Abstract

This thesis is a study on the song cycle 《Frauenliebe und Leben(A Woman's Love and life)》 by Johann Carl Gottfried Loewe(1796-1869), which was performed at the graduate recital for the completion of the master's degree. Loewe was a composer of the early 19th century and was called “North German Schubert” for his prolific composition of about 350 songs and 200 ballads. Except for a few ballads, most of his works are forgotten, but his excellent composition technique in ballads is also shown in songs. Loewe’s 《A Woman's Love and life》composed based on a series of poems by Adelbert von Chamisso(1781-1838). This song cycle consists of 9 songs that deal with the life of a woman who goes through love and marriage, pregnancy and childbirth, and the life of a woman suffering from bereavement. It expresses the happiness and joy felt in the simple life of an obedient woman and represents Loewe’s song style. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between poetry and music, and the analysis results can be summarized as follows. First of all, in this work, each song has a close relationship with each other based on the subject matter of the temporal connection of ‘a woman's love and life’. From the first song to the sixth song, the tonality is set in relation to the dominant key, and the seventh song presents a new turning point due to the birth of a child. In addition, the first and last songs of the song cycle have the same time signature(6/8) and although the tonality is different, the unity of the entire song cycle can be seen by setting the parallel key. And the theme of the poem was emphasized and well-balanced music was pursued by repeating the first stanza at the end of the song. Loewe focused on the effective delivery of lyrics through dynamic contrast and rapid alternation of tonality while repeating a simple theme melody for each song, and also, it was converted into a new atmosphere through various modulations. Furthermore, Loewe used the piano as an important role in creating the atmosphere of the poem, but it can be seen that the piano accompaniment was faithful to the ‘background role’ and was generally close to a simple and subordinate accompaniment form. Thus, although Loewe is a composer of the Romantic era, due to the relatively simple and concise characteristics of the work, this song cycle can be seen as a work belonging to the transitional period between classicism and romanticism rather than work as a romantic art song.;본 논문은 석사 과정 이수를 위한 졸업 리사이틀 프로그램인 요한 칼 고트프리트 뢰베(Johann Carl Gottfried Loewe, 1796-1869)의 연가곡 《여인의 사랑과 생애(Frauenliebe und Leben)》에 관한 연구이다. 뢰베는 19세기 작곡가로서, 약 350여 곡의 가곡들과 200여 곡의 발라드(Ballad)를 다작하며 ‘북독일 슈베르트’로 불렸다. 소수의 발라드를 제외하고는 그의 작품 대부분이 잊혔으나 발라드에서의 탁월한 작곡 기법은 그의 가곡에서도 나타난다. 아델베르트 폰 샤미소(Adelbert von Chamisso, 1781-1838)의 연작시를 바탕으로 작곡된 뢰베의 연가곡 《여인의 사랑과 생애》은 사랑과 결혼, 임신과 출산, 그리고 사별을 겪는 한 여인의 일생을 다루는 9개의 곡으로, 순종적인 여성의 소박한 삶에서 느끼는 행복과 기쁨을 표현한 것으로 뢰베의 가곡 스타일을 대변한다. 본 연구는 시와 음악과의 관계를 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 하였고, 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저, 이 작품은 ‘여인의 사랑과 생애’라는 시간적인 연계성에 따른 소재를 바탕으로 각 곡들이 서로 긴밀한 연관성을 지니고 있다. 제1곡에서 제6곡까지는 딸림조 관계로 조성이 설정되어 있고, 제7곡에서는 아이의 탄생으로 인한 새로운 전환점이 제시된다. 또한 연가곡의 첫 곡과 마지막 곡은 동일한 박자인 6/8박자가 배치되어 있고, 서로 조성은 다르지만 같은 으뜸음조의 조성을 설정함으로써 연가곡 전체의 통일성 또한 엿볼 수 있었다. 원시에서의 1연을 곡의 종결구에 반복하면서 시의 주제를 강조함과 동시에 음악의 균형미를 추구하였다. 뢰베는 각 곡마다 단순한 주제 선율을 반복하면서 다이내믹의 대비와 조성의 빠른 교대를 통해 가사의 효과적인 전달에 주력하였고, 이와 더불어 다양한 전조를 통해서 새로운 분위기로 전환시켰다. 더 나아가 뢰베는 피아노를 시의 분위기를 조성하는 중요한 역할로써 사용하였지만, 피아노 반주부는 전반적으로 단순하고 종속적인 반주 형태에 가깝고 ‘배경적 역할’에 충실하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 뢰베의 《여인의 사랑과 생애》은 비교적 평이하고 간결한 작품 특징으로 인해 낭만주의 예술가곡으로서의 작품이라기보다 고전주의와 낭만주의의 과도기에 속하는 작품이며 초기 예술가곡의 형태로 볼 수 있다.
