Abstract
We are not born according to our own will. Likewise, we have no choice when it comes to the moment when we die. We can only follow the laws of nature determine our needs create and determine the appropriate environment, and then adapt to it, Society and signers have the responsibility of setting appropriate conditions and turning them into reality. Interior environmental designers cannot act only according to their subjective judgements anymore. Rather, this field has reached the point where it should be systematized through research, based on scientific and rational methods. There is also a link with social welfare research, which is an inevitable by-product of the industrialization and urbanization in modem society. This thesis is for the benefit of the elders who every year are increasingly more of more alienated from other people as well as from society as a whole. This is due to the changing family system and a growing individualism which accompanies urbanization. Furthermore, this 'thesis is also for our own benefit, in that through environment improvement, the elderly will be abel to live the remainder of their lives in comfort and security. In this thesis, for scholastic systematization purposes, interior environmental design was put into, practice through the implementation of system theory and experimental aesthetic theory. Also, in the actual design procedure presentation of Silvertown, this thesis's main research topic, Christopher Alexander's pattern language, which solves problems in a format through recollection theory, was used. These theories were also utilized in order that they will coincide with the molding visualization procedure. The results of the above interior design procedure can be summarized as follows: 1. The objective of this thesis and methods of design are systematized and the scope defined. 2. By study the aged society, this thesis's propriety and necessity are presented by its contemporary nature and its ability to deal with the near future. Also, through an analysis of not only the problems in the system which have arisen with the advent of the aged society but also the present situation, environments that brought about unwanted behavior and lowered adaptability were recognized. 3. In response to the demands of luxiay's society, that general scientific theories be applied, this thesis presents methods by which Silvertown is viewed through on experimental aesthetic procedure. This is based on systematic theories and communication theories. 4. What standard documents, rsearch, and a theoretical approach as a basis, this thesis presents a conceptual framework for interior environmental design and a practical standard for design. 5. On the basis of understanding pattern language, a common language between the designers and the users, this thesis presents an alternative method in interior environmental design by adapting the language to the real interior space. Therefore the author attempted to satisfy the designer's fundamental objective of improving man's life through interior environmental design as well as to give meaning to the latter part of man's life by planning better facilities for the elderly. In addition, these facilties must be in accordance with a country's level of development. Korean must now meet the demands of growing elderly class by paying more attention to the interior of facilities for the elderly and by doing more research in order that the elderly may be able to spend their "golden years" in a more pleasant atmosphere.
