Social Work Professional Development through Social Work Curriculum Analysis in Cambodia

Abstract

In Cambodia, social workers possess a wide range of educational backgrounds and gain their social work-related knowledge through training throughout their career. The government is seeking support from international institutions to provide training for the existing social workers in the country. Therefore, a noticeable absence of definitive guidance or established hierarchies exists in defining learning objectives or competencies within formal social work education. The objectives of this study were to (1) examine the utilization of social work competencies within the field of social work and education in Cambodia, (2) to analyze the focus on competencies index in the curriculum of the degree program of social work, (3) to determine its significance of values and ethics, knowledge, and skills for social workers within the curriculum, (4) to explore any potential correlation between the emphasis placed on competencies and curriculum with the level of satisfaction. The study utilized a mixed research methodology, encompassing quantitative data collection through surveys distributed to alumni in the field of social work, as well as qualitative data collection through face-to-face interviews with key informants such as graduates, educators, and social work supervisors. A total of 73 respondents participated in the quantitative survey questionnaire and a total 15 key informants tokes part in the semi-structure interviews. The result from the quantitative survey highlights the level of applicability of the competencies index in the social work practice field, its emphasis in the curriculum, the level of emphasis of the curriculum on social work related value and ethic, knowledge and skills, and the analysis of the curriculum satisfaction. Moreover, the qualitative interview data prevailed five major themes that provide more in deep information on the necessity of competencies in the field of social work practice in Cambodia. The research revealed that the social work sector in Cambodia places significant importance on the development of social work competencies. The curriculum highlighted the significance of values, ethical professional conduct, and proficiency in social work practice, in line with the 2015 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards. In addition, the quantitative study provided a clear demonstration of the crucial role of values and ethics, competencies, knowledge, and skills in the social work curriculum in Cambodia. This study built upon previous research by examining the significance of competencies in the field of social work and their impact on satisfaction with the curriculum. The findings of this study revealed that the competencies and emphases significantly influence the overall satisfaction with the curriculum. This reinforced the necessity for a practical, realistic, and adaptable approach to education within the realm of social work. It is strongly advised to enhance the curriculum and provide students with the essential preparation prior to commencing their social work practice. It is crucial for social work students to possess the requisite skills and knowledge to effectively navigate the complexities of their chosen field and smoothly transition into their area of specialization. The effectiveness of service delivery in Cambodia is closely tied to the significance of case management. To ensure the optimal training and skill