영화 <스피드 레이서>의 음악 분석을 통한 마이클 지아키노(Michael Giacchino)의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

This thesis is a study on the musical characteristics of the Movie, <Speed Racer (2008)>, composed by composer Michael Giacchino (1967~ ). The composition technique in MichaelGiacchino's work can be largely divided into four characteristics: the use of opening music, the setting of character themes, the use of music and the application of rhythm according to circumstances, orchestra-oriented organization, and Mickey Mouseing techniques. In particular, rhythm is actively applied, and dynamics are given to the scene through pattern changes, rhythm changes, and variations, and suggest situations. Giacchino not only writes the existing composition method, but also composes music that is a link between scenes to describe the psychology and atmosphere between characters in the movie. It helps the audience become more immersed in the movie by properly appearing percussion and traditional instruments that fit the situation while using a certain pattern or simple light motif that is repeated with ostinato. Through this study, the relationship between the real-life film and music of the cartoon, the music direction method according to the atmosphere of the scene, the rhythm application method in the action genre, and the variation and development of the opening theme were identified. As such, Michael Giacchino effectively delivers the action genre called <Speed Racer> by using the motif of existing cartoons and using his own musical grammar. In other words, Michael Giacchino helps the audience to immerse and understand the movie through music that reflects the director's intention to direct it. Through the characteristics of his work, he laid the theoretical foundation for music techniques for better film music. In the field of learning to study music as well as film music-related workers, this research should continue.;본 연구의 목적은 영화 음악 작곡가 마이클 지아키노(Michael Giacchino, 1967~)의 작품 중 워쇼스키 자매(Wachowski Sisters, 1965~) 감독의 영화 <스피드 레이서(Speed Racer), 2008>의 음악적 특징에 관한 연구이다. 마이클 지아키노는 미국의 작곡가로 주로 영화, 드라마, 게임의 음악 작곡을 맡고 있으며 아카데미 음악상, 에미상 시리즈 부문 최우수 음악 작곡상, 그래미상, 아카데미 음악상 등 여러 상을 받았다. <스피드 레이서>는 일본 만화가 요시다 타츠오(Tatsuo Youshida, 1932~1977)가 지은 동명의 만화를 원작으로 하며, 이 영화의 열렬한 팬이던 워쇼스키 감독이 워너 브라더스의 지원을 받아 제작하였다. 이 작품은 타고난 재능으로 레이싱 세계에서 스타로 떠오른 주인공 스피드 레이서가 비리와 음모로 얼룩진 레이싱 세계에서 죽음을 맞이한 형을 대신해 거대 기업 로열튼의 스카우트 제안을 거절하고 가족과 친구로 이루어진 레이스 모터스 팀과 함께 세계 레이싱 대회에서 우승하기까지의 이야기를 화려한 CG와 따뜻한 가족애로 그린 액션 영화이다. 이러한 소재와 장르적 특징을 나타내기 위해 마이클 지아키노가 어떠한 음악적 어법을 사용했는지 연구하는 것이 이 논문의 목적이다. 이를 위해 모든 음악은 영화 장면과의 상관관계를 토대로 분석되었다. 본 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위해 먼저 만화가 실사화된 할리우드 영화에 대해서 살펴보고자 한다. 마이클 지아키노의 작품 경향을 파악한 후 본격적으로 <스피드 레이서>의 음악(57곡)을 분석하였다.
