뮤지컬 아이다와 라이온 킹을 통해서 본 엘튼 존의 뮤지컬 음악 스타일 연구

Abstract

‘멀티미디어 시대’로 불리는 21세기는 문화의 시대로 예술 장르에서 이제 하나의 산업으로 성장해 나가는 독립된 분야로서 자리 잡고 있다. 특히 뮤지컬에 있어서 음악의 역할은 뮤지컬의 내용을 전달하는 기능 외에, 시간적, 공간적 배경을 설명해 주거나 등장인물의 내면 심리를 나타내 준다. 또한 여러 분야가 결합된 종합 예술로써 뮤지컬은 관련 상품으로 인한 새로운 부가가치를 창출할 수 있는 가능성이 과거에 비해 매우 넓고 다양해졌고, 따라서 뮤지컬 음악의 발전적 과제가 요구되고 있다. 본 연구는 뮤지컬 음악의 중요성을 인식하고 브로드웨이 스타일의 뮤지컬 음악가 엘튼 존(Elton John, 1947～)의 대표적 작품인 뮤지컬<아이다(Aida, 2000)>와 <라이온 킹(Lion King, 1998)>의 음악 분석을 통하여 그의 음악적 스타일을 연구하고, 브로드웨이 뮤지컬에 미친 영향을 고찰하고자 한다. 연구의 주제로 선정된 <아이다>는 토니상 ‘작곡상’(Best Original Score)과 그래미 ‘뮤지컬 앨범상’(Best Musical Show Album)상을 수상하였으며, <라이온 킹>은 토니상 ’최우수음악상'(Best Music)을 수상한 작품으로 엘튼 존만의 뚜렷한 음악적 스타일을 인정받았던 작품이며, 두 작품 모두 작사가 팀 라이스와 콤비로 만들어낸 작품으로 그들만의 뮤지컬 특징과 스타일을 살펴 볼 수 있다는 점에서 분석의 의미를 찾을 수 있다. 연구 방법에 있어서 먼저 역사적인 고찰로 뮤지컬의 발전과정에 따른 시대적 흐름과 뮤지컬의 경향을 알아보았다. 또한 엘튼 존의 생애 및 작품경향을 살펴보고, 그의 음악적 배경과 스토리 전개에 따른 음악적 구성 요소의 특징을 통해 엘튼 존의 뮤지컬 음악 스타일을 분석하였다. 이집트 고대시대에 꽃피운 남녀 간의 사랑이야기 <아이다>와 아프리카 대자연의 광활함과 그곳에서 사는 동물들의 삶과 사랑이야기 <라이온 킹>을 엘튼 존이 어떻게 그려내고 이끌어 가는지 연구하기 위해 음악의 구성을 스토리의 전개에 따라 등장하는 곡의 형식, 조성 및 화성, 악기편성, 템포와 박자, 리듬, 멜로디와 음악의 전체적인 분위기 등을 분석하였는데 이와 같이 다양한 이미지를 다채로운 방법으로 풀어내기 위해 엘튼 존은 여러 방법을 사용하였다. 정형화된 틀에서 벗어난 여러 장르의 리듬 사용, 자유로운 전조, 다양한 형태를 사용한 주제 테마의 변형 또는 변주 등 예상하지 못했던 부분들로 인하여 관객들에게 의외성을 부여한다. 또한 멜로디 진행을 사용해 주인공의 심리적인 변화를 표현해주는 것은 물론 악기에 등장인물의 성격을 부여하여 작품 전반적으로 통일성을 주어 음악 자체만으로도 스토리를 이해할 수 있도록 하고 있다. 본 연구를 통해서 엘튼 존의 음악은 등장인물을 부각시켜주고 곡의 극적 상황의 느낌을 보충하거나 고조시키며, 특유의 대중적인 멜로디는 관객들로 하여금 뮤지컬에 더욱 몰입할 수 있게 하여 감정 이입을 시키는 역할을 한다. 앞으로 이러한 뮤지컬 음악에 대한 보다 더 깊은 이해와 연구가 따라야 한다는 것을 인식하고 뮤지컬 음악의 발전을 위해 더욱 체계적이고 지속적인 연구가 이루어져야 할 것이다.;The 21st century which is called ‘the multimedia era’ is the cultural era, and musical music is being positioned as an independent growing field as one of industries in the genres of art. In particular, the role of music in musicals explains the background of time and space apart from delivering the contents of musicals, and demonstrates the internal psychology of characters. Moreover, as comprehensive art is a coupling of diverse fields, musicals are open to wider opportunities for generating a new value added with related products than they are before. Accordingly, it is required to pursue a developmental project in musical music. With an understanding of the importance of musical music, this study is aimed to identify the musical style Elton John(1947~) who is a Broadway style musical musician through an analysis of music in his representative musical <Aida, 2000> and <Lion King, 1998>, and to review the influence of his musical music on Broadway musicals. <Aida> which was selected as a topic of this study was awarded the ‘Best Original Score’ prize in the Tony Award, and the ‘Best Musical Show Album’ in the Grammy Award. Also, <Lion King> was awarded the ‘Best Music’ prize in the Tony Award, and made Elton John recognized with his own unique musical style. The analysis is meaningful in that the features and style of Elton John’s own musicals were reviewed. As for study methods, first, the flow of times and the musical trend were identified pursuant to the development procedure as historical contemplation. Also, Elton John’s life and trend of his works were reviewed and his musical music style was analyzed through the features of musical compositional components pursuant to his musical background and the development of a story. In order to find out how Elton John pictured and led <Aida> which is a love story of a man and a woman in the ancient Egyptian period, and <Lion King> which is a story of life and love of animals that lived in great nature of Africa while showing the broadness of great nature of Africa, musical composition was analyzed according to the form of music, composition and harmony, the composition of musical instruments, tempo and beat, rhythm, melody, and overall atmosphere of music that appear according to the development of a story were analyzed. Elton John used diverse methods for unfolding various images with diversified methods as such. He gives a surprise to spectators with unexpected preparations such as the use of rhythms of diverse genres, which avoided a stereotyped framework, free transition, and transformation or variation of theme with the use of diverse forms. Furthermore, not only does he express mental changes of antagonists by using the proceeding of melody, but also enable spectators to understand a story only by music itself by adding consistency to his works in general inducing by introducing the personality of characters to musical instruments. Through this study, it was found that Elton John’s music plays a role of making spectators feel empathy in musicals by highlighting characters, supplementing or enhancing the feeling of dramatic situations in music, and having spectators more absorbed in musicals. Therefore, it needs to have more systematic and continued studies by perceiving that there should be more in-depth interest and studies for such musical music.
