원섬유 소재의 감성적 특성을 활용한 직조조형 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 자연에서 얻을 수 있는 원(原)섬유 소재의 원초적인 특성을 활용하여 인간의 감수성을 자극하는 직조조형 작품에 대한 연구이다. 섬유는 인간과 역사적·문화적으로 오랫동안 유대관계를 형성해 왔기 때문에 특수한 감수성을 지닌 매체로 자리 잡아 왔다. 그러나 우리가 일상에서 마주하는 섬유는 일반적으로 가공을 거친 섬유이며 자연의 원초적 물성이 제거된 상태이다. 연구의 핵심은 섬유가 가진 다양한 예술적 요인 중 원섬유 소재의 물성에 내재된 미학적 측면에 주목하여 관람자의 감성을 불러일으키는 원초적 특성을 알아내는 것이다. 현대미술에서 섬유는 이성적이며 감성적 요인을 지닌 감각적 소재로 받아들여져 왔다. 예술 작품의 조형적 표현 수단을 넘어 재료의 가치가 주체적으로 자리하며 작가의 이념 또는 감정을 전달하는 매개체 역할을 한다. 연구자는 예술에서 이러한 섬유의 역할은 본질적이고 원초적인 성질에서부터 그 가치를 발휘한다고 생각하였다. 따라서 원섬유 소재에 대한 연구 및 실험을 통해 그 가치를 재조명하고자 한다. 연구자는 본 논문에서 섬유가 될 수 있는 자연 물질을 뜻하는‘원섬유 소재’라는 새로운 용어를 재정의하여 제시하고자 한다. 용어의 출현 계기는 천연이라는 개념을 지녔으나 가공을 거치는 천연섬유에 모순적인 부분이 있음을 인지하면서부터 시작되었다. 이론적 배경에서는 자연의 순수한 물성을 지닌 원섬유와 천연섬유를 화학 가공의 여부를 기준으로 구분할 것이다. 화학 가공은 실을 만들기 위한 방적 공정뿐만 아니라 그 이외에 정련, 표백 따위를 거치지 않은 순수한 원섬유를 의미한다. 새로운 용어의 독자적인 재정의는 순수한 원섬유 소재의 가치를 조명하는 출발점이다. 용어의 재정의를 시작으로 개념에 맞게 식물성 섬유와 동물성 섬유로 분류하고 작품의 주재료인 닥나무(paper mulberry)와 생사(raw silk)를 중심으로 소재가 지닌 특징을 연구할 것이다. 이러한 시도는 원초적인 물성 탐구의 중요성을 강조하고 나아가 예술적 섬유 소재의 범주 확장을 시도하고자 한 것이다. 본 연구 작품은 총 9점으로 구성되어 있으며 작품에 쓰인 소재는 모두 원섬유 소재에 기반을 두고 있다. 원섬유 소재를 사용하기에 앞서 연구 및 실험 과정에서 생사를 물리적·화학적 힘으로 정련하여 특징을 비교 분석하였으며 자연적 가치를 훼손하지 않으면서 화학적 정련 실험 결과와 동일한 결과를 도출할 수 있는지 확인하였다. 뿐만 아니라 소재에 직접 물리적인 힘만을 가해 물성의 변화를 시도하여 얻은 섬유의 독자적인 물성과 감성 코드를 제직 구조와 결합하여 직조조형 작품을 제작하였다. 본 논문은 원섬유가 지닌 감각적·감성적 특성이 인간의 감수성을 자극하는 매체로서 어떠한 역할을 하는지를 직조조형 작품과 그에 대한 연구를 통해 보여주고자 한다. 작품 제작 과정에서 섬유의 본질적인 가치를 탐구함으로써 새로운 예술적 가치를 지닌 섬유 소재를 발견하고 이를 통해 연구자의 독자적인 조형언어 구축을 시도하는 것에 의의를 두고자 한다.;The purpose of this study is to research into the woven textile forms stimulating our human sensitivity by examining the primordial characteristics of the raw fiber materials. As it has long been related historically and culturally with our human beings, the textile has been established as a medium featuring some special sensitivity. However, the textile we face in our ordinary life is the processed one with its primal physical properties removed. This study aims to investigate into the primordial characteristics of the raw fiber materials evoking audience’s sensibility, focusing on the aesthetic aspects inherent in the physical properties of the raw fiber materials among their diverse properties In the contemporary art, the textiles are perceived as sensory materials having both rational and emotional attributes. In addition, the textiles have a value of material beyond the formative expression of the art works, while playing a mediating role delivering artist’s ideology or emotion. The researcher has perceived that such roles of the textile are valuable, beginning from its essential and primal properties. Hence, the researcher attempts to reilluminate the value of the raw fiber materials through research and experiment. The researcher attempts to redefine and suggest a new terminology ‘raw fiber material’ meaning the natural materials processible into the textile. The terminology was conceived, while the researcher perceived that the fiber implying ‘natural’ was a material processed, which would be contradictory. In the Chapter discussing the theoretical background of study, the raw fiber materials are distinguished from the natural textile on the ground of chemical processing. The natural textile is the raw material processed neither mechanically nor chemically. The re-defining of a new terminology may well be a starting point for discussing the value of the pure raw fiber materials. Then, the raw fiber materials are divided into plant-based and animal-based fiber materials. This study is focused on muberry and raw silk to examine their characteristics. Such an attempt is designed to highlight the importance of the primitive properties centering around the main materials of researcher’s artwork ‘mullberry’ and ‘raw silk’ and thereby, emphasize the importance of the investigation into the primitive properties and further, expand the category of the artistic fiber materials. Researcher’s work consists of 9 pieces in total, while the materials for them are all made of the raw fiber materials. Before using them, they were refined physically and chemically for a comparative analysis, while confirming whether the result would be same as that of the chemical refining experiment not damaging their natural values. Moreover, the researcher combined the unique properties and emotional codes of the raw fiber materials with their woven structure through a direct physical force and thereby, produced the woven textile works. This study examined the roles of the sensitive and emotional characteristics of the raw fiber materials as media stimulating our human sensitivity intermediately. Then, this study discovered the raw fiber materials showing a new artistic value and attempted to construct a researcher’s own independent formative language.
