Title: The Impact of Ancient Connectivity of the Korean Peninsula and Japanese Archipelago on the Present Genetic Relationships of Spined Loaches (Family: Cobitidae)

Abstract: Disconnected water systems cause geographical isolation for freshwater fish and are a determinant factor in creating their distinctive lineage and distribution pattern. Native freshwater fish in South Korea, Cobitis nalbanti, exhibited such typical geographic isolation. However, it left questions on the origin of a non-monophyletic lineage close to Japanese Cobitis species overseas within its species boundary and mito-nuclear discordance. This evolutionary issue of freshwater fish species across seas implies the impact of the Korean Peninsula and Japanese Archipelago’s historical connectivity in the ice ages on contacts of ancestral species between the countries. Thus, to unravel the environmental impact on the evolution of Cobitis fish, I utilized whole-genome sequence data from several Cobitis species in Korea and Japan, methods of species tree inference with multispecies coalescent, mitogenome tree construction, introgression test, demographic history analysis with de novo assembled reference, and modeling of paleo-river systems. As a result, the questionable lineage, C. nalbanti TJ, was found to constitute a clade with species in the Kyushu area of Japan. This clade showed significant evidence of genetic introgression into C. tetralineata, suggesting the breakdown of dispersal barriers of seas and, in turn, contacts with other Cobitis species through paleo-river systems between Korea and Japan during the period of lowered sea levels. Additionally, the mito-nuclear discordance of C. nalbanti TJ may be a consequence of ancient hybridization with the C. nalbanti sensu stricto. This research on freshwater fish provides insights into the spatial-temporal features and effects of paleo-river systems around the southern Korean Peninsula and Japanese Archipelago on their freshwater fish species. The research also explores the potential existence of aquatic cryptic species or hidden phylogenetic lineages that may be living around the coastal areas where the impact of past dynamic habitat disconnection and reconnection were likely concentrated.;단절된 수계는 민물고기의 지리적 고립을 유발하고, 이들의 독특한 진화적 계통 및 분포 패턴을 만드는 데 결정적 요인이 된다. 2024-01-01T00:00:00ZPopulation genetic structure of two sister loach species (Iksookima hugowolfeldi and I. longicorpa): paleo-drainage systems, river capture, and distribution of them.

Title: Population genetic structure of two sister loach species (Iksookima hugowolfeldi and I. longicorpa): paleo-drainage systems, river capture, and distribution of them.
Ewha Authors: 최다송
Abstract: Two endemic loach species, Iksookima hugowolfeldi and I. longicorpa, are distributed in the rivers and streams flowing into the south and west coasts of the southern region of the Korean Peninsula. Previous taxonomic and phylogenetic studies showed that they are sister species, but no studies have been yet done to identify their true geographic boundaries and population genetic structure within each species. Thus, we aimed to solve these two questions based on systematic amplings within the known range of the two species and multi-locus genetic markers. Population DNA data of a mitochondrial and three nuclear genes from 21 populations representing the main rivers, independent small rivers, and islands of the species’ distributional ranges were analyzed. As a result, the two sister species were found not to be monophyletic natural groups, respectively, but constituted eight distinct clades, largely corresponding to the main rivers. The populations from small independent rivers and islands showed some degree of isolation, constituting distinct clades. However, populations from the type localities of the sister species, the Yeongsan River for I. hugowolfeldi and Seomjin River for I. longicorpa, belonged to an identical genetic cluster, strongly indicating at least a past event of river capture through upper streams between the two rivers. The present results suggest that not only isolating forces of geographic distance and direction of the river drainage systems but also past events of contacts between isolated river drainage systems through river capture or reconnection via paleo-drainage systems when sea level was low in glacial periods are very important environmental factors for understanding the evolution and distribution of these two species and potentially other freshwater fish in East Asia.;한반도 남해안과 서해안으로 유입되는 강과 하천에는 고유한 두 종의 종개인 남방종개(Iksukima hugowolfeldi)와 왕종개(I. longicorpa)가 분포하고 있다. 2024-01-01T00:00:00ZHow do biogeographic barriers regulate the distributions of Hynobius salamanders?

