Ewha Authors:
This study aims to analyze the communities depicted in the novels of Yoon Heung-gil during the industrialization period of the 1970s and 1980s. Rather than limiting the view of these communities as oppositional groups based on the epistemological awakening of intellectuals, this research expands the concept to communities interconnected at an ontological level. In Yoon Heung-gil's novels, the pursuit of new communities does not rely on individual characteristics such as knowledge or class, but rather on an ontological shift stemming from recognizing a shared condition: surviving under a capitalist order. In other words, this change occurs among individuals who decide to preserve both their own lives and those of others due to this interconnectedness. The study explores through various theoretical frameworks of community: Nancy's "the inoperative community", Blanchot’s "the unavowable community”, Butler's community grounded in vulnerability and interdependence (as opposed to independence and self-reliance), and Negri's multitude based on commonality. Each chapter discusses the dual nature of desire within capitalist structure, the confirmation of community through class consciousness fragmentation, and the reshaping of institutions by the resistance of subjects, in the context of the gradual recognition and formation of communities connected at an ontological level. Chapter II, "Capital Inclusion and the Duality of Power," focuses on efforts to revive expanded community consciousness by exploring the duality of desire, the inclusion and escape within the realm of globalized capital power. In Yoon Heung-gil's novels, the rural areas once considered antithetical to the cruel city, are also subjected to the capitalist structure through development and assimilation. Even families are manipulated by nations grounded in capital order. Therefore, the expansion of community by characters who once persisted the narrow concepts, such as ideological groups, demonstrates a surplus not entirely encompassed by capital. This process is facilitated by the maternal tolerance and love, and the effort to avoid repeating conflict. Chapter III, "Class Consciousness and the Fragility of Hierarchy," examines the emergence of class consciousness through spatial hierarchies, a result of the Seoul-centric urban development, and the subsequent development of a fabricated class consciousness among intellectuals. However, the disintegration of intellectual identity and the death of the subject, resulting from the government's violent exception of subject under the name of urban redevelopment, led to fractures in class consciousness. We can observe the potential of the multitude to oppose capital's absurdities. 'Gwangju-daedanji Uprising' prominently features the condensed desire for 'home,' which has transformed into a space for profit growth. Simultaneously, it highlights the affectation of intellectuals who desperately yearn for ‘home’, and still sustain the clear hierarchy. Characters deceiving both themselves and others eventually recognize their capabilities as a multitude through repeated humiliation by the neglect of others' hardships. The agents for the institutional restructuring are identified by this realization of the multitude, rather than capital's provisions or societal hierarchy.
Chapter IV, "Institution Building and the Stasis of Sovereignty," focuses on the practices of subjects who solidify reality's institutions within the illusions imposed by capital. Also, we examine the collective resistance to envision new directions and restore the animality, thereby halting sovereignty. The ultimate goal of subjects gathered as multitudes is re-institutionalization of power in a different manner. Power sustains institutions by constraining subjects within the system by demonstrating the impossible utopia and the inescapable nature of reality. However, since subjects are the fundamental elements of institutions, the multitude's resistance, seeking new imagination and uncast animalism, conveys a counterpower to halt the conventional sovereignty systems. The new community in Yoon Heung-gil's novel is thus based not on the partial awareness or selective ethical stance of some subjects, but on the profound realization that our lives are inevitably intertwined. His insights, which sought to question the true meaning of human existence and the value of life during the industrialization era, remain a potent message today, even where the capitalist order erodes all spheres, divides the self and the other, and enforces narrow self-interest and survival as virtues.2024-01-01T00:00:00Z이호철 소설에 나타난 주체 형성과 통치성 연구정현지https://dspace.ewha.ac.kr/handle/2015.oak/2675992024-02-14T02:52:36Z2024-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: 이호철 소설에 나타난 주체 형성과 통치성 연구

Abstract: This study aims to examine the literary response of Lee Ho-chul to the contemporary literary field, which sought to establish a modern subject by focusing on the types of characters in his novels from the 1960s to the 1980s. It seeks to reveal that Lee Ho-chul's process of establishing himself within South Korean society and the literary circle was not a mere assimilation, but involved his own strategic approaches, securing distinctiveness in his novels. This arises from a motive to find new possibilities between the extremes of research that have previously understood Lee Ho-chul as either a petit-bourgeois writer conforming to the system or a critical intellectual resisting it. To achieve this, the paper utilizes Michel Foucault's concept of ‘Governmentality’ to interpret the complex power relations in Lee Ho-chul's novels, moving beyond binary thought of conformity and resistance.