development of social work students and practitioners, it is imperative to actively engage the local community and seek the expertise of professionals in the field. An essential aspect of training and learning involves integrating traditional practices and beliefs into social work practices. This method helps customize the skills of educators in the local area. Practitioners in the local area may undergo specialized training that focuses on fostering specific values to be incorporated into their social work practices. There are numerous opportunities that provide valuable exposure and training in social work practices, each with their own corresponding outcomes. The research on the curriculum of social work education in Cambodia provides valuable insights for its improvement, considering the rapid changes in the country's social and political landscape. Further research should give priority to conducting longitudinal studies that examine the effects of the curriculum on the professional trajectories and service provision of its graduates. It is crucial to incorporate soft skills, including communication, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence, into the curriculum. Moreover, it is essential to thoroughly examine the effectiveness of cultural competence and sensitivity training. Furthermore, it is of crucial significance to direct the research towards guaranteeing the alignment of national social policy with the curriculum.;캄보디아에서 사회복지사들은 광범위한 교육 배경을 가지며 전문 교육을 통해 사회복지 관련 지식을 습득하고 있다. 정부는 국제기관의 지원을 받아 국내 사회복지사들을 위한 교육을 강화하고 있다. 따라서 공식적인 사회복지 교육에서 학습 목표나 역량을 명확히 정의하는 데 있어 결정적인 지침이나 확립된 위계가 눈에 띄게 부족한 상황이다. 본 연구의 목적은 다음과 같다: (1) 캄보디아 사회복지 및 교육분야에서 사회복지 역량의 활용을 조사하고, (2) 사회복지 학위 프로그램 교육과정에서 역량 지표에 초점을 두고 분석하고, (3) 교육과정 내 사회복지사들의 가치 및 윤리, 지식 및 기술의 중요성을 결정하려는 것이며, (4) 역량과 교육과정에 중점을 둔 만족도 수준 사이의 잠재적 상관 관계를 탐구하려는 것이다. 본 연구는 졸업생, 교육자, 사회복지사 등 주요정보제공자와의 대변 인터뷰를 통한 질적 자료수집뿐만 아니라 사회복지학 분야의 졸업생들에게 베포된 설문지를 통해 양적 지료수집을 진행한 혼합 연구방법론을 활용하였다. 양적 조사 설문지에는 총 73명의 응답자가 참여하였고, 반구조화 면담에는 총 15명의 주요 정보 제공자가 참여하였다. 양적 조사 결과는 사회복지 실천 영역의 역량 지표 적용 가능성 수준, 교육과정에서의 역량 강조, 사회복지 관련 가치와 윤리, 지식과 기술에 대한 교육과정의 강조 수준, 교육과정 만족도 분석 등을 강조하고 있다. 또한 질적 면담 자료는 캄보디아 사회복지 실천 영역의 역량 필요성에 대한 심층적인 정보를 더 많이 제공하는 5대 주제를 압도하였다. 연구 결과, 캄보디아 사회복지 분야는 사회복지 역량 개발에 중요성을 두고 있음이 밝혀졌다. 교육과정은 2015년 교육 정책 및 인증 기준에 따라 가치, 윤리적 전문직 행동, 사회복지 실천 숙련도의 중요성을 강조하였다. 또한, 양적 연구를 통해 캄보디아 사회복지 교육 과정에서 가치와 윤리, 역량, 지식 및 기술의 중요 역할을 명확히 보여 주었다. 이는 이론적 연구, 실제 현장 실습 및 인턴쉽을 통한 실용적 교육과 결합하여 이루어졌다. 본 연구는 사회복지 분야에서 역량의 중요성과 교육 과정에 미치는 만족도에 대한 영향을 조사함으로써 선행연구를 바탕으로 진행되었다. 본 연구의 결과는 역량과 강조점이 교육과정에 대한 전반적인 만족도에 유의미한 영향을 미차는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 사회복지 분야에서 실용적이고 현실적이며 적응 가능한 접근 방식이 필요함을 강조하였다. 사회복지 실습을 시작하기 전에 학생들에게 필수적인 준비과정을 제공하고 교육 과정을 강화하는 것이 강력히 권장된다. 사회복지 학생들이 선택한 자신의 분야의 복잡성을 효과적으로 해결하고 전문화 영역으로 원활하게 전환할 수 있도록 필수적인 기술과 지식을 갖추는 것이 중요하다. 캄보디아에서의 서비스 제공 효과는 사례 관리의 중요성과 밀접 관련이 있다. 사회복지 학생들과 실무자들의 최적의 훈련과 기술 개발을 보장하기 위해서는 지역사회와 적극적으로 협력하고 해당 분야 전문가들의 전문지식을 활용하는 것이 필수적이다. 교육과 학습의 중요한 측면은 사회복지 실천에 전통적인 실천과 신념을 통합하는 것이다. 본 방법은 지역 교육자들의 기술을 맞춤화하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있다. 지역 실무자들은 사회복지 실천에 특정 가치를 심어주는 것에 중점을 둔 전문 교육을 받을 수 있고, 사회복지 실천의 다양한 기회들은 각각 독립적인 결과들과 함께 사회복지 실습에 있어 귀중한 노출과 훈련을 제공하게 된다. 캄보디아 사회복지 교육과정에 대한 연구는 국가의 사회적, 정치적 풍토의 급격한 변화를 고려하여 그 개선을 위한 중요한 통찰을 제공한다. 향후 연구는 교육과정이 졸업생들의 직업적 궤적과 서비스 제공에 미치는 영향을 조사하는 장기 연구를 우선적으로 다뤄야 한다. 커뮤니케이션, 비판적 사고 및 감정지능과 같은 소프트스킬을 교육 과정에 포함시키는 것이 중요하다. 또한, 문화적 역량과 감수성 훈련의 효과를 면밀히 검토할 필요가 있고, 나아가 국가 사회정책과 교육과정의 일치성을 보장하는 방향으로 연구를 집중적으로 진행하는 것이 필요하다.
