한의 정서를 표현하는 소리 데이터 시각화 표현 연구

Abstract

현대의 소리는 디지털화 되어 그 소리값을 입력 데이터로 삼아 보다 효율적이고 편리하게 시각적 매체로 전이하는 것이 가능하다. 특히 소리 데이터 시각화는 시각과 청각 요소를 복합적으로 사용하여 표현하는 인터랙티브 아트와 예술 분야에서 활발하게 이루어지고 있다. 본 작품 연구는 선행 연구하였던 한의 정서를 표현하는 AI 음악에 대한 연구를 시각적 영역으로 확장해 소리 데이터 시각화 작품을 제작하고자 한다. 한의 정서는 한국의 오랜 역사를 거쳐 형성되고 수많은 예술작품에서 표현되어 오며 한국예술의 가장 핵심적인 개념 중 하나가 되었다. 선행 조사를 통해 한의 정서를 청각적, 언어적으로 분석하고 정의한 연구는 많았으나 이를 시각적인 관점으로 접근하고 분석한 연구 사례는 미비하다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구에서는 이렇듯 기존 자세히 다뤄지지 못했던 한의 정서의 이미지적, 조형적 특징에 대해 면밀히 조사하고 이러한 특징을 기반으로 하는 소리 데이터 시각화 작품을 제작하였다. 이를 위해 문헌조사, 선행 작품 연구, 대중 설문, 설문 핵심 응답자의 심층 인터뷰 등의 과정을 거쳐 한의 정서에 대한 주요 시각적 특징에는 무엇이 있는지 알아내는 형태로 연구가 진행되었으며 이를 분석해 최종적으로 한의 정서를 표상할 수 있는 소리 시각화의 핵심 파라미터를 정리하였다. 본 작품 연구의 1차 목적은 한의 정서를 구성하는 감정적, 심상적, 시각적 요소를 발견해 이를 디지털 시각화 할 때의 유의한 특징을 도출하는 것이다. 이를 위해 감정 시각화, 소리 시각화, 한의 이미지에 관련 선행연구를 분석하고, 한의 정서에 대해 대중이 느끼는 시각적 이미지에 대해 설문 및 심층 인터뷰 과정을 거쳐 한이라는 민족적 감정에 대한 대중적 심상이 어떻게 형성되어 있는지, 차이는 어떠한 지를 분석 및 조사하였다. 2차 목적으로는 작가 본인의 기존 선행 연구인 멜로디 생성 AI를 통한 한의 정서의 음악적, 심상적 탐구에 이어서 위에서 도출한 한의 정서를 구성하는 시각적 키워드들을 소리 데이터 시각화에 활용할 수 있는 요소로 대응시키고 이를 작가의 소리 데이터 시각화 작품에 활용했다. 마지막으로, 본 작품 연구는 한의 정서에 대한 대중의 부정적이고 병리적인 이미지를 탈피하고 한의 정서가 가진 긍정적 측면을 함께 표현해 대중과 선행연구자들의 간극을 좁히는 작품 ‘Shape of Han’제작 및 전시하였다. 조사 결과 한의 정서는 긍정과 부정 모두가 혼합되어 있는 것이며 특히 긍정적 측면의 조명을 중요시 했던 한민, 최상진을 필두로 한 기존의 한국 문화심리학, 미학, 국문학 선행연구자들과는 달리 대중 설문에서 한의 정서를 구성하는 감정을 질문하였을 때, 부정적인 감정 키워드의 응답이 모두 상위권을 차지하였다. 또한 심층인터뷰에서도 한의 정서에 대한 이해가 일제강점기, 소망의 좌절, 끊임없는 외세의 칩입이 있었던 지리적 특성 등이 언급된 데 반해 긍정적인 키워드는 거의 언급되지 않았다. 이에 한의 정서에 대한 정의와 대중들의 인식에는 큰 괴리가 있다는 것을 깨닫고 이를 작품을 통해 알리고 표현하고자 하였다. ;Every sound can be digitized in the modern era, allowing a seamless transition into visual media by using digital values of the sound as input data. Especially in the field of interactive art and other artistic domains, there is a growing trend of actively engaging in sound data visualization to combine visual and auditory elements. This study aims to create sound data visualization artwork that expresses Han's sentiment, which has yet to be studied thoroughly in the visual aspect and to expand the author's previous studies focused on AI-generated music that captures the sentiment of Han. The sentiment of Han has been formed throughout Korea's history and has found expression in numerous works of art, establishing itself as a fundamental concept in Korean art. Through the literature review, many studies analyzed and defined Han audibly and verbally, but the research cases that analyzed the sentiment of Han from a visual perspective were insufficient. Therefore, this study closely investigated the characteristics of the Han in a visual aspect, which has yet to be covered in detail before. Also, the sound data visualization artwork was produced based on these characteristics. Through the literature review, prior research practices, public surveys, and in-depth interviews were conducted to find out the major visual characteristics of Han. The author analyzed these research outcomes and identified the critical parameters for sound visualization that can convey Han's sentiment. The primary objective of this study is to identify the emotional, imagery, and visual elements that constitute Han and derive significant features that can be utilized when digitally visualizing it. The secondary objective is to apply these visual keywords for sound data visualization, following the author's prior research on melody generation AI which explored the musical aspects of Han. Lastly, this work aims to overcome the negative and pathological image of Han held by the public and emphasize Han's positive aspects, and narrow the gap between the public and researchers through the creation and exhibition of the artwork Shape of Han.
