무용창작작품 「Brain in a vat」에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 2023년 12월 7일 이화여자대학교 홀 I에서 발표한 석사 졸업 무용 작품 「Brain in a vat」의 기획, 구상, 안무, 연습과정과, 공연작품에 대한 연구이다. 「Brain in a vat」는 한국계 독일인 철학자 한병철이 신자유주의 시대에 내세운 ‘자기착취’의 개념을 주제로 성과사회에서 개인이 탁월함과 성취를 추구하면서 겪는 내적 충돌과 스트레스를 보여주는 현대무용 작품이다. 작품의 창작과정과 예술 구성요소를 분석하여 본 안무가의 안무 방식을 정리하고 연구 의미를 도출하고자 한다. 본 연구의 목적은 첫째, 작품 「Brain in a vat」의 주제와 창작과정, 공연된 작품의 예술적 구성요소를 종합적으로 분석하고자 한다. 작품이 ‘자기착취’라는 주제를 어떻게 예술형상화하는지 탐구하고자 한다. 둘째, 작품 「Brain in a vat」에 대해 연구하여 무용 예술의 순간성을 극복하고 참고하고 탐구할 수 있는 텍스트를 남기는 데에 있다. 셋째, 「Brain in a vat」를 창작할 때 본 안무자의 안무 방법을 개발하여 향후 창작 활동의 기반을 마련하는 데에 있다. 본 연구 방법은 ‘실기기반연구법(Practice Based Research, 이하 PBR)’과 문헌연구법을 사용하였다. 실기기반연구법을 기반으로 작품 「Brain in a vat」의 구상, 안무, 공연 등 전 과정을 연구하였다. 구상단계에서 작품의 주제를 잡기 위해서 한병철의 자기착취에 대한 문헌연구를 하였다. 작품의 주제를 잡을 때 문헌연구를 해서 주제를 명료히 하고 심화할 수 있었다. 구성 및 연습단계에서는 안무일지, 연습 영상, 공연영상 등 1차 자료를 구축하여서 그것을 기반으로 연구하였다. 작품 「Brain in a vat」는 제1장 ‘물속에 있는 굴레’, 제2장 ‘돌파에 대한 시도’, 제3장 ‘물속에 다시 돌아가기’로 구성된다. 어항 속 물고기는 물 밖으로 빠져나가려고 안간힘을 쓰지만 결국 물속으로 돌아가는 과정을 보여준다. 이 과정은 인간 사회의 ‘자기착취’ 과정을 연상케 한다. 물고기의 행동을 통해 인간이 어떻게 자기착취로 나아가는지 암시한다. 성과사회에 지친 사람들이 공적 성취를 좇아 자신을 미화하는 현상을 표현하고자 하였다. 본 안무자는 안무 과정에서 물고기의 이미지, 음악의 특성, 감정을 자연스럽게 드러내는 즉흥성을 활용해 안무를 완성하였다. 동작 외에 음악과 오브제 등 다양한 요소들도 다 중요하다. 음악은 선율의 특징이 없는 전자합성음악이 주류를 이루며 포스트모던 스타일이 강하다. 오브제는 15m 길이의 긴 줄과 불규칙한 모양의 유리판을 사용하였다. 그중에 긴 줄은 물을 상징하며 인간의 생존과 관련된 사회 환경을 가리킨다. 유리판은 어항을 상징하며 성과사회에서 인간이 창출한 모든 성과를 가리킨다. 몸의 동작과 오브제를 활용하여 인간과 사회, 인간과 성과, 인간과 자아와의 복잡한 관계를 보여주고자 하였다. 본 논문은 연구자로서 자신이 창작한 무용 작품을 분석한 것으로 작품의 주제와 창작과정을 되돌아보고 탐구한 것이다. 즉 창작과정을 상세히 기록·분석함으로써 무용 예술의 순간성을 극복하고 작품 텍스트를 남기는 의미가 있다. 또한 자신의 안무 방식과 스타일을 정리하여 앞으로의 창작에 자료가 될 수 있을 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 다른 안무자들에게도 그들이 자신의 작품을 연구할 때 하나의 참고가 될 것이다. 동시에 안무가로서 자신의 안무 습관과 스타일을 성찰하는 데 도움이 되며, 앞으로 자신의 무용철학을 발전시키고 창작에서 실천할 수 있도록 영감과 도움을 준다. 본 연구는 외국인이 한국에서 창작한 작품의 분석으로서 한국과 세계 무용창작과 연구의 교류를 촉진하는 작은 디딤돌이 될 수 있다.;This thesis is a study on the planning, conception, choreography, practice process, and performance of the master's graduation dance work 「Brain in a vat」, presented at Hall I of Ewha Womans University on December 7, 2023. 「Brain in a vat」 is a modern dance work that shows the internal conflict and stress that individuals experience while pursuing excellence and achievement in a performance society, based on the concept of ‘self-exploitation’ put forward by Korean-German philosopher Byung-cheol Han in the neo-liberal era. By analyzing the creative process and artistic components of the work, aiming to organize the choreography method of this choreographer and derive research implications. The purpose of this study is, first, to comprehensively analyze the theme and creative process of the work 「Brain in a vat」, and the artistic components of the performed work. I would like to explore how the work embodies the theme of ‘self-exploitation’. Second, by studying the work 「Brain in a vat」, the goal is to overcome the momentary nature of dance art and leave a text that can be referenced and explored. Third, when creating 「Brain in a vat」, the goal is to develop the choreographer's choreography