Johannes Brahms Viola Sonata No.2 in E♭ Major, Op. 120에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 Johannes Brahms(1833-1897)의 Viola Sonata No.2 in E♭ Major, Op.120 작품의 연구분석과 브람스가 살았던 19세기 시대의 특징 및 브람스의 생애와 그의 음악적 특징에 관한 연구이다. 브람스는 19세기 독일의 대표적 작곡가로 피아니스트와 지휘자를 겸하며 활동했다. 그는 고향인 함부르크와 오스트리아 빈을 중심으로 음악 활동을 하였으며 바로크 양식과 고전적 형식을 살리면서도 자신만의 서정적이고 낭만적인 감성을 작품에 잘 표현한 대표적인 신고전주의 작곡가이다. 그는 일생동안 24곡의 실내악 작품과 4개의 교향곡을 작곡하였으며 피아노곡, 가곡, 관현악곡 등 많은 작품을 작곡하였지만 오페라와 표제음악은 작곡하지 않았다. Viola Sonata Op.120는 브람스의 마지막 실내악 작품이자 마지막 소나타 작품이다. 처음에는 클라리넷 소나타로 작곡되었으나 초연 이후 비올라 소나타로 브람스 본인이 직접 편곡하였으며 그의 원숙미가 잘 드러나는 이 곡은 현재까지도 비올라 연주자들의 주요 레퍼토리로 많은 사랑을 받고 있다. 본 논문에서 다룰 Op.120의 No.2 in E♭Major는 3악장으로 구성되어 있으며 1악장은 일반적인 고전 소나타 형식, 2악장은 트리오가 포함된 복합 3부분 형식, 3악장은 1개의 주제와 5개의 변주가 포함된 변주곡 형식으로 되어 있다. 작품분석에 앞서 브람스가 살았던 19세기 시대의 특징과 그의 생애, 음악적 특징을 알아보고, 분석을 통하여 각 악장의 구조와 형식, 화성, 리듬 등이 어떤 특징을 가지고 나타나며 그가 어떠한 음악관을 가지고 있었는지 연구해보고자 한다.;Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) was a representative composer of the 19th century in German romantic music. He worked in Vienna, Austria as well as Germany where he was born. J. Brahms mainly composed traditional genre same as Symphony, Concerto, Chamber music. Because he retained Baroque and classical music technique. He composed twenty-four chamber music pieces in his lifetime. <Sonata Op.120> is his last chamber music piece. This piece well reveals his musical knowledge and technique which are acquired throughout his lifetime. This piece is originally written as a clarinet sonata. However, he arranged into a viola sonata after premiere. When the viola was not considered as a solo instrument, this sonata opened the door for viola as solo instrument. Among them sonata no.2 has feminine vibe and grace. The sonata consists of three movements. The first movement is traditional classic sonata form, the second movement is compound ternary form and the third movements is variation form consists of theme and five variations. Syncopation, hemiola, different rhythmic contrast shows characteristic of Brahms well. He created his own style of music by using elements from the past. He also influenced great deal on 20th century’s composers. In this paper, I analyzed the background of <Viola sonata No.2 in E♭Major, op.120> and the overall musical structure, melody, harmony, form and rhythm of the piece. I hope to contribute for musicians to understand more in depth in his music and this sonata.
