상반(相反)을 통한 상생(相生)

Abstract

This study began with a thought that aims to realize that the universe's origin is inherent in all things, apply those laws to one's inner world, and achieve healthy growth. It is based on the suggestion that all phenomena in the universe move according to a common principle, and the key to this movement is that opposing and contradictory processes are intersecting and repeated. Contradictory processes, such as birth and death, growth and degeneration occur alternately in an interdependent relationship, and further movement level can be achieved only by enduring these contradictory experiences. This study aims to examine how to perform tasks to achieve proper growth based on understanding these common principles in the world. The concept of “Tao (道)” advocated by Laozi is accepted as the fundamental law of the universe, and it helped this study explore the inner world. The core principle of Tao is that there are always opposing processes of creation and extinction that continue and cycle to create new meaning. It takes constant effort and patience to create this repetition, and it is prone to be exhausting because it is hard to achieve the results quickly. Also, according to the principles of Tao, the accumulated time may seem futile when the results of hard work accumulate and reach the end because everything is lost at that moment. However, after the entire process of life and death has passed, they are mixed and create a new meaning. In this sense, this study identified that circularity through contradictory confrontation is paramount for true growth, and an attitude of training is essential. This study also assumed that Tao, which is the understanding and attitude toward the world's laws, can be applied to artistic work. It is suggested that reflecting on oneself and then cultivating based on the reflection is an important aspect of beingan artist. Therefore, this study examined Kim Tae-ho and Karen Margolis, two artists who face their working process based on these values. Although the two artists have different forms of expression, they both have sought their pathways through a long period of reflection and diligent work. This study contributed to learning their attitude of discipline as they persevere through repeated opposing processes and continue to create advanced shapes. This study also aims to understand Tao through natural objects that visually reveal the common laws of all things. In particular, it focused on the enlightening forms of nature. Layers of clay of various colors were steadily piled up to visually reveal the process of creation that lasted a long time, such as the growth process of many natural objects. Soon after that, the extinction begins, creating a reversal result. A series of small carving marks formed the pattern created during this process, and these traces symbolize the infinite changes created by layers of accumulated soil. The unification of the small carving marks suggests that new shapes will continue to be created. An