강요된 용서의 경험에 대한 실천신학적 고찰

Abstract

People mostly regard forgiveness as beautiful action; the victim provides the perpetrator with mercy. However, most of us are often forced to forgive someone or others in our society. In the midst of that, most Christians are compelled to forgive others based on the words of the Bible. I observe the complex power relationships that involve forced forgiveness, identify the criteria of forgiveness and the principle of power that operates within it, and analyze the distorted relationships. Forced forgiveness can have emotional, physical, and spiritual impact on the individuals. According to David Graber, forced forgiveness consists of a vertical relationship, much like the creditor-debtor relationship. Based on the result of the focus-group interviews, I argue that the relationship formed by forced forgiveness is similar to the relationship between the creditor and the debtor. The debtor (victim) forgiven by God should dismiss the creditor (perpetrator) to pay their debt to God (God’s forgiveness), and then, thanks to God’s forgiveness, the creditor has the right to demand the payment from the debtor. This research finds an alternative to this vertical relationship in Walter Wink’s understanding of the non-violence of Jesus. The Non-violence of Jesus not only aims at horizontal relationships but also focuses on the active agency of the victim. As a way to bring this understanding into pastoral counseling, the relational culture theory is brought as an interlocutor to frame the relationship dynamics in terms of the concept of connection and mutual empathy. In this process, the process of being stripped naked when the creditor asks for the cloak in Matthew 5 : 40 is explored as an alternative relational dynamic that those who experienced forced forgiveness can utilize in their experience to achieve a horizontal relationship that mirrors the non-violence of Jesus. The resistance by nakedness is presented as the basis of pastoral counseling strategy that counters the unjust hierarchy formed in the forced forgiveness relationship.;세간에서는 용서를 피해자가 가해자에게 건네는 아름다운 행위라고 칭송한다. 그러나 우리 사회의 용서는 종종 누군가의 강요로 인해 이루어지기도 한다. 그중 기독교인은 성서를 근거로 용서 베풂을 강요 받는다. 이 연구는 강요된 용서 안에 작용하는 수직적 관계를 관찰하고, 그 관계가 개인에게 미치는 영향을 분석하는데 목적을 둔다. 강요된 용서의 수직적 관계는 용서를 강요하는 이가 용서를 하는 이보다 위에 자리하는데, 이 관계는 마치 데이비드 그레이버가 말한 채권자-채무자의 관계와 유사하다. 강요된 용서의 수직적 관계가 채권자-채무자의 관계와 유사하다는 주장은 포커스 그룹에 참여했던 연구참여자들의 토론 결과에 근거한다. 신에게 용서받은 채무자(피해자)는 빚(신의 용서)을 갚기 위해 채권자(가해자)를 용서해야 하고, 신의 용서로 인해 채권자는 채무자에게 빚을 요구할 수 있는 권리를 가진다. 본 연구는 이러한 수직적 관계에서 벗어날 수 있는 대안으로 월터 윙크가 말한 예수의 비폭력을 제안한다. 예수의 비폭력은 수평적 관계를 지향할 뿐만 아니라 피해자의 관계적 능동성에 주목한다. 본 연구는 피해자의 관계적 능동성을 설명하고 목회적 상담에 적용하기 위해 관계문화이론을 사용한다. 관계문화이론은 피해자가 피억압자의 자리에서 이룬 관계적 능동성을 설명할 수 있는 도구다. 마태복음 5장 40절에서 채권자가 겉옷을 요구할 때 채무자가 보인 벌거벗음은 예수의 비폭력을 반영한 행동으로, 용서를 강요 당한 이가 수평적 관계를 이루기 위해 행한 관계의 역전이다. 벌거벗음의 저항은 수직적 관계에 대항하고 수평적 관계를 그려나갈 목회상담의 전략이 될 것이다.
