글로벌 대중음악 지형의 변화

Abstract

본 논문은 케이팝 걸그룹 블랙핑크(BLACKPINK)의 음악을 중심으로 케이팝의 글로벌 성공 요인을 분석하고 글로벌 대중 음악 지형의 변화를 살펴보았다. 또한 케이팝 아이돌이자 아시안 여성으로서의 정체성이 음악적 스타일로 연결되는 방식과 이들의 성과가 문화적 혼종화를 이끄는 양상을 다루었다. 특히 블랙핑크의 음악이 주변적 정체성을 표현하기 위해 전략적으로 음악적 오리엔탈리즘을 활용한 것으로 보고 그 구체적인 특징을 분석하였다. 이를 위해 블랙핑크의 음악 중 대표성을 지닌 곡을 선정하여 장르, 구조, 모드, 선율의 측면에서 분석을 진행하였고, 각 음악적 특징이 어떤 방식으로 주변성과 타자성을 강화하는지 살펴보았다. 분석 결과, 블랙핑크의 음악은 힙합과 팝, EDM의 장르적 특징을 혼합하여 구조적 토대를 마련하였다. 이들의 음악은 팝의 벌스-코러스 구조에 따라 주제의 중요도를 구분하고, EDM의 브레이크-드롭 구조에 따라 중심이 되는 주제를 강조한다. 주로 코러스에 위치한 주제가 곡 전체의 중심이 되는데, 이는 곡이 전개되는 동안 반복해서 등장하거나 유기적으로 발전하며 중요도가 극대화된다. 또한 장르와 구조적 짜임새에 따라 가장 강조된 것은 모드의 사용이었다. 모드는 특징적인 음정 관계를 통해 일반적인 조성체계와는 다른 차이를 형성한다. 이러한 차이는 선율의 움직임을 통해 강화되며, 모드의 분위기를 효과적으로 조성한다. 특히 구조적, 선율적 방식을 통해 부각되는 모드의 특징적인 음정 관계는 조성체계에서 벗어난 낯선 것으로서 주변성과 타자성의 표현으로 연결된다. 따라서 음악적 오리엔탈리즘은 장르, 구조, 모드, 선율의 종합적인 측면에서 접근할 때 파악할 수 있었다. 위와 같은 분석 결과를 토대로 본 논문은 블랙핑크가 글로벌 문화 지형에서 갖는 의미를 읽어낸다. 음악적 오리엔탈리즘의 전략적 활용은 글로벌 대중음악 시장에서의 성공 요인이 되었으며, 이러한 산업적 성공은 문화적으로 주변적 위치를 점하는 케이팝과 아시안, 여성의 존재를 탈주변화하는 동시에 글로벌 문화의 혼종화를 이끌어냈다. 그리고 서구 중심적인 문화지형의 탈중심화와 문화의 혼종화를 위해 케이팝이 지닌 아시아 정체성을 대안적인 가치로 제시한다. 케이팝을 중심으로 한 아시아 정체성은 지리적, 실체적 정체성에 근거하기보다 케이팝의 주변성과 혼종성, 서구중심적 문화지형에 대한 저항성에 근거한다. 이는 케이팝이 지닌 역동성을 토대로 대안적인 문화적 시각과 이분법적인 문화지형을 탈중심화하는 가능성으로 작용할 것이다.;This paper aimed to analyze the global success factors of K-pop, focusing on the music of the K-pop girl group BLACKPINK, and examined the changing landscape of global pop music. It also addressed the way their identity as both K-pop idol and Asian women is connected to their musical style and investigated how their achievements contribute to cultural hybridization. In particular, the paper analyzed the specific features of BLACKPINK music, suggesting that they have strategically used musical orientalism to express the marginalized identity. To this end, their representative pieces were selected and related analysis was conducted in terms of genre, structure, mode and melody. In addition, it examined how musical characteristics enhance marginality and otherness. The analysis shows that a structural foundation of BLACKPINK music was established by blending the genre characteristics of hip-hop, pop and EDM. Their music follows the verse-chorus structure of pop music to determine the importance of themes and emphasizes the central theme according to the break-drop structure of EDM. The theme, mainly located in the chorus, becomes the central theme of the entire song, repeatedly appearing or organically evolving throughout the development of the song to maximize its significance. Furthermore, depending on the genre and structural texture, the greatest emphasis is put on the use of modes. Modes create a distinct difference from the general tonal systems through characteristic pitch relationships. Such a difference is reinforced through the motion of melodies, effectively creating the atmosphere of the mode. In particular, the specific pitch relationships of modes, highlighted through the structural and melodic manner, are connected to expressions of marginality and otherness as something unfamiliar beyond the tonal systems. Therefore, musical orientalism could be understood by the comprehensive approach in terms of genre, structure, mode, and melody. Based on the analytic findings above, this paper aimed to read the significance of BLACKPINK within the global cultural landscape. The strategic utilization of musical orientalism led to their success in the global pop music market. Such an industrial success not only positioned K-pop and Asian women out of the cultural periphery but also led to the hybridization of the global culture. Moreover, for decentering of the Western-centric cultural landscape and cultural hybridization, Asian identity of K-pop is presented as alternative values. Rather than based on the geographical or substantial identity, Asian identity of K-pop is based on its marginality, hybridity and resistance to the Western-centric cultural landscape. It will be able to serve as a possibility to suggest the alternative cultural perspective and decenter the binary cultural landscape based on the dynamism of K-pop.
