Abstract

The purpose of the study is to examine the lives and works of Ludwig van Beethoven, Maurice Ravel, and Gabriel Fauré, focusing on their violin sonatas performed in the author’s master’s degree graduation recital. The works studied include L. v. Beethoven’s Sonata for Piano and Violin No.3 in E flat Major, Op.12-3, M. Ravel’s Tzigane, and G. Fauré’s Sonata for Piano and Violin No.1 in A Major, Op.13. Through this study, the thesis aims to explore the musical characteristics and developmental processes of Classicism, Romanticism, and Impressionism, highlighting the significant impacts these composers have had on the history of music. Ludwig van Beethoven(1770-1827), a pivotal figure bridging the Classical and Romantic periods, composed his Sonata for Piano and Violin No.3 in E flat Major, Op.12-3 in 1798 while studying with Joseph Haydn in Vienna. This sonata, dedicated to Haydn, showcases L. v. Beethoven’s early style and his innovative approach to classical sonata form, emphasizing the balanced interplay between piano and violin. Maurice Ravel(1875-1937), a leading French Impressionist composer, infused his music with distinctive rhythms and harmonic structures. His Tzigane, composed in 1924, reflects the influence of Hungarian Gypsy music, inspired by the virtuosity of Hungarian violinist Jelly d'Arányi. This piece is notable for its elaborate violin techniques and rhythmic diversity, exemplifying M. Ravel’s musical versatility and creativity. Gabriel Fauré(1845-1924), a prominent French Romantic composer in the and educator, is known for expressing deep emotions and beauty in his music. His Sonata for Piano and Violin No.1 in A Major, Op.13, composed in 1876 and dedicated to violinist Paul Viardot, features lyrical melodies, intricate harmonies, and a harmonious ensemble of piano and violin. This sonata exemplifies G. Fauré’s delicate sensitivity and his significant contributions to French music. This research combines literature review and musical analysis to investigate the historical contexts and musical features of these works. The thesis provides a comprehensive understanding of each composer’s musical contributions and the lasting influence of their works on contemporary performers and audiences. Through this analysis, the study aims to offer valuable insights into the rich musical heritage of Classicism, Romanticism, and Impressionism, serving as a beneficial resource for musicians and scholars alike.;본 논문은 본인의 석사과정 졸업 연주 프로그램으로 구성된 루트비히 반 베토벤(Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770-1827)의 Sonata for Piano and Violin No.3 in E flat Major, Op.12-3, 모리스 라벨(Maurice Ravel, 1875-1937)의 Tzigane, 가브리엘 포레(Gabriel Fauré, 1845-1924)의 Sonata for Piano and Violin No.1 in A Major, Op.13을 중심으로 한 각 작곡가와 작품에 관한 연구이다. 베토벤은 고전주의와 낭만주의를 잇는 중요한 독일의 작곡가로, 그의 작품은 음악사에서 매우 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있다. 바이올린 소나타 No.3은 1798년에 작곡되었으며, 베토벤이 빈에서 요제프 하이든(Joseph Haydn)과 함께 공부하던 시기에 탄생한 작품이다. 이 소나타는 고전 소나타 형식을 기반으로 한 베토벤의 독창적인 음악적 아이디어를 반영하고 있으며, 피아노와 바이올린이 대등하게 연주되는 구조로 두 악기의 균형 잡힌 대화와 상호작용이 돋보인다. 라벨은 프랑스의 대표적인 인상주의 작곡가로, 그의 음악은 독창적인 리듬과 화성 구조로 인해 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 라벨의 Tzigane은 1924년에 작곡된 곡으로, 헝가리 집시 음악의 영향을 받은 작품이다. 라벨은 헝가리 출신 바이올리니스트 옐리 다라니(Jelly d'Arányi)의 연주를 듣고 영감을 받아 이 곡을 작곡하였으며, 느린 빠르기의 자유로운 카덴차와 다양한 테크닉을 활용한 화려한 바이올린 기교, 집시풍의 리듬과 선율을 특징으로 한다. 포레는 프랑스의 대표적인 낭만주의 작곡가이자 교육자로, 그의 음악은 감정의 깊이와 아름다움을 잘 표현하고 있다. 바이올린 소나타 No.1은 1876년에 작곡되었으며, 포레가 31세 때 작곡한 초기 걸작 중 하나로 서정적이고 섬세한 선율, 전체적으로 당김음을 효과적으로 사용하여 포레의 음악적 특성을 잘 드러내고 있다. 잦은 반음계적 진행, 6음 음계, 복합박자, 모호한 화성 등을 사용으로 낭만주의에서 인상주의로 넘어가는 시기에 중요한 역할을 하였다. 본 논문을 통해 베토벤, 라벨, 포레의 생애와 작품을 분석하여 고전주의, 낭만주의, 인상주의 시대의 음악적 특성을 조명하고, 각 작곡가가 음악사에 미친 영향을 심층적으로 탐구하였다. 이러한 분석을 통해 베토벤, 라벨, 포레의 작품이 각각의 시대적 음악적 흐름을 대표하며, 그들의 창작 활동이 현대 음악에 미친 지대한 영향을 확인할 수 있었다.
