The Theoretical Study of the Korean Wave as a Global Cultural Flow

Abstract

이 논문은 최근 아시아를 휩쓸고 있는 ‘한류’의 형성 과정과 실체를 세계화의 흐름 안에서 파악하고자 하는 시도이다. 현재 한국 정부나 관련 기업, 학계에서는 한류 지속화 방안에 대한 논의가 활발히 진행되고 있지만, 정작 한류의 본질에 대한 체계적인 이해가 뒷받침되고 있지 못하다. 이 논문은 한류를 한국이 만들어낸 문화 상품이자 사회적 현상으로 보는 기존의 시각에서 벗어나 세계화가 이끄는 문화적 변화의 한 단면으로 보고, 인류학자Arjun Appadurai의 ‘범세계적 문화 흐름(global cultural flow)’ 모델을 도입했다. 우리가 살고 있는 현대에는 전자 매스 미디어의 등장과 대규모 인구이동으로 국경을 초월한 문화의 전파가 가능해졌고, 이러한 초국가적 문화 흐름이 각 지역의 특수한 환경과 문화적 개성과 융화되어 개개인의 새로운 문화 경험을 창조해 내고 있다. 한류 역시, 최근 아시아 지역의 전자 미디어의 발달과 문화 시장의 개방으로 다양한 문화적 흐름이 나타나고, 수용자의 참여 폭이 커지면서 형성된 하나의 범세계적 문화 흐름 중의 하나이다. 이 문화 흐름은 현지 특성과 다른 세계적 흐름과 교류하며 자유롭게 변화하여 그 방향을 예측할 수 없고, 현지 수용자들로 이루어진 초국가적 공동체를 만들어낸다. 우리가 흔히 ‘한류 열풍’이라고 일컫는 것은 한류라는 문화적 흐름에 열광적으로 호응하는 수용자 공동체의 결성과 이들의 활동을 가리키는 것이다. 하나의 문화 상품, 또는 현상으로 객체화된 한류는 곧 한국의 소유물로 규정되고, 한류에 대한 아시아 수용자의 적극적인 반응은 한국 문화산업의 우수성으로 귀결된다. 하지만 한류는 세계 각지에 한국의 문화 콘텐츠를 전달하는 문화 흐름이고 수용자들이 경험하는 한국 문화는 문화 흐름과 세계적 정세, 현지 사정에 따라 변형된 형태이다. 즉, 한국을 떠난 한류는 이미 한국의 소유가 아닐 뿐 더러 그 진행 방향, 성격, 지속성 여부 역시 한국의 영향력을 벗어나 있는 것이다. 그러므로, 정부의 올바른 한류 정책 수립을 위해서는, 먼저 이러한 문화 흐름의 초국가적 속성과 자유로운 변형 능력을 이해하고 한류라는 용어의 뜻과 사용 범위를 정립한 뒤 한류의 수용 양상과 파생되는 변화들에 대한 연구가 선행되어야 할 것이다.;This is an attempt to understand the dynamics of the Korean Wave, a recent cultural movement sweeping Asia and beyond. Although there have been much heated dialogues on how to sustain the Korean Wave among the Korean government, media corporations, and academics, they lack in-depth observations on the essence of the Korean Wave. This paper seeks to alternate the existing view of the Korean Wave as a cultural product, or social phenomenon with the global cultural flow model originated by anthropologist Arjun Appadurai. In the current epoch of globalization, the advent of electronic media and mass migration have triggered the emergence of complex, disjunctive, and overlapping cultural flows across national boundaries. These flows create transnational imagined communities based on collective experience of a certain dimension of cultural flows. Connectivity of globalization lifts individuals out of local particularities and connects people in distant locations. The Korean Wave occurred on the grounds that the opening of Asian media market and development of electronic media have created complex cultural flows and deterritorialized audience. As a cultural flow, the Korean Wave mixes with local cultural experience and other global flows and creates various cultural hybrids. What is commonly called as the ¨Korean Wave phenomenon〃 is in fact fervent audience reception to the Korean cultural flows. The current substantialization of the Korean Wave (as a cultural product) leads to the misconception of the Korean Wave as a national belonging, and accordingly, attribution of the sudden popularity of Korean cultural contents across Asia to the better quality of (our) Korean culture than others. However, we cannot assume the Korean Wave belongs to Korean since the nation-state is only one node of the volatile dynamics of a cultural flow. Hence, Korean policymakers should first understand the trans-nationality of the Korean Wave as a global cultural flow and its hybridization process, and build clear definitions of the Korean Wave terminology. Also, further study on the audience reception to the Korean Wave across different regions should be undertaken to determine matching policy directions on the Korean Wave.
