Abstract

본 논문은 본인의 석사과정 졸업 연주 프로그램인 벤자민 브리튼(Benjamin Britten, 1931-1976)의 연가곡 「On This Island, Op.11」과 세르게이 라흐마니노프(Sergei Rachmaninoff, 1873-1943)의 「Sonata for Cello and Piano in g minor, Op.19」에 대한 작품 해설이다. 브리튼은 20세기 영국의 대표적인 작곡가로서, 헨리 퍼셀 이후 오랜 침체기에 빠져있던 영국 음악의 부흥을 일으키고, 특히 성악 작품에 큰 비중을 두고 많은 작품을 남겼다. 브리튼의 초기 작품인 「On this Island, Op.11」은 1937년 피아노 반주로 작곡된 최초의 연가곡이며, 총 다섯 곡으로 구성되어 있다. 「On this Island, Op.11」은 영국의 시인 위스턴 휴 오든(Wystan Hugh Auden, 1907-1973)의 시집「Look, Stranger!」에서 선별한 5개의 시에 붙여진 곡으로, 섬에서 고립된 인간의 외로움을 표현하고 있다. 이 연가곡은 각 곡의 연관성은 없지만, 모든 곡에 짧은 전주를 사용하였고, 음악적 구조를 시의 각 연의 내용에 따라 나누었는데, 각 곡의 짧은 성악 선율의 주제를 반복, 변형, 동형진행하여 전체 작품에 통일성을 주었다. 또한 브리튼은 이 연가곡에서 장, 단조의 조성 체계를 가지면서 곡의 분위기에 따라 부분적으로 비화성음, 불협화음과 같은 현대적 기법을 사용하여 20세기 현대 작곡가로서의 면모를 보여주었다. 라흐마니노프는 19세기 말부터 20세기 초의 러시아를 대표하는 후기 낭만주의 작곡가이자 피아니스트이다. 그의 음악은 20세기 초에 나타난 급진적인 음악 경향으로부터 영향을 받지 않아, 기계적이고 무거운 당시의 러시아 배경에 반대되는 경향을 보여주며, 19세기 말의 낭만주의적 양식이 짙게 나타난다. 라흐마니노프는 수많은 피아노 작품을 비롯해 오케스트라 작품, 실내악, 성악곡, 오페라 등 다양한 장르의 음악을 작곡하였는데, 그의 작품 중 「Sonata for Cello and Piano in g minor, Op.19」는 유일한 첼로 소나타로, 가장 뛰어난 실내악 작품이라고 평가받는다. 낭만 시대의 자유로운 소나타 형식인 이 작품은 총 4악장으로 이루어져 있고, 피아노와 첼로 두 악기의 호흡이 매우 중요한 곡이다. 이 작품은 서정적이고 낭만적인 선율과 화려하고 풍부한 화성, 반음계적 진행, 피아노의 오케스트라적인 음향 효과를 요하는 다양한 주법이 결합된 라흐마니노프의 음악적 특징이 잘 나타나 있다. ;This paper is a program annotation of musical works that were performed for the author's recital for the master's degree. The musical works are 「On This Island, Op.11」 by Benjamin Britten (1931-1976) and the 「Sonata for Cello and Piano in g minor, Op.19」 by Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943). Britten is a prominent composer of the 20th-century England, who revitalized British music following Henry Purcell after a period of long stagnation, and particularly focused on vocal works. Britten's early work, 「On This Island, Op.11」 is the first song cycle with a piano accompaniment, written in 1937, consisting of five songs. 「On This Island, Op.11」 is based on five poems from the book "Look, Stranger!" by the British poet, Wystan Hugh Auden (1907-1973), expressing the loneliness of people isolated on an island. Although there is no connection among songs, Britten used a short introduction in the piano accompaniment for each song and composed the musical structure according to the content of each verse. In each song, a principal melody is repeated and transformed, with non-tonal and dissonant sounds depending on the mood of each piece, which shows characteristics as a 20th-century modern composer. Rachmaninoff is a late Romantic composer and pianist who represented Russia from the late 19th century to the first half of the 20th century. His music did not show the radical musical trends that emerged in the early 20th century, but instead, demonstrated a strong sense of Romanticism which reflected the political background of Russia at the time. Rachmaninoff composed a wide range of genres, including numerous piano works, orchestral works, chamber music, vocal works, and operas. His 「Sonata for Cello and Piano in g minor, Op.19」 is considered to be his finest chamber work and his only cello sonata. The work, written in four movements, features aspects of a free sonata typical of the Romantic period, with a strong emphasis on the interplay between the piano and cello. The music is characterized by its lyrical melodies, rich and complex harmonies, chromatic progressions, and orchestral effects on the piano. The sonata is both technically challenging and musically expressive, making it a masterpiece of chamber music.
