Abstract

AI's journey, from its early theoretical underpinnings to a driving force in modern technology, illustrates a radical shift in our interaction with machines. Reddit, with its diverse user base, serves as the primary platform for this analysis, providing a rich dataset to understand public attitudes towards AI. The thesis explores the prevalent use cases and specific benefits of AI as highlighted in Reddit discussions, aiming to understand how AI is integrated into various aspects of life and the tangible benefits it offers. The study conducts a comprehensive literature review on public perception of AI, particularly focusing on social media platforms like Reddit. It then outlines the methodology adopted for this research, which includes data collection, preprocessing, thematic and sentiment analysis, and ethical considerations. The research utilizes advanced computational techniques like BERTopic for thematic analysis and NLTK for sentiment analysis, enabling a nuanced exploration of AI's public perception. The thematic analysis identifies 78 distinct topics, of which 32 are directly related to AI use cases. These range from AI in art and society to specialized applications like medical urgency and therapy. The study also categorizes 14 topics under concerns and questions about AI from users, shedding light on ethical considerations, practical challenges, and questions about AI's capabilities. Key observations from the BERTopic analysis highlight AI's multifaceted impact across various domains, including education, healthcare, legal sector, and content creation, underscoring its capability to revolutionize a wide range of sectors. Additionally, the analysis reveals mixed public perceptions in domains like AI in art and education, where debates center around the authenticity and originality of AI-generated art and the role of AI tools in education. Conversely, domains like digital documents and image generation exhibit more positive sentiments towards AI's efficiency and productivity. In conclusion, this thesis provides significant contributions to the academic understanding of AI's role in everyday life.