interesting possibility was discovered in this study during the new project:the shape of unity that changed every time depending on the starting base could appear even if it went through the same opposite process. These observations confirm that the study's progress is not a simple repetition of work, and it will advance to a new level, become a basis for discipline, and achievecontinuous change and growth as an important stepping stone for the future. Every process and stage of life is deeply connected to create new meaning. The enlightenment realized through this study contributes to understanding the basic principles of life more clearly and establishing attitudes based on them. Modern society is rapidly changing and becoming complex. However, time and dedication are still required to achieve certain goals, and a corresponding attitude is essential. A viewpoint that considers and focuses on the context of the other half is required to avoid understanding every phenomenon and existence in a fragmentary way. This study will contribute to learning these philosophies and attitudes and achieving progressive and meaningful growth.;본 연구는 우주의 근원이 만물에 내재되어 있음을 깨닫고, 그 법칙을 스스로의 내면에 적용하여 건강한 성장을 이루어내고자 하는 고민으로부터 시작되었다. 우주의 모든 현상은 공통된 원리에 따라 움직이며, 이 움직임의 핵심은 서로 대립하는 상반(相反)된 과정이 교차하고 반복된다는 것이다. 탄생과 죽음, 성장과 퇴화와 같은 상반된 과정은 상호 의존적 관계로 번갈아 나타나며, 이러한 모순된 경험을 견뎌내야만 다음으로 발전해 나아갈 수 있다. 연구자는 이러한 세상의 공통된 원리에 대한 이해를 토대로 어떻게 작업을 수행해야 올바른 성장을 이뤄낼 수 있는지를 고찰하고자 하였다. 우주의 근본 법칙으로서 노자가 주장한 ‘도(道)’의 개념은 연구자의 내면에 대한 탐구에 도움을 주었다. 도의 핵심 원리는 생성과 소멸이라는 상반된 과정이 이어지고 순환하여 새로운 의미를 창출한다는 것이다. 이 반복을 만들기 위해서 꾸준한 노력과 인내가 필요하며, 빠르게 완성된 결과물을 얻기 힘들기 때문에 쉽게 지칠 수 있다. 또한 도의 원리에 따르면 노력의 성과가 쌓여 그것이 극에 다다랐을 때 모든 것이 소멸되기에 축적된 시간이 허무하게 느껴질 수도 있다. 그러나 생멸의 과정이 모두 지나면 그것들은 서로 어우러지며 새로운 의미를 만들어낸다. 이런 점에서 연구자는 모순된 대립의 과정을 통한 순환성이 진정한 성장에 매우 중요하고 이를 위해 수련의 자세가 반드시 필요하다는 것을 깨달을 수 있었다. 연구자는 도라는 세상의 법칙성에 대한 이해와 태도가 예술 작업에도 동일하게 적용될 수 있다고 여겼다. 스스로를 돌아보고 성찰한 후 그것을 바탕으로 수양하는 것은 예술가에게 중요한 부분이라고 생각했다. 따라서 이러한 가치관을 기반으로 작업 과정을 마주하는 예술가인 김태호와 카렌 마골리스에 대해 살펴보았다. 두 작가의 표현 방식은 다르지만 그들은 오랜 시간을 거쳐 성찰의 시간을 가지고 수행적인 작업에 임하며 자신만의 길을 찾아나갔다. 이를 통해 연구자는 수없이 반복되는 반대의 과정을 인내하며 계속해서 발전된 형상을 만들어 나가는 그들의 수양의 자세에 대해 배울 수 있었다. 연구자는 만물의 공통된 법칙이 시각적으로 명확하게 드러나는 자연물을 통해 도를 이해하고자 하였다. 그 중에서도 특히 깨달음을 주는 자연의 형상을 중점적으로 살펴보았다. 많은 자연물의 생장의 과정과 같이 긴 시간 지속되는 생성의 과정을 시각적으로 드러내기 위해 다양한 색의 화장토 겹을 꾸준히 쌓아 올렸다. 이어서 곧 소멸의 과정이 시작되고, 이로 인해 반전의 결과가 만들어진다. 이 과정에서 생긴 무늬는 작은 조각 자국들이 이어져 형성되었는데, 이 흔적들은 축적된 흙의 겹으로 형성된 무한한 변화를 상징한다. 작은 조각 자국들이 합일되는 모습은 새로운 형상이 지속적으로 만들어질 것임을 암시한다. 연구자는 새로운 작업을 진행하면서 동일한 상반의 과정을 거치더라도 시작하는 기반에 따라 매번 변화된 합일의 형상이 나타날 수 있다는 흥미로운 가능성을 발견하였다. 이러한 관찰을 통해 연구의 진행 과정이 단순히 작업을 반복하는 것이 아니라, 새로운 차원으로 나아가며 수양의 근거가 되고, 미래를 위한 중요한 발판으로서 지속적인 변화와 성장을 이루게 할 것이라는 확신을 얻었다. 생명의 모든 과정과 각 단계는 서로 깊게 연결되어 의미를 형성한다. 이 연구를 통해 얻은 깨달음은 삶의 기본 원칙을 더 명확히 이해하고, 그에 따른 태도를 정립하는 데 도움을 주었다. 현대 사회는 빠르게 변하고 복잡해지고 있지만, 어떤 목표를 이루기 위해서는 시간과 헌신이 필요하며, 그에 상응하는 자세가 필수적이라고 생각한다. 모든 현상과 존재를 단편적으로 이해하지 않기 위해 항상 반면(半面)의 맥락을 고려하며 조명하는 시각을 가져야 한다. 연구자는 본 연구를 통해 이러한 철학과 태도를 체득하고, 발전적이며 의미 있는 성장을 이루어 나가고자 한다.
