19세기 서양 남성복을 응용한 의상디자인 연구

Abstract

패션은 그 사회의 정신과 흐름을 가장 잘 반영하는 예술 분야 중 하나라고 할 수 있다. 산업화와 첨단 과학의 발달, 정보화, 교육의 증가 등의 사회적 변화들은 패션에 중요한 영향을 미친다. 예술의 조형성과 디자인의 요소ㆍ원리를 조화시켜 다양한 범위로 전개되는 현대 패션은 다변화 되어가는 생활 환경 속에서 소비자의 감성과 사회적 변화를 반영한 패션만이 경쟁력을 지닐 수 있다. 이를 위해 복식의 기능적 측면뿐만 아니라 개개인의 정서적 감성과 개성이 반영된 새로운 디자인이 요구되고 있다. 본 연구는 21세기 패션에 있어서 현대 남성복의 원류라고 할 수 있는 19세기 서양 남성복에 관한 연구를 통하여 19세기 서양 남성복의 역사적 형성 과정을 파악하고 복식에 나타난 조형성과 디자인 요소를 분석하였다. 그리고 19세기 중심 사조였던 로맨티시즘(Romanticism)의 특징을 살펴보고 다양한 트렌드가 혼합되어 새롭게 변화하고 있는 현대 패션의 로맨티시즘 사례를 분석하였다. 이를 토대로 본 연구는 현대 로맨틱 패션의 특징적 흐름에 착안하여 19세기 서양 남성복의 요소를 여성복에 도입해 조화로운 로맨티시즘 스타일을 재창출할 수 있는 표현 방법을 모색하고 새로운 로맨티시즘 패션 디자인을 제시하는데 목적이 있다. 본 연구는 패션의 역사 및 로맨티시즘에 관한 문헌 자료, 정기 간행물 그리고 관련 인터넷 사이트를 중심으로한 이미지 자료를 분석해 토대를 마련하였다. 19세기 서양 남성복을 나폴레옹 1세 시대, 왕정복고 시대, 나폴레옹 3세 시대, 세기말로 시대를 구분하여, 코트, 베스트, 셔츠, 바지, 외투의 아이템과 장식 요소들을 살펴보았다. 또한 19세기 서양 남성 복식이 현대 여성복에 미친 영향을 이미지 자료를 통해 분석하였다. 그리고 로맨티시즘의 개념과 발생 배경을 살펴보고 로맨티시즘의 특징을 명확히 규명하여 현대 여성복에 나타난 로맨티시즘 경향을 분석하고 응용된 사례를 살펴보았다. 이를 바탕으로 19세기 서양 남성복과 현대 패션의 면모가 융합되어 새롭게 부각되고 있는 현대 로맨티시즘 경향을 재해석하여 8벌의 도시적인 로맨틱 감성의 여성복을 제작하였다. 이론적 연구를 통해 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 로맨티시즘의 특징을 규명하고 분석하여 레트로, 미니멀, 장식적, 관능적 특징으로 분류된 다양하고 복합적인 현대 패션의 로맨티시즘 경향을 파악하였다. 둘째, 19세기 서양 남성 복식의 코트, 베스트, 셔츠, 바지, 외투의 다양한 형태와 특징, 실루엣, 착장 등은 세련되고 감각적으로 표현되었음을 파악할 수 있었고, 현대 패션에 응용하여 새로운 디자인으로 재창출할 수 있는 무한한 가치를 발견할 수 있었다. 셋째, 복식 표현에 있어서 19세기 서양 남성복의 형태와 특징 그리고 장식적인 요소들을 현대 의상 디자인에 도입하는 것은 다양한 측면에서 복식 표현의 주제가 될 수 있고, 이러한 주제를 통해서 새로운 패션 디자인을 제시할 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이를 토대로 작품 제작을 통해 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 디자인의 원천으로서 19세기 서양 남성복의 요소를 분석하여 현대 패션에 접목시켰을 때 새롭고 다채로운 디자인을 제시할 수 있었다. 둘째, 엄격하고 경직된 19세기 서양 남성복의 요소와 여성적 로맨티시즘을 융합시켜 독특하고 세련된 로맨틱 패션 이미지를 새롭게 창출할 수 있었고, 또한 남성복의 전유물로 여겨졌던 베스트의 활용은 로맨티시즘 패션에 있어서 새로운 스타일링 포인트가 되었다. 셋째, 블랙과 화이트 컬러를 이용한 배색의 사용은 색의 대비에 의한 명시성이 두드러져 이미지가 강조되는 효과를 주었고, 동시에 다양하고 풍부한 장식 요소를 산만하지 않게 깔끔하고 절제된 이미지로 표현할 수 있었다. 넷째, 19세기 서양 남성복에 나타난 프릴과 주름 장식, 매듭과 재단 방법 등은 실루엣에 볼륨감을 주고 의상 표면에 부조적 효과를 부가하여 풍부하고 새로운 조형적 효과를 창출할 수 있었으며 장식적인 효과를 극대화할 수 있어 여성적인 로맨티시즘을 표현하는데 매우 적합하였다. 다섯째, 부드럽고 고급스러운 실크 쉬폰, 실크 샤틴, 울 등의 소재를 사용하여 남성적인 디자인 요소에서 여성스럽고 우아한 로맨티시즘 이미지를 부각시킬 수 있었다. 이상의 결과로 본 논문은 현대 패션의 특징적 흐름에 착안하여 19세기 서양 남성복의 요소를 여성복에 도입해 조화로운 로맨티시즘 스타일을 재창출할 수 있는 표현 방법을 모색하고, 감각있고 창의적인 디자인을 제시하며, 새로운 디자인을 창조하는 새로운 패션 경향의 기초 자료가 되는 시발점이 되었으면 한다. 여성복에 비해 연구가 적고 일관된 남성복에 관한 고정적 사고에 변화를 기대해 보며, 앞으로 서양 남성복을 다각적인 시각에서 연구ㆍ분석하고 다양한 패션 경향과 연계하여 패션 디자인에 적용할 수 있는 효율적이고 창조적인 방법이 다양하게 제시되기를 바란다.;Fashion may be one of art trends well reflecting the spirit and current of a society. Social changes such as industrialization, the development of advanced science, information, and the increase of education have important effects on fashion. Modern fashion is created in a various range by harmonizing art forms and the factors and principles of design. In the life environment that is being diversified, only the fashion reflecting the emotions of customers and the changes of society can have competitiveness. In this context, new design is required to consider not only functional aspect of clothing but also individual emotions and characteristics. The study reviewed the 19th century western men's clothing that probably is the origin of the modern men's clothing in the 21st century to understand the historical development and to analyze the form and design elements of the 19th century western men's clothing. Also reviewed were the characteristics of romanticism that was the main trend of the 19th century and analyzed were the cases of romanticism in modern fashion in which various trends are mixed and make changes. Based on the findings, the study aims to investigate expressional directions enabling the recreation of harmonized romanticist style by applying the characteristics of 19th century western men's clothing to women's clothing on the basis of the characteristics of romantic fashion. The study was conducted