Foucault's concept of governmentality allows us to simultaneously understand the mechanisms of power operating throughout society and its effects in terms of subjectification. In this regard, the concept is an effective framework to reveal how Lee Ho-chul responded to existing power mechanisms by creating new forms of subjects through his literary works. Moreover, Foucault's discussion provides clues for interpreting the characters in Lee Ho-chul's novels not merely as beings passively absorbed by power, but as active agents choosing their actions. Therefore, this paper aims primarily to interpret the characters in Lee Ho-chul's novels in detaill from the 1960s to the 1980s using Foucault's concept of governmentality. Ultimately, it seeks to highlight the relationship between Lee Ho-chul and the literary field of the time, especially focusing on his distinctiveness.
After the debate on petit-bourgeois and citizen was triggered in the Korean literary field in the late 1960s, the ideal of the citizen was promoted while criticizing the petit-bourgeois, and in the 1970s to 1980s, there was a movement to establish the Minjung and the nation's people as the main subject. The literary field's interest in what constitutes a modern subject aligns with the theories of ‘petit-bourgeois literature’, ‘popular literature’, and ‘national literature’ proposed in the 1960s to 1980s. Lee Ho-chul, who was actively writing during this period, shared the literary concerns of his time but also showed his distinction through his unique literary subjects. Thus, this paper focuses on Lee Ho-chul's novels from the 1960s to 1980s, intending to move beyond the generalized categorization of his characters as ‘petit-bourgeois’ and examine them as ‘petit-bourgeois’, ‘the masses(Daejung)’, and ‘the national’, to ultimately reveal how he created new forms of subjects and responded literarily.
For this purpose, this paper primarily studies 『Sosimin』, 『Seoul is Full』, 『Door』, and 『Southerners and Northerners』, examining the portrayal of ‘the petit-bourgeois’, ‘the masses’, ‘the critical intellectual’ and ‘the national people’ in these novels. Previously, these characters were considered private beings who conform to power, but this paper aims to identify the complex aspects of power that cannot be simply asserted through binary logic of conformity/resistance or public/private. Furthermore, it seeks to reveal that the author Lee Ho-chul, by forming new subject types, participated in the formation of modern literary discourse of the time while producing distinctive features.
Through this structure, the paper intends to confirm that Lee Ho-chul established his own strategies and secured a unique perspective that others could not see, by continuously interacting with literary discourses in South Korean society, thereby forming his unique literary world. Lee Ho-chul was able to maintain a unique authorial perspective by doubting and criticizing both the newly emerging power systems and the things that were taken for granted within the literary field and society. In this process, he persistently focused on those who could not fully become ‘nationals’ in the society of the time and those who were not granted the position of subjects within the literary field, exploring the possibilities inherent in their unstable lives.;본 연구는 1960-80년대 이호철의 소설 속에 나타난 인물 유형에 주목함으로써, 근대적 주체를 세우고자 했던 당대 문학장에 대한 이호철의 문학적 대응을 구체적으로 살펴보고자 한다.
Ewha Authors: HU, SHENGSHU
This paper focuses on the stage in the process of grammaticalization where dependent nouns begin to perform modal functions. It investigates various integrated constructions involving dependent nouns '것 (thing),' '수 (way/possibility),' and '줄 (line/way)' to explore how the corresponding predicates and components undergo categorial changes during grammaticalization. Additionally, it examines how the modal meaning expressed through the 'dependent noun + predicate' constructions is not fixed but can differentiate based on specific contexts. Therefore, it delves into the modal meanings manifested through constructions such as '-ㄹ 것이다,' '-ㄹ 수 있다/없다,' and '-ㄹ 줄 알다/모르다' in particular contexts.
Before delving into the main discussion, this paper discusses the concept of modality and its subcategories proposed here. Modality is asserted as a category indicating the degree to which a proposition or event aligns with the possible world, with subcategories including [possibility], [contingency], and [necessity]. The paper also addresses the modal meanings realized through 'dependent noun + predicate' constructions, pointing out their differences from typical modal elements. However, considering the broad perspective of a pan-linguistic viewpoint, it suggests acknowledging the modal nature realized through these constructions.
In Chapter III, various constructions involving dependent nouns '것, 수, 줄' are listed, confirming the structural closeness that indicates modal meanings. A comprehensive review is conducted, comparing them with other combinatory forms in terms of the functions of components, semantic changes, and new syntactic constraints. It is observed that the '-ㄹ 것이다' construction undergoes functional changes in its components during the process of grammaticalization, forming the most cohesive structure among the three. Conversely, the constructions '-ㄹ 수 있다/없다' and '-ㄹ 줄 알다/모르다' show no functional changes in the predicates during their grammaticalization into modal constructions. Furthermore, the paper notes differences between these two constructions, highlighting that the '있다/없다' in '-ㄹ 수 있다/없다' not only plays a semantic role but also affects syntactic structure depending on possession and existence relationships, contributing to dual interpretations of modality. In contrast, the '알다/모르다' in '-ㄹ 줄 알다/모르다' does not exhibit such characteristics.
In Chapter IV, the modal meanings realized through '-ㄹ 것이다,' '-ㄹ 수 있다/없다,' and '-ㄹ 줄 알다/모르다' constructions are examined. Particularly, the paper highlights that while the constructions '-ㄹ 수 있다/없다' and '-ㄹ 줄 알다/모르다' are perceived as having opposite meanings due to corresponding predicates, this opposition is not absolute and can be context-dependent.
In conclusion, the paper emphasizes the need to broaden the perspective on modality, considering the way modal meanings are realized through the 'dependent noun + predicate' constructions. It suggests that understanding the grammaticalization process leading to cohesive modal structures contributes to a new viewpoint and is crucial for a comprehensive analysis of Korean modality.2024-01-01T00:00:00Z손소희 소설의 공간과 젠더 수행성 연구한혜진https://dspace.ewha.ac.kr/handle/2015.oak/2675312024-02-14T02:52:11Z2024-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: 손소희 소설의 공간과 젠더 수행성 연구
Ewha Authors:
The purpose of this study is to examine the close connection between space and gender performativity and to examine the gender performativity of female characters who dismantle and reconstruct dichotomously gendered spaces in Son So-hee's novels.
Except for some of the most recent studies, research on Son So-hee's works still has the problem of being biased toward specific periods or works or remaining in a somewhat biased analysis of the female characters in the novels. Above all, there are evaluations of Son So-hee's consciousness as a writer and the female characters in her works, such as pointing out that her tendency to return to the so-called ‘traditional woman' is pointed out as a limitation, or that she shows aspects that are 'feminine' or 'unique to female writers'; Research that moves away from the dichotomous and dualistic view of space that is presented as the basis for evaluation needs to be conducted more actively. To achieve this, above all, it is necessary to raise questions about the method of polarizing and distinguishing the attributes of gender as well as space and the method of interpreting sexual difference in a dualistic manner.
Based on the above critical awareness, this study seeks to analyze the various paradoxical and subversive gender performativity displayed by female characters at various spatial scales in Son So-hee's works. Basically, the women in the novel who build their identity as feminist subjects within a patriarchal family ideology that is entrenched in dichotomous and hierarchical categorization, regardless of their success or failure, enter the world and space through a process of dynamic and system-resistant thinking and action. Create a new female space within. This is a gender performativity that is not only difficult to capture with masculine concepts, but is also far from feminine characteristics defined by men. To this end, what spatial rules are being implemented in places of various scales, from the smallest scale of the 'body' in Son So-hee's novels to public places including workplaces, and furthermore, as the places of various scales are interconnected, We sought to examine what kind of political possibilities the gender performance of female characters shows.