Abstract: Understanding biogeographic barriers is vital for comprehending species distribution patterns. These barriers, shaped by factors such as gene flow, climate, and competition, play a crucial role in ecological dynamics. With their limited mobility, Amphibians serve as valuable subjects for investigating these barriers. Employing Ecological Niche Models (ENMs) facilitates the assessment of environmental preferences and barriers encountered by species. The study focuses on seven Hynobius salamander species in South Korea. We developed environmental niche models in MAXENT, utilizing 16 environmental variables to conduct three sets of tests for each species pair. We first ran Niche Requirement Tests, including identity and background similarity tests, to determine whether the species pairs have different niche requirement then conducted Lineage-Breaking Tests to explore whether species' range boundaries aligned with environmental shifts. Finally, we conducted Ribbon Tests to investigate whether unsuitable habitats separated contact zones between species. The models for each species demonstrated high performance (AUC > 0.7) in predicting habitat suitability. The Niche Requirement Tests revealed distinct ecological niches among species pairs, the Lineage-Breaking Test supported the presence of abrupt environmental transitions contributing to diversification and the Ribbon Tests showed the existence of unsuitable habitats separating several species pairs. This study confirmed the presence of biogeographic barriers influencing Hynobius salamanders in South Korea. These barriers impact species dispersal, leading to the development of distinct ecological niches. The identified barriers could be associated with physical obstacles or historical events, underscoring their significance in species conservation and the understanding of speciation mechanisms.;생물지리적 장벽을 이해하는 것은 종의 분포 패턴을 이해하는 데 필수적이다.
2024-01-01T00:00:00ZInvestigating the body shape drag coefficient of beetles (Coleoptera) with different foraging strategies using 3D scanned models

Title: Investigating the body shape drag coefficient of beetles (Coleoptera) with different foraging strategies using 3D scanned models
Ewha Authors: Suelen Saggiorato Seidler
Abstract: In many beetle species, foraging typically involves movements of the whole body, and successful foraging may be related to body shape, velocity, and hydrodynamic/aerodynamic efficiency. Insects with lower drag coefficients are likely to have more efficient flight or swimming capabilities. This confers advantages in terms of energy, maneuverability, and overall performance. Predatory beetles require fast-forward acceleration and strikes to chase their prey, and hence their drag coefficient is expected to be lower compared to species with more stationary foraging styles. Natural selection may favor insects with streamlined body shapes that minimize drag.
Here, we aim to estimate the body shape drag coefficient of different foraging styles in aquatic and terrestrial beetles: the carnivorous Cybister chinensis (Dystiscidae), the herbivorous Hydrophilus acuminatus (Hydrophilidae), the herbivorous Pseudotorynorrhina japonica (scarabaeidae) for comparison. We took a series of 2D pictures of the specimen from multiple angles using a 3D scanner. Utilizing Zephyr 3DF software, we were able to generate a 3D model to produce more detailed representations of the beetle geometry. Using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), a software used to simulate complex fluid flow and assess the hydrodynamics and aerodynamics around a body., we were able to calculate the drag coefficient of these three species for hydrodynamic efficiency. The results for the CFD simulation were consistent with the drag coefficient number found in the literature, the results were considerably different among three species. When a 3D model was set to face the flow at a velocity of 0.1 m/s, the drag coefficient number was 0.430 for Cybister chinensis, 0.477 for Hydrophilus acuminatus, 0.376 for Pseudotorynorrhina japonica. These findings highlight the significance of body shape and drag coefficient in determining the hydrodynamic efficiency of beetles, providing valuable insights into their evolutionary adaptations and ecological performance.;많은 딱정벌레 종에서 채집은 일반적으로 몸 전체의 움직임을 포함하며, 성공적인 채집은 몸 모양, 속도 및 유체 역학/공기 역학 효율성과 관련이 있을 수 있습니다.
