존 R. 브링클리와 포퓰리즘

Abstract

본 연구는 ‘염소-선(腺)(goat-gland) 의사’로 유명했던 존 리처드 브링클리(John Richard Brinkley)의 생애를 재고찰하고, 포퓰리스트로서의 면모를 강조하고자 하는 시도다. 1920년대 후반부터 1940년대 초반까지 브링클리는 미국 국내외에서 의사, 정치인, 그리고 라디오 방송인(국경 파괴범)으로 활동하며 유명세와 악명을 동시에 떨쳤다. 기존 연구는 브링클리의 의사로의 행적과 그 부정적인 면모만 강조했지만, 본고에서는 브링클리가 가진 포퓰리즘에 초점을 맞추어 어떻게 그의 비전을 홍보했으며, 그의 영향력이 미국 국내외에서 얼마나 중요했는지 복원하고자 한다. 본고는 브링클리의 활동을 의사, 정치인, 그리고 국경 파괴범 세 가지로 구분하여 그가 가진 포퓰리즘을 강조하고자 한다. 비록 브링클리의 포퓰리즘은 구체적인 방안을 제시하지 않았으며, 엘리트와 중산층의 지지를 얻지 못했다는 한계점이 있다. 그럼에도 브링클리와 포퓰리즘이 중요한 이유는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 브링클리를 통해 포퓰리즘의 재정의가 가능하다. 포퓰리즘이 자본주의와 결합하지 못한 시대착오적이고 비합리적인 운동이라는 기존 연구와 달리 브링클리는 의료와 라디오 사업으로 부츨 축적한 인물로 자본주의와의 결합 가능성을 보여주었다. 둘째, 포퓰리즘 연구사의 공백을 채울 수 있다. 브링클리는 1890년대 인민당(People’s Party) 운동과 1930년대 활동했던 휴이 롱(Huey P. Long)과 찰스 코글린 신부(Charles E. Coughlin) 같은 포퓰리스트들 사이의 연결고리이자 포퓰리즘 연구사에서 공백을 채워주는 역할을 한다. 이와 같이 본 연구는 브링클리 통해 포퓰리즘의 재정의와 연구사의 공백을 채울 수 있다는 중요성을 시사한다.;This study makes an attempt at reexamining the life of John Richard Brinkley, known as the ‘Goat Gland Doctor,’ and highlighting his populist qualities. From the late 1920s to the early 1940s, Brinkley earned both reputation and notoriety at the same time while working as a physician, politician and radio personality (border buster) in the United States and abroad. While previous research centered on his negative traces as a doctor only, with a focus on his populism, this paper aims to restore his way he promoted his vision and his influence he had so significantly inside and outside of the US. The paper puts emphasis on his populism with a division of his career into 3 such as the physician, politician and border buster. Populism of Brinkley has limitations in that it failed in suggesting specific measures and being supported by the elites and middle class. Nevertheless, the reasons why Brinkley and his populism are important are as follows. Firstly, Brinkley allows us to redefine populism. Contrary to the precedent studies assuming that populism is the anachronistic and irrational movement which could not be merged into capitalism, as the one who accumulated wealth from medicine and radio businesses Brinkley showed the potential it could be combined with capitalism. Secondly, it is possible to fill a gap in the history of populism research. While filling such void in the populist research, Brinkley plays a role of a link in connecting between the 1890s People’s Party movement and 1930s populists such as Huey P. Long and Charles E. Coughlin. As such, this study has significance in that it revealed the redefinition of populism can be set and a gap in the research history can be filled through Brinkley.