In this paper, we apply feminist geography's gender-space theory and Judith Butler's gender identity theory as methodologies to analyze the female space and gender performance of female characters in Son So-hee's novels. Specifically, the space in the novel is divided into the layers of body, home, and workplace to examine the agency of feminist subjects and gender identity as a performative gender.
The subject of the study was the full-length novels and short stories published during Son So-hee's life and included in Son So-hee's collection, but the specific analysis was focused on works that highlighted the gender performativity of female characters or the writer's female consciousness. Section A of each chapter examines the deterritorialization aspect in the existing territorialized space through the gender performance of female characters who violate or escape the boundaries of the existing gendered binary structure at the relevant scale. Section B of each chapter highlights how women resist within the boundaries of the scale and reterritorialize the existing territorialized space. This is a method that makes it possible to understand the fluid gender performativity of female characters in the novel when we remember that identity is a process of deterritorialization and reterritorialization simultaneously. Through this, we attempted to examine the gender performativity shown by female characters as feminist subjects by violating the order/boundaries of dichotomously gendered space and occupying both inside and outside of the space within the patriarchal social structure shown in Son So-hee's novel.
In the scale of the body, Son So-hee shapes the bodies of women in the novel to break away from traditional and dichotomous boundaries, an act that disrupts the gender rules of physical inconvenience and restrictions on spatial movement that were widespread among women at the time. In addition, pregnant subjects do not remain in the private sphere of the home, but create a new maternal space, not a home, in the middle of a masculinized public space. By approaching the issue of motherhood as a realm of choice and possibility that strengthens women's subjectivity, Son So-hee is able to discover the politics of sexual liberation through the performance of motherhood that moves between the dichotomous boundaries of private and public space.
At the domestic scale, the female characters in Son So-hee's novels are not defined by a single identity as a mother or wife at home, but sometimes seek a space outside the home and show complex roles as agents of public performance. Through this, the boundary between private and public space surrounding the household gender regime collapses, resulting in dual space occupation. In addition, in the patriarchal domestic space where power relations are the focus, female characters face their own desires and select and focus on the object of emotional attachment. In this way, they are able to occupy a subjective position in the gender regime of the home and enjoy pleasure from it. This suggests the ambivalence of women's subjectivity and domestic space that cannot be explained by the patriarchal structure alone. By repeating paradoxical obedience to the patriarch who reigns as the dominant subject, the contradictions of patriarchal ideology are exposed and broken down, while women appropriate various forms of domesticity by performing as independent and economic subjects within a family where the patriarch is absent. Multiple gender performances that go back and forth between the inside and outside of the household gender regime can be confirmed.
In the scale of the workplace, So-hee Son depicts the gendered labor space that women encounter as they leave the domestic sphere and enter the public sphere, while also showing how female subjects who object to being othered in the workplace find resistance strategies. is giving She can see that the process of female characters breaking away from outdated customs and patriarchal ideologies and transforming into independent women parallels the process of changing their work space and achieving economic subjectification as women with jobs. The women in the novel also demonstrate gender performance by destructuring the workplace space composed of double gendering and dismantling the dichotomous structure of the labor space. This is a dual labor market in which women are separated into specific areas of the labor space due to the polarization of the labor market. It is revealed as an aspect of realizing the subjectification of women's labor by challenging the gendered boundaries of and restructuring the gender order of the workplace.
Through the above considerations, we were able to confirm the political gender performance of women who deconstruct and reconstruct gendered spaces by crossing inside and outside the dichotomous boundaries of private and public spaces at each scale. These are gender performances whose aspects and various possibilities are difficult to capture from the perspective of a male-centered knowledge structure. Accordingly, this study is expected to be able to present an evaluation of artist Son So-hee and her works in a different way than before. Furthermore, through the gender performance of the female characters in Son So-hee's novels and through this, we can see what kind of aesthetic politics the author's literary practice of deconstructing the existing dual knowledge structure enables. This could be part of a meaningful process of deconstructing the dualistic structure that operates beyond women's literature and literary field.2024-01-01T00:00:00Z
