북한 ‘혁명의 천리길’ 담론의 상징화·의례화 연구

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 우선 북한의 ‘혁명의 천리길’ 담론의 상징화와 ‘혁명의 천리길’ 답사행군의 의례화가 정치권력의 우상화에 어떤 효과가 있는지 밝혀내고자 한다. 다음으로 북한당국은 어떤 이유로 ‘혁명의 천리길’ 답사행군을 계속 이어가려 하는지 고찰하는 것이다. 그리고 ‘혁명의 천리길’ 수식어가 담고 있는 가장 중요한 상징적 의미가 무엇인지 규명하고자 한다. 이 연구를 위해 본 논문은 「노동신문」과 「민주조선」의 관련 사설을 분석대상 자료로 삼았다. 연구범위는 1970년부터 2022년까지로 정하였다. 본 논문은 ‘혁명의 천리길’ 관련 기사의 양적분석을 통하여 시대별 흐름을 추적하여 미세한 변화를 발견할 수 있었다. ‘혁명의 천리길’ 관련 기사의 빈도는 높지 않았으나 세습체제가 이어지면서 연평균 빈도가 증가세를 보였고 지면 분석 등에서도 비슷한 현상이 나타났다. 또한 내용분석을 위한 세부 유형의 빈도에서 “‘백두혈통’에 대한 충성심”, “사회주의 체제 우월성”, “‘혁명의 천리길’ 상징적 의미” 유형이 가장 높은 빈도율을 보였다. 이러한 분석 결과는 북한당국이 ‘혁명의 천리길’ 담론을 통해서 무엇을 얻고자 하는지 유추할 수 있었다. 본 논문은 12세의 모범 청소년을 대상으로 하는 답사행군을 어떤 형식으로 진행하였으며 그 궁극적인 목표가 무엇이었는지 파악하였다. 이를 위해 ‘혁명의 천리길’ 담론의 상징화·의례화 분석을 진행하였다. 이론적 논의에 비추어보면 상징과 의례는 강제적인 방법이 아니라 설득의 방식을 취하면서 정치권력을 강화해주는 기능이 있었다. 사회주의 체제에서 상징과 의례 역시 정치권력을 공고히 하고 그들을 숭배하는 역할을 수행하였다. ‘혁명의 천리길’ 상징에는 구호와 노래, 혁명사적지, 참가증, 반제·반계급주의 정신, 혁명적 가정, 애국 등이 있으며 이러한 요소들은 김일성과 그 가문을 숭배하고 그들의 업적을 북한주민에게 어필하는데 동원되었다. 북한당국은 ‘혁명의 천리길’ 상징화·의례화를 구현하여 사회주의 체제를 유지하고 ‘백두혈통’ 의 세습을 이어가고자 하였다. 정치 의례는 정치권력에 충성하도록 조장하며 집단의 일체화를 이를 수 있었다. 상징으로 둘러싸인 ‘혁명의 천리길’ 답사행군대 의례는 ‘백두혈통’ 에 대한 존경심과 충성심으로 귀결되는 것이다. 본 논문에서‘혁명의 천리길’담론의 시대별 변화에 주목하여 미세한 변화를 발견하였다. 상징의 면면을 살펴보면 김정일 시대가 들어서면서 “‘혁명의 천리길’ 은 종착점을 모른다, 단순히 지리학적으로 계산되는 길이 아니다” 등으로 표현한 문장이 등장한다. 이는 세습체제의 정당성을 명확히 제시한 것으로 해석할 수 있으며 김정은 시대로 이어졌다. 또한 김정은 시대 “김정일애국주의” 가 관련 기사에 실렸으나 본 내용 자체가 달라진 것은 아니다. 이는 북한당국이 주민에게 김정일의 애국심을 따라 배우도록 독려하고 그의 치적을 내세우려는 의도와 부합한다. 북한당국이 지난 50여 년 동안 고수해온 ‘혁명의 천리길’ 답사행군대 의례에서 세습체제로 인한 불가피한 변화는 보였으나 큰 흐름에서 변화는 찾을 수 없었다. 이러한 답사행군 의례는 ‘백두혈통’ 에 대한 북한주민의 긍정적 지지를 얻는데 가장 효과적인 방식이었다고 추정할 수 있다. 북한당국이 왜 ‘혁명의 천리길’ 을 이어가려 하며 이 수식어가 전하는 상징적 의미는 무엇인가에 대한 해답은 본 논문의 결론에서 다루었다. 본 연구의 결론적 성격으로서 “‘백두혈통’에 대한 충성심”, “사회주의 체제 우월성”, “‘혁명의 천리길’상징적 의미” 를 분석하였다. 분석 결과 북한당국의 핵심 논지는 이른바 백두혈통에게 충성을 바치며 고난에 찬 ‘혁명의 천리길 ’을 영원히 이어가야 한다는 것이다. 그러기 위해서는 북한 사회주의 체제의 우월성을 강조할 수밖에 없는 것이다. ‘혁명의 천리길’ 담론은 정치권력의 정당성을 강화하여 영원한 세습을 이어가고자 하는 북한당국의 의도를 담아낸 것이다.;This study aims firstly to identify how the symbolization of North Korea’s ‘Thousand Miles of Revolution’discourse and the ritualization of the ‘Thousand Miles of Revolution’exploration marching serve to idolize political power. Then, the study considers why the North Korean authorities continue to organize the‘Thousand Miles of Revolution’exploration marching. Finally, it attempts to identify the main symbolic meanings of the‘Thousand Miles of Revolution’phrase. This study analyzes the relevant editorials of the Rodong Sinmun and the Minzhu Chosen. The period under study is from 1970 to 2022. Through the quantitative analysis of articles related to the‘Thousand Miles of Revolution’, this paper was able to trace the flow of time and discover subtle changes. The frequency of articles related to the‘Thousand Miles of Revolution’was not high, but the average annual frequency increased as the hereditary system continued, and a similar phenomenon occurred in the article analysis. In addition, the frequency of subtypes for content analysis showed that "loyalty to‘Baekduhyultong' (which means the Baekdu family line),” “superiority of the socialist system,”and“symbolic meaning of‘The Thousand Miles of Revolution’” had the highest frequency rates. From these findings it is possible to infer what the North Korean authorities