China-South Korea Relations Revisited

Abstract

The purpose of the thesis is to expand the scope of applicability of to the geographic area of Asia. By applying functionalist perspective to China-South Korea relations, whether functionalism could serve as a viable explanation for Asian regional integration. China and South Korea demonstrate strong interdependence on each other in diverse aspects. Despite such a seemingly intimate relations, the current diplomatic relations are very precarious. The discrepancy deriving the interdependence and risky diplomatic relations is a manifestation that the spillover effect does not take place between them. Finally, a few plausible candidates to investigate the reasons for this phenomenon will be suggested, alongside with future implications of the study. ;이 연구는 최근까지도 유럽의 통합전략과 밀접한 관계가 있다고 사료되었던 기능론 (functionalism) 및 신기능론의 (neofunctionalism) 관점 하, 한중 관계를 분석한 것이다. 비록 한국과 중국은 경제, 민간 교류, 안보 및 국제협력에서의 상호의존성은 증대하였으나, 이 지표들과 무관하게 한국에서 반중정서가 심해지는 것으로 말미암아 한중관계는 오히려 악화된 것을 확인하였다. 이는 기능주의와 신기능주의가 전제하는 경제분야를 포함한 다양한 분야에서의 협력이 타분야에서의 통합으로 이어지는 점진적 확산론 (Spillover Effect)이 한중 관계에서는 적용 되 지 않음을 입증하였다. 이를 통해 한중 관계를 비롯한 아시아 국가관계 속에서 기능론의 적용불가능성의 원인을 분단국가로서의 고유성, 구조적, 역사적 측면에서 제시한다. 이에, 본 연구는 아시아 고유의 지역 특수성과 그와 관련한 아시아 특유의 지역주의 (regionalism) 특성을 제언한다.
