Abstract

미국의 대표적인 작곡가이자 이론가인 조지 펄(George Perle, 1915-2009)은 쇤베르크의 12음 기법에 대한 새로운 해석을 통해 자신만의 이론인 ‘12음 조성(Twelve-Tone Tonality)’을 창안하였으며 행렬음악으로의 발전을 이루었다. 즉, 현대 음악의 기초가 된 12음 기법과는 차별화된 자신만의 음악 언어를 사용해 새로운 작곡 기법의 가능성을 제시하고 있다. 그는 음렬음악에 조성음악과 같은 구조적인 체계를 세우고자 다양한 개념을 새롭게 정의함으로써 음악 어법의 영역을 확장하였다. 이러한 그의 독창적인 ‘12음 조성’은 기존과는 다른 시각으로 음렬음악을 바라보게 했을 뿐만 아니라 현대음악의 새로운 가능성을 제시하였다. 본 논문은 펄의 음악을 어떻게 분석할 수 있는지 살펴보는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 이를 위해, 먼저 그의 작곡 기법을 담은 이론서 『12음 조성』(Twelve-Tone Tonality, 1977, 1996)에 제시된 이론체계를 살펴본 후, 그의 ‘12음 조성’이 실제 음악에서 어떻게 구체화되고 있는지 알아보았다. 또한, 펄의 이론에서 가장 기초가 되는 행렬을 찾는 방식을 비롯해, 행렬이 실제 음악에 어떻게 전개되고 있는지 살펴봄으로써 ‘12음 조성’과 실제 음악 간의 연관관계에 대해 면밀히 살펴보았다.;George Perle (1915-2009), a distinguished American composer and theorist, pioneered his own theory, 'Twelve-Tone Tonality,' through a fresh interpretation of Arnold Schoenberg's twelve-tone technique, contributing to the evolution of array music. Distinct from the foundational twelve-tone technique that became the basis of contemporary music, Perle employed his unique musical language, presenting new possibilities in compositional techniques. He expanded the realm of musical language by establishing structural systems within serial music, akin to tonal composition, through the redefinition of various concepts. His innovative 'Twelve-Tone Tonality' not only provided a different perspective on twelve-tone music but also proposed new potentials within contemporary music. This paper aims to explore how Perle's music can be analyzed. To achieve this, we first examined the theoretical framework encapsulated in his treatise 'Twelve-Tone Tonality' (1977, 1996), delving into his compositional techniques. Additionally, we thoroughly explored the foundational arrays in Perle's theory and examined how these arrays unfold in real music. By doing so, we aimed to gain a nuanced understanding of the relationship between 'Twelve-Tone Tonality' and actual musical compositions.
