Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between self concept clarity and disordered eating behaviors, and whether perfectionistic self presentation, self-appearance integration and thin-ideal internalization sequentially mediate the relationship. For this purpose, 326 data samples were collected from women aged 20 to 39 currently living in Korea. Despcriptive statistics and correlation analysis were conducted through utilizing SPSS 21.0, and the structural model and significance of the mediation effect were verified through MPLUS 8.3. The result of this study are as follows. First self-concept clarity has a negative effect on perfectionistic self presentation. This means that clarity and certainty people have about their self-perceptions has an effect on self perfectionistic presentation. Next, we verified that self perfectionistic presentation positively affects self-appearance integration, thin-idealized internalization and disordered eating behaviors. This suggests that individuals who establish desired images that serve interpersonal needs can incorporate their appearance into their sense of self, internalize the specific ideals that value thin over other body as definitive of societal definitions of attractiveness, and show disordered eating behaviors. Futhermore, self-appearance integration positively affects thin-idealized internalization, and thin-idealized internalization positively affects disordered eating behaviors. The mediation effect test results showed that self perfectionistic presentation and thin-idealized internalization sequentially mediated the relationship between self-concept clarity and disordered eating behaviors, and perfectionistic self presentation, self-appearance integration, and thin-idealized internalization sequentially mediated the relationship between self-concept clarity and disordered eating behaviors. Based on the findings, we identified the sequential mediating effects of self perfectionistic presentation and thin-idealized internalization, and the sequential mediating effects of self perfectionistic presentation, self-appearance integration, and thin-idealized internalization on the relationship between self-concept clarity and disordered eating behaviors. The findings suggest that women in their 20s who avoid disclosing imperfections due to uncertainty of self concept may show disordered eating behaviors, and that integrating appearance into one's self to control anxiety due to inhibiting imperfections, coupled with thin-idealized internalization contributes to disordered eating behaviors. The results of this study suggest that self perfectionistic presentation stemming from low self-concept clarity is a factor influencing disordered eating behaviors among korean women who are in their 20s, and that therapeutic interventions are needed to address the perfectionistic self presention tendency stemming from an unstable concept of self, especially that shows disordered eating behavior.
