Abstract
The purpse of this study is to inverstigate children's understanding of a promise and their experience with it, and how their moral judgement related to it varies with age. The questions of this study are as follows: 1. How does children's understalding of a promise vary with age? 2. How does children's experience with a promise vary with age? 3. How does children's moral judgement relate to a promise vary with age? The subject of this study was 80 children of 3,4,5,6 years old in Two kindergartens and one elementary school in seoul. The method of this study was interview with revised and supplemented the questionaire items which initiated by Chomsky and the picture story by Mant & perner. The results of the study are as follows: 1. Children's understanding of a promise begins to rise when they are about three or four years old, and it becomes complete when they are five or six years old. Their understanding, however, is based on the heteronomous regulation, that is, one must keep his promise unconditionally, rather than reciprocal trust. 2. children's experience with a promise begin mainly with their parent when they are about three or four years old, and at five or six age. It is expanded by the relationship with others around them, mainly with friends. And as for the relationship between the object of a promise and children, experience with adult mainly with parent consists a authority-obedience relationship, and experence with others of same age mainly with friends consists on equal, cooperative relationship. 3. As for children's moral judgement related to a promise, children tend to think that the result is more important than intention before they are four years old, and think reversely when they are five or six years old.
