship to the changes in natural environment and social environment. Thirdly, judging from the literature for the cultural history, art history and costume history based on stone statures or mural paintings as the material for study on Egyptian make-up, Egytian make-up is similar to present-day make-up, and so it has generated admiration for Egyptian make-up from a present-day perspective. Fourthly, Art make-up manifested in the present-day era attaches importance to the representation of self-consciousness and personality, and has shown many 'artists efforts in diverse respects in relation to its representational technique. This thesis presents that the direction of make-up will have to proceed to expand as one principal artistic image as the use of most make-up gets away from meaning the secondary means for the external representation of individual beauty from the ancient primitive mankind to today. Seeling that the meaning of artistic creation of make-up finds expression in holding constant change and creativity, open-minded attitude and spirit are desperutely required without being tied down to general formality and concepts in order to produce creative and emational works. And it is expected that these efforts will contribute to producing many make-up artists in the future.;오랜 역사를 가지고 있는 화장의 문화는 그 시대의 자연환경과 사회환경에 직접적 연관을 가진 것이며, 그 시대의 생활양식을 반영해 주는 지침서와 같은 것이다.
