Gender and framing of politicians in election news

Abstract

Media is known to have a vital role in shaping public opinion, even in politics. In previous years, studies have shown a persistent pattern of gender differences in news portrayal in the Philippines from 2016 to 2019 (Gabronino & Sereneo 2019). During the 2022 Philippine National Elections, political issues such as politically motivated violence, disinformation, harassment, and verbal attacks such as misogynistic and homophobic speeches occurred. Given that this occurrence happens in the current elections in the Philippines, the differences in how men and women were portrayed showed that politicians are vulnerable targets, affecting their online presence, and media portrayal. It raises a question: why does varying framing of men and women politicians in election news exist despite the similar political issues occurring during the recent Philippine National Elections? It examines the underlying factors affecting the differences in the news coverage of women and men during elections. This study argues that the marginalization of female voices in the news caused by unequal media visibility and the dominance of male voices in the narratives is more likely to affect gender differences in election news coverage between male and female politicians in the Philippines. This research used secondary data from three news organizations in the Philippines: GMA Network, ABS-CBN, and Philippine Daily Inquirer. It assessed the election-related news focused on nonprogrammatic issues by examining the sex-disaggregate representation as a news source and actor of men and women. It also analyzed the descriptive traits and tone of the description of how men and women politicians were portrayed in the election news articles.