based on the analysis of image materials from literature, periodicals and internet sites related to fashion history and romanticism. The 19th century western men's clothing was divided in three periods: Napoleon I, the Restoration of the Royal Regime and Napoleon III. Target items of study were coats, vests, shirts, pants and overcoats as well as accessories. The effects of 19th century western men’s clothing on modern women's clothing were also analyzed using image materials. In addition, the concept and developmental background of romanticism were reviewed and the characteristics of romanticism were clarified. The romanticist trends shown in modern women's clothing were analyzed and the cases of application were studied as well. Based on such a study, 19th century western men’s clothing and the tendency of romanticism that has newly been emerging in modern fashion were reinterpreted; and finally 8 urban style romantic women's clothes were produced. From the results of the study, the following theoretical conclusions were drawn. First, by clarifying and analyzing the characteristics of romanticism, the various complex trends of romanticism-classified as retro, minimal, ornamental, and sensual-in modern fashion were understood. Second, it was rediscovered that for19th century’s men’s clothing, various forms such as coats, vests, shirts, pants, overcoats, and characteristics and silhouette, and wearing style were expressed in a sophisticated and sensual fashion. In the aspect of application to modern clothing, the possibility to develop was found. Third, as for clothing expression, introduction of the style, characteristics, and accessories shown in the 19th century men’s clothing to modern clothing design may provide themes of clothing expression in various aspects. From such themes, new fashion designs may be suggested. Based on the results of the study, 8 clothes were produced and the following results were obtained. First, various new designs could be suggested by analyzing the elements of 19th century western men's clothing as the origin of design and by integrating them into the modern fashion. Second, by integrating the elements of strict and rigid 19th century western men's clothing and feminine romanticism, unique and sophisticated romantic fashion images was newly created. Also the application of vests that used to be considered as exclusive for men's clothing highlighted the new point of style in romanticist fashion. Third, the color arrangement using black and white brought the effect of highlighting the images because the clearness became prominent by the contrast of colors. Fourth, the use of frills, kilts, knots, and cuts shown in the 19th century men's clothing provided the sense of volume and embossment to silhouette resulting in the effect of new form maximizing the accessory effects, which were appropriate in expressing feminine romanticist style. Fifth, by using soft and luxurious materials such as silk chiffon, silk satin, and wool, a feminine and luxurious romanticist image became prominent among the masculine design factors. This study is hoped that the above results can be basic materials used in seeking new expressive methods to regenerate harmonized romanticist style with the application of 19 century western men's clothing factors to women's clothing on the basis of the characteristics of modern fashion, in suggest sensual creative design, and in create new designs. The study is hoped to be the starting point of a new fashion trend. There are only a few studies on women's clothing and there is a consistent and fixed mind on men's clothing. It is hope to see changes in these aspects as well. Future studies are suggested to analyze western men’s clothing from various perspectives and to find various efficient and creative methods so that western men’s clothing can be applied in fashion design by relating the study results to various fashion trends.
