Digital Narratives of Power

Abstract

This thesis explores the evolving role of social media in shaping political landscapes, with a specific focus on the case of El Salvador and President Nayib Bukele. Social media, particularly Twitter, has become a crucial tool for political actors to disseminate information, engage with audiences and mobilize support. Bukele’s adept use of social media during his rise to power is explored, highlighting how it allowed him to legitimize his power and contribute to El Salvador’s democratic decline. The study aims to scrutinize Bukele’s social media strategies and their impact on democratic setbacks, focusing on three key events during his presidency: the dismissal of government officials, the military invasion of the Salvadoran Parliament, and the handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. Employing a qualitative research design, this thesis conducts a thematic and discourse analyses of Bukele’s tweets, revealing recurring themes and media tactics employed to legitimize his power. As the thesis unfolds, it examines the broader implications of social media use by autocratic leaders, emphasizing its influence on citizen engagement, political discourse, and voter mobilization. By focusing on El Salvador as a compelling case study, the thesis aims to deepen our understanding of the intricate relationship between technology, politics, and democracy in the digital age.;본 논문은 엘살바도르의 나이브 부켈레(Nayib Bukele) 대통령의 사례를 중심으로 정치적 지형을 형성하는 데 있어 소셜 미디어의 역할을 탐구한다. 트위터를 비롯한 소셜 미디어는 정치행위자들이 정보를 전달하고 수용자와 소통하며 정치적 지지를 동원하는 데 중요한 도구가 되었다. 본 논문은 부켈레 대통령이 권력을 장악하는 과정에서 소셜 미디어를 능숙하게 활용한 방법을 탐구하고, 이를 통해 그가 어떻게 자신의 권력을 정당화하고 엘살바도르에서 민주주의의 후퇴를 가속화시켰는지를 분석한다. 본 논문은 2019년 취임 이후 부켈레 대통령의 재임 기간 동안 발생한 세 가지 주요 사건인 (1) 정부 관료 해임, (2) 군부를 동원한 의회 진입, (3) 코로나19 팬데믹 대처를 중심으로, 그의 소셜 미디어 전략과 민주주의의 후퇴에 미친 영향을 면밀히 분석하는 것을 목표로 한다. 본 논문은 질적 연구 설계를 사용하여 부켈레의 트위터 포스팅에 대한 주제 및 담론 분석을 수행하고, 그가 자신의 권력을 정당화하기 위해 사용한 반복되는 주제와 미디어 전술을 제시한다. 나아가 권위주의 통치자의 소셜 미디어 사용이 시민 참여, 정치적 담론, 유권자 동원에 미치는 영향을 강조하면서 보다 광범위한 의미를 검토한다. 본 논문은 엘살바도르의 사례 연구를 통해 디지털 시대에 기술, 정치, 민주주의 간의 복잡한 관계에 대한 이해를 심화시킨다는 점에서 의의를 가진다.
