Abstract
Digital technologies in the 21th century have rapidly changed our way of life. The term ‘digital’ has become social and cultural phenomena. The advent of new media changes not only modes of expression in the arts but also social values overall. The expansion of art techniques can be discussed in relationships between art and media, and art and technologies. Ranges of art has been expanding from painting, sculpture, architecture to installation, media art, and so forth. With the change of media, the emergence of concept of object have influenced expansion of the mode of expression and even the concept of art in modern art. From the perspective of art history, a canvas is a traditional mean to represent realities on a flat support. The cubist collages and dadaist technique of photomontage reflect modernist desire for something new and photographic characteristics of technological reproduction. Analogue photomontage was diversified and innovated by Dadaist in Berlin in the 1920s. Artists like John Heartfield especially used the method to politically satirize and criticize ironies of German society. The method focuses on sens of seeing realities and culture. It was very popular in the form of postcards, posters, and book covers made by not only artists but also the public. Essentially, the photomontage technique is expression of imagination by strange and attractive assemblage. Advance of the Internet and technologies enabled us to synthesize, replicate, and reproduce countless images. Images of the Digital era are transformed into dimensions of information through non-substantiality and unlimited time and space of virtuality created by the Internet. Using digital media has brought great innovation different from the result of the former technological media. Computerized digital photo montage has emerged on the Internet in the form of parodies and diversity along with other media artworks such as paintings and photographic images. The process can be understood by changes in cultural codes and paradigm of image generation. From this theoretical background, I review aesthetic aspects and meanings of photomontage. I seek to expand my modes of expression through unlimited reproduction created by digital media. My study has examined analogue and digital photomontage to understand the development of media and technologies. The study also seeks to find the direction of expanding art expressions. Therefore, the study finds that the photomontage transformed the function of art into integration of art and life along with the transformation of perceptions. The change of media is not merely the change of tools. It has brought the change of paradigm as a whole and given a rationale for expression of extrinsic factors.
