이방인의 시각으로 본 도시 인지

Abstract

이 논문은 서울에서 유학 중인 연구자 본인의 생활을 바탕으로 서울 사람에게 익숙한 환경이 이방인에게 어떤 시각적 경험으로 다가오는지 소개하고, 이방인이 낯선 지역에 융화하는 과정을 분석한다. 낯선 언어 환경에 대한 이해와 경험이 적은 이방인일수록 그 지역의 문자를 비언어적 이미지로 해석하게 되고 이 과정에서 새로운 그래픽이 생겨난다. 연구자가 휴대폰에 기록한 사진에는 흥미를 느낀 것과 호기심 어린 것, 실수할 것이 두려워서 기록한 이미지들이 많다. 이 사진들을 소재로 낯선 지역과 언어권에서 이방인이 겪는 시각적 경험을 재현하였다. 프로젝트는 크게 두 가지로 재현했다. 첫째, 복잡한 레이아웃의 한글에서 겪는 혼란과 걱정을 다루는 문자 프로젝트, 둘째, 연구자는 운전면허를 준비하는 과정의 경험을 다룬 지도 프로젝트까지 이방인이 낯선 언어환경에 융화해 가는 과정을 보여주려고 했다. 이방인의 시각 연구로서 모든 이방인 집단을 대표할 수는 없지만 같은 이방인 신분의 사람들이 공감할 수 있는 특수성이 있다. 불확실성에 처했을 때의 당황은 낯선 공간에 들어가는 모든 사람이 경험하는 것이다. 이 연구는 이방인의 시각에 대한 정의와 원인을 이해하고, 이방인으로서 낯선 환경에서의 그래픽과 문자를 어떻게이해하는지 묘사한다.;Based on the life of a researcher studying in Seoul, this study introduces how a familiar environment for Seoulites has a visual experience for strangers, and analyzes the process of integration of strangers in an unfamiliar area. Strangers with less understanding and experience in an unfamiliar language environment interpret the local characters as nonverbal images, and new graphics emerge in the process. The researcher’s own mobile phone records many things that are interesting or intriguing to the researcher, as well as many images recorded for fear of making a mistake. These images are used as material to reproduce the visual experiences of strangers in unfamiliar areas and languages. The project was mainly achieved through two parts, first, a text item on the confusion and worry experienced by seeing the complex typography of Korean, and second, a map item on this researcher's experience in preparing for the driving test, which was used to show the process of integrating a stranger into an unfamiliar language environment. As a visual study of strangers, although it cannot represent the entire group of strangers, the identity of being a fellow stranger has a specificity that can resonate. When people are in uncertainty, panic in an unfamiliar space is experienced by all. This research seeks to understand the definition and causes of stranger vision, and description of a stranger make sense of graphics and text in unfamiliar environments.