method and lay the foundation for future creative activities. This research method used ‘Practice Based Research (PBR)’ and literature research methods. Based on practice-based research methods, the entire process, including conception, choreography, and performance, of the work “Brain in a vat” was studied. In order to determine the theme of the work in the planning stage, a literature study on Byung-cheol Han's self-exploitation was conducted. When deciding on a topic for a work, I was able to clarify and deepen the topic through literature research. In the composition and practice stage, primary data such as choreography logs, practice videos, and performance videos were constructed and research was conducted based on them.The work “Brain in a vat” consists of Chapter 1 ‘Bridles in the water’, Chapter 2 ‘Attempt to break through’, and Chapter 3 ‘Returning to the water’. It shows the process of fish in a fish tank trying hard to get out of the water, but eventually returning to the water. This process is reminiscent of the ‘self-exploitation’ process in human society. The fish's behavior suggests how humans move toward self-exploitation. I wanted to express the phenomenon of people who are tired of the performance society and glorify themselves in pursuit of merits and achievements. This choreographer completed the choreography by utilizing the image of the fish, the characteristics of the music, and improvisation that naturally reveals emotions during the choreography process. In addition to movement, various other elements such as music and objects are also important. The music is mainly electro-synthetic music without melodic features and has a strong postmodern style. The object used a 15m long string and an irregularly shaped glass plate. Among them, the long line symbolizes water and refers to the social environment related to human survival. The glass plate symbolizes a fishbowl and refers to all merits and achievements created by humans in a performance society. By using body movements and objects, we tried to show the complex relationships between humans and society, humans and performance, and humans and ego. This thesis is an analysis of a dance work created by oneself as a researcher, looking back and exploring the theme and creative process of the work. In other words, it has the meaning of overcoming the instantaneity of dance art and leaving a text of the work by recording and analyzing the creative process in detail. Additionally, by organizing your own choreography method and style, you will be able to use it as a resource for future creations. In addition, it will serve as a reference for other choreographers when studying their own works. At the same time, it helps you reflect on your own choreographic habits and style as a choreographer, and provides inspiration and help to develop your own dance philosophy and practice it in your creations in the future. This study is an analysis of works created in Korea by foreigners and can serve as a small stepping stone to promote exchanges between Korean and international dance creation and research.
