Death's Different Dimensions

Abstract

본 연구는 하이데거의「존재와 시간」에 드러나는 죽음의 무규정성 개념을 확장하여 보다 더 포괄적인 죽음의 무규정성 개념의 가능성을 살펴보고자 한다. 하이데거의 죽음 개념에 관한 기존 연구는 활발히 진행되었으나 그중 죽음의 무규정성에 관한 논의는 비교적 적은 비중을 차지한다. 본고는 죽음의 무규정성 개념을 죽음의 실존론적 차원, 죽음의 사회적 차원, 그리고 죽음의 정치적 차원에서 각각 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위하여 우선 하이데거의 죽음 개념에 대한 선행 연구들을 검토하고, 「존재와 시간」에서 죽음의 특징 중 하나로 언급되는 무규정성을 구체적으로 파악하고자 한다. 무엇보다 하이데거의 「존재와 시간」은 존재의 의미에 대한 탐구이기 때문에 죽음의 무규정성에 대한 기존 연구들은 그것의 실존론적 차원에 대한 고찰로 한정된다. 따라서 죽음에 관한 보다 포괄적인 이해를 위해 다른 차원들을 살펴야 할 필요성을 제기하며 논의를 다음의 구조로 전개할 것이다. 2장의 목적은 「존재와 시간」 전체 중 죽음 개념을 그와 관련된 내용과 함께 살펴본 뒤, 「존재와 시간」에서 죽음의 위치를 확인하는 것이다. 하이데거가 2부, 1장에서 서술하는 죽음의 종류와 다양한 특징들을 살펴보고, 죽음의 무규정성을 분석하여 시간적 무규정성, 공간적 무규정성 그리고 상황적 무규정성으로 새롭게 제시할 것이다. 그리고 죽음의 시간적, 공간적, 상황적 무규정성이 존재론적, 사회적, 정치적 차원으로 확장되는 것을 살펴본다. 그리하여 죽음의 존재론적 차원의 경우, 상황적 무규정성이 배제된 채로, 오직 시간적 및 공간적 무규정성만이 드러난다는 사실이 발견될 것이다. 3장에서는 죽음의 사회적 차원을 살펴보기 위해 톨스토이의 「이반 일리치의 죽음」과 보부아르의 「아주 편안한 죽음」을 다룰 것이다. 특히 죽음의 사회적 차원에서는 죽음을 앞두고 살아가고 있는 현존재의 일상적 경험들에 주목할 예정이다. 따라서 「이반 일리치의 죽음」에서는 드러나지 않는 죽음의 상황적 무규정성이 「아주 편안한 죽음」에서 드러나고 있다는 사실을 확인하여 현존재의 죽음에 대한 보다 생생한 경험을 살펴보고자 한다. 4장에서는 죽음의 정치적 차원을 살펴보기 위해 버틀러의 위태로움 개념과 아메드의 특권 개념을 다룰 것이다. 정치적 차원으로 내려옴으로써 우리는 죽음의 위협에서의 차이를 볼 수 있게 된다. 이렇게 죽음의 상황적 무규정성의 차이를 확인함으로써 죽음이 단순히 무규정적인 것이 아니며 그 위협이 각 개인들에게 어떻게 다른 정도로 다가가는지 살펴보고자 한다. 마지막으로 본 연구의 한계점들을 제시하고, 본고의 의도 및 과정을 전체적으로 살펴보며 마칠 것이다. ;The aim of this study is to expand from Heidegger’s concept of the indefiniteness of death explained in Being and Time and put forth a more comprehensive understanding of the indefiniteness of death. Heidegger’s concept of death has been widely discussed, but not many have lingered over the indefiniteness of death Heidegger develops in his concept of death. In this thesis, we will go through whether or not the indefiniteness of death is as indefinite as it seems by moving from the existential dimension of death to the social dimension of death and, lastly, to the political dimension of death. In order to do so, we will first go through previous literature on Heidegger’s concept of death and, specifically, on the indefiniteness of death Heidegger mentions when explaining the characteristics of death. Literature on Heidegger’s discussion of the indefiniteness of death remains on the existential level as the whole project of Being and Time is to find the meaning of being. After addressing a need to bring this down to different levels for a more comprehensive understanding of dying, we lay out the structure of this thesis. The aim of Chapter Two will be to examine the general project of Being and Time, the concept of death, and the place the concept of death has in the overall project of this work. We will go through the different types of death Heidegger explains in Division Two, Chapter One, and the different characteristics of death. We will then break down the indefinite character of death into temporal indefiniteness of death, spatial indefiniteness of death, and situational indefiniteness of death, which are concepts proposed in the thesis. We break down the indefiniteness of death to see which ones are addressed at the existential dimension, social dimension, and political dimension of death. At the existential level of death, the situational indefiniteness of death will be absent, and we will only see the temporal and spatial indefiniteness of death. The aim of Chapter Three would be to examine the social dimension of death and in order to do so, we will refer to Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Beauvoir’s A Very Easy Death. In this dimension, we will look at the lived experiences of dying. In The Death of Ivan Ilyich, the situational indefiniteness of death would be absent, but in A Very Easy Death, the situational indefiniteness of death would be acknowledged. The aim of Chapter Four would be to examine the political dimension of death. To do so, we will refer to Butler’s theory of precariousness and Ahmed’s concept of privilege. By coming down to the political dimension, we are able to see differences in power and the threat of death. We will see a difference in the situational indefiniteness of death and a difference in how death is not merely indefinite but how the threat of death hangs over individuals in different degrees. Lastly, we will end by addressing some limitations of this thesis and reexamining the aim and journey of this thesis.
