문학작품에 나타난 섭식담론

Abstract

This study examines the extent to which sixteenth and seventeenth century English poems appropriate early modern dietry literature and humor theory that carry sociocultural, ethical, and religious resonances. Analyzing Ben Jonson’s “To Penshurst” (1616) and “Inviting a Friend to Supper” (1616), Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queene (1590) and John Milton’s Paradise Lost (1674), this present study brings into focus the ways in which discourses of eating enable us to explore new directions in poetry-reading. To be specific, I demonstrate the social contexts of the remarkable outpouring of medicinal humor theory and popular dietary literature in early modern England in order to rethink the significance of eating as a social, ethical, and religious act. Then, I argue that eating in the poems of Jonson, Spenser, and Milton is enmeshed respectively with issues of social distinction, ethics, and theology. Put another way, food and diet in the works of these three poets offer important historical, ideological, and intellectual frames with which we can trace the dynamic interplay of cultural discourses and poetry-writing in early modern England.;본 연구는 근세시대 섭식(eating)담론에 대한 사회문화 및 종교적 이해를 통해 16-17세기 영시를 분석하고자 한다. 근세시대 섭식담론은 식이요법과 체액설(humoralism)을 바탕으로 하며 의학적, 영양학적 지식을 전달하는 일차적 목표에서 더 나아가 사회문화적, 윤리적, 그리고 종교적 함의를 지닌다. 구체적으로 본 연구는 벤 존슨(Ben Jonson)의 「펜스허스트」(“To Penshurst”)(1616)와 「저녁식사에 친구를 초대하며」(“Inviting a Friend to Supper”)(1616), 에드먼드 스펜서(Edmund Spenser)의 『페어리 여왕』(The Faerie Queene)(1590), 그리고 존 밀턴(John Milton)의 『실낙원』(Paradise Lost)(1674)을 섭식이라는 창을 통해 분석하여 영시를 이해하는 새로운 방향을 제시하고자 한다. 이를 위해 근세시대 체액설과 식이요법 문학의 폭발적인 확산에 주목하고 이러한 확산의 배경이 되는 사회적 맥락을 살펴봄으로서 섭식의 사회적 윤리적 그리고 종교적 함의에 대해 고찰한다. 그 후 존슨, 스펜서, 그리고 밀턴의 영시에 나타난 섭식이 각각 사회계층의 구분, 올바른 섭취의 윤리, 그리고 신학적 순종과 밀접하게 연결되어 있음을 주장한다. 작품에 드러난 음식과 식이요법은 역사적이고 사상적인 체계로 볼 수 있으며 근세 영국에서의 사회문화적 담론과 문학 사이의 상호작용을 시사한다는 것이 본 연구의 주장이다.
