Abstract

This dissertation delves into Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park, exploring how it aligns with and departs from the popular conduct book tradition of its time. Although many conduct books were written by female authors, their distinctive characteristics that set them apart from their male counterparts have largely been overlooked. To discover what major differences of emphases there might be, I employ “distant reading” to survey a large body of works by representative male and female authors of the genre. This approach allows me to include a wider array of works than would be permitted by traditional “close reading.” My analysis consists chiefly of extracting word frequency lists to visualize and specify the distinctions based on gender. I then apply my findings to see how they can refine our understanding of Mansfield Park. Many scholars have identified Mansfield Park as mere conduct literature, and it has consequently been the least appreciated, most controversial novel in Austen’s oeuvre. The rich complexity of the novel, however, demands a more nuanced exploration than merely framing the novel in a binary manner as either conduct literature or not. Chapter One introduces the conduct book genre and its historical context, emphasizing its role in shaping the ideal of virtuous women for the middle class. In Chapter Two, I utilize computer programs such as Antconc and Rstudio to extract word frequency lists, revealing commonalities and gender-based differences between male and female conduct book authors. Two major themes, religion and self-love, emerge in the list as exclusively prioritized by women, and I apply these findings to my analysis of Mansfield Park in Chapter Three. In the concluding Chapter Four, I suggest that though Austen closely supports female authors’ emphasis on religion and self-love, Mansfield Park also invites the reader to question the major prescriptions of conduct books that promote an unrealistic ideal of the female paragon.;본 논문은 제인 오스틴의 『맨스필드 파크』가 당대 유명한 장르 교훈서(conduct book)의 전통과 어떤 점에서 공통되고 차이를 보이는지를 다룬다. 여성 작가들이 많은 수의 교훈서를 저작했음에도 불구하고 남성작가와 구분되는 그들만의 특성은 상대적으로 과소평가 되어왔다. 이 차이점을 밝혀내기 위해, “가까이 읽기(close reading)”보다 더 많은 수의 작품을 다룰 수 있는 “멀리서 읽기(distant reading)”를 적용하여 여성작가와 남성작가의 작품을 조사하고, 이것이 오스틴의 작품 중 가장 논란이 많은 소설인 『맨스필드 파크』와 어떤 관련이 있는지를 탐구한다. 제1장에서는 교훈문학과 그 역사적 맥락을 소개하며, 이것이 중간계급(middle class)의 도덕적 여성상 형성에 기여한 역할을 살펴본다. 제2장에서는 컴퓨터 프로그램인 AntConc와 Rsutido를 활용하여 단어 빈도 목록을 추출하고, 남성과 여성 교훈서 작가 간의 공통점과 차이를 밝힌다. 이 과정에서, 여성 작가들이 집중한 두 가지 주요 주제는 종교와 자기애(self-love)라는 것이 발견된다. 제3장에서는 앞선 결과를 토대로 『맨스필드 파크』의 줄거리를 분석한다. 마지막 제4장에서는 비록 작품이 여성작가들이 집중한 주제와 긴밀한 연관을 맺고 있음에도 오스틴이 『맨스필드 파크』의 서사 속 남겨놓은 교훈문학에 대한 비판에 집중한다.
