영어 동사의 다의성 연구

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 영어 동사 cover, hit, lose, save를 대상으로 어휘의 원형 의미와 은유적 의미 간에 개념적 연관 관계가 있음을 개념적 은유 이론에 따라 확인하는 것이다. Lakoff와 Johnson(1980:6)은 “인간의 기본 관념 체계는 은유에 기반”한다고 주장했다. 