hope to achieve through the‘Thousand Miles of Revolution’discourse. This paper seeks to understand the format and ultimate goals of a exploration marching for 12-year-old exemplary youth. For this purpose, a symbolization-ritualization analysis of the discourse of the‘Thousand Miles of Revolution’was conducted. In light of the theoretical discussion, symbols and rituals had the function of reinforcing political power by taking the form of persuasion rather than coercion. In the socialist system, symbols and rituals also played a role in consolidating and worshipping political power. The symbols of the‘Thousand Miles of Revolution’include slogans and songs, revolutionary historical sites, certificates of participation, anti-establishment and anti-class spirit, revolutionary families and patriotism, and these elements were used to venerate Kim Il-sung and his family and appeal to the North Korean people for their achievements. The North Korean authorities implemented the symbolization and ritualization of the‘Thousand Miles of Revolution’to maintain the socialist system and continue the Baekduhyultong succession. Political rituals promoted loyalty to political power and helped unify the group. The marching ritual of the‘Thousand Miles of Revolution’, surrounded by symbols, was a ritual of respect and loyalty to the Baekduhyultong. This paper pays attention to the changes in the discourse of the‘Thousand Miles of Revolution’over time and finds subtle shifts. In terms of symbolism, sentences such as“‘The Thousand Miles of Revolution’does not know its end point, it is not simply a geographically calculated road”appear in the Kim Jong-il era. This can be interpreted as a clear presentation of the legitimacy of the hereditary system, which has continued into the Kim Jong-un era. In addition, “Kim Jong-il patriotism”has appeared in related articles during the Kim Jong-un era, but the content itself has not changed. This is in line with the intention of the North Korean authorities to encourage the people to emulate the patriotism of Kim Jong Il and glorify his achievements. The rituals of the‘Thousand Miles of Revolution’march that the North Korean authorities have adhered for the past 50 years show the inevitable changes in the hereditary system, but they do not show any major changes. It is believed that these rituals have been the most effective way of winning the positive support of the North Korean people for the‘Baekduhyultong.’ The answer to the question of why the North Korean authorities want to continue the‘Thousand Miles of Revolution’and what is the symbolic meaning of the phrase is given in the conclusion of this paper. As a conclusion of this study, we have analyzed loyalty to‘Baekduhyultong’,“superiority of the socialist system”and“symbolic meaning of‘Thousand Miles of Revolution’”. The analysis shows that the central thesis of the North Korean authorities is that the so-called“Baekduhyultong”must be the subject of loyalty and the arduous‘Thousand Miles of Revolution’must continue forever. The discourse of the‘Thousand Miles of Revolution’reflects the intention of the North Korean authorities to strengthen the legitimacy of political power and ensure its eternal succession by emphasizing the superiority of the North Korean socialist system.
