그림이야기책 속에 나타난 꿈과 공상의 시각적 표현

Abstract

최근 경기 불황에도 불구하고 국내의 그림책 시장은 생동감이 넘친다. 서점에 나갈 때 마다 그림책 코너를 둘러보는 사람들을 많이 볼 수 있고 또한 그러한 사람들의 욕구를 충족하기 위해서인지 매번 다양하고 새로운 그림책을 접할 수 있다. 그림책 시장의 확장과 더불어 또한 웬만한 외국의 걸작 그림책이 거의 우리나라에 소개되었다. 더구나 요즘은 그림책들이 외국과 거의 동시에 국내에서도 번역본이 출간되고 있다. 이러한 추세는 비단 외국 책이 우리나라에 수입되어지는 것 뿐 아니라 볼로냐 아동도서전에서 우리나라의 그림책들이 호평을 받았다는 소식으로, 이제는 우리나라의 창작 그림책도 국제적으로도 인정받기 시작하였음을 보여주고 있다. 이러한 즐거운 소식들은 특정 장르에만 들어나는 것 같아 안타까움을 준다. 그림책에서 보여주는 눈부신 발전은 그림이야기책에 삽입되는 삽화에까지 그 영향력을 미치지 못하고 있다. 그림이야기책에서의 그림은 그림책에서와 같이 글과 그림의 상호 보완적인 관계라기보다는 여전히 텍스트가 주가 되고 삽화가 곁들어진 동화책으로 인식되고 그렇게 그려지고 있다. 다시 말해 아동도서에서의 삽화는 그림으로 이야기를 전개하거나 문장에 없는 장면을 묘사하는 등의 작업은 거의 하지 않고 단지 문장의 어느 장면을 그릴까 하는 점에만 주의를 기울이고 있다. 이에 본 논문에서는 아동문학으로 잘 알려진 책 중에 1904년에 쓰인 루시 모드 몽고메리의「빨간 머리 앤」이라는 작품을 통해 기존 삽화의 성격을 벗어나, 앤이라는 캐릭터가 갖고 있는 공상과 상상을 중심으로 작품을 전개하고자 한다. 기존에 보여주었던 상황을 중심으로 구성된 일러스트가 아닌, 11살 난 앤의 재치 있고 감상적인 공상들과 사물을 바라보고 사건을 해석하는 과정에서 묘사되었던 상상력과 내면의 심리상태를 시각화 하여, 이 책을 읽는 독자들에게 글이 주는 즐거움뿐만 아니라 그림이 또 다른 독립된 작품으로써 인식되어 심미적 감상력을 제공하길 바란다. 또한 주인공의 내면에서 일어나는 상상력을 시각적 자극을 통해 독자에게 전달되어 다양한 상상력과 공상력으로 이끌어 주기를 기대한다. 미술사적으로 볼 때 상상이나 꿈, 환상을 표현한 작가들이 많이 있었다. 특히나 자기애, 자아도취의 성향을 가지고 그린 작가들은 대체로 19세기 말이나 20세기 초엽의 표현주의 작가들이나 초현실주의 작가들에서 더 많이 찾아 볼 수 있다. 이들은 보이는 사물을 아름답게 그리는 것을 목적으로 하기보다, 보이는 것과 함께 보이지 않는 내면세계의 상상이나 무의식의 세계를 함께 표현하려 하였다. 하지만 이들은 좋은 교육과 이론을 바탕으로 그 안에서 다듬어 지고, 조형적으로도 매우 세련된 기술을 갖고 그들만의 유파를 형성하였다. 이와는 달리 나이브(Naive) 미술은 특정 유파를 형성하지 않으면서, 정규 미술 교육을 받지 않고 어린이와 같은 순진무구함과 자연스럽고 꾸밈없는 작품을 하는 예술가들의 이름이다. 이들은 이른바 문명적인 세련된 기교와도 담을 쌓은 채, 기교 이전의 순수한 즐거움과 충동적 본능으로, 자연 발생적인 소박함과 치졸함, 특이한 시각, 그리고 양식화의 특징을 보이고 있다. 바로 이러한 나이브(Naive)의 특성이「빨간 머리 앤」이라는 작품에서 보여주는 주인공의 성격, 다시 말해 많은 시간을 상상으로 보내는 낭만적인 몽상가이며 뛰어난 화술을 갖고 있지만 그 내면에 흐르는 순수함과 서정적인 감성, 소박한 꿈을 꾸는 앤의 상상을 시각화하는데 주요한 방향 제시를 할 것이다. 눈에 보이는 것뿐만 아니라 보이지 않는 공상이나 상상과 같이 이성으로 감추어졌던 세계를 시각화 하는데 중점을 두어 독자들의 감성을 자극하고 즐거운 상상을 공유하는 일러스트레이션을 제시해 보고자 한다.;The paper examined dream and fancy of a character named "Anne of Green Gables " of Lucy Maud Montgomery, a well-known children literature writer, which was free from the nature of existing illustrations. Seven illustrations described fancy of eleven years old witty and sentimental Anne to give readers reading pleasure and to elevate imagination as well as fancy as another work of illustration. Prior to research on expressions of the fancy of internal world of characters of a work, not only understanding of children literature but also theoretical background on roles of illustrations was required. Then, a research should be made to make use of visual language and to visualize imagination and fancy of internal world. The theoretical background and visual language could make direction of a work in detail. The first chapter investigated difference between picture book and illustrated book to help understand illustrated book and to investigate roles of illustrations of illustrated book. The following chapter described Naive artists who produced works having naivety and nature like children to be given no regular art education of visual language and to be isolated from polished techniques and to have pure pleasure before techniques, impulsive instinct, natural simplicity, peculiar viewpoints and formalization, etc: And, the chapter interpreted internal world of characters of a work by understanding naive art and researching aesthetic consciousness to suggest expression ways making internal sensibility world. Lastly, the paper made theoretical background by production purposes, the use of techniques and materials and work explanations at expression methods of works. The theoretical background and visual researches expressed psychological world as well as free imagination that characters of children literature had, so that the illustrations of novels were not supplementary means of writings but production of visual interests as well as interesting imagination while relying upon emotional consensus with illustrations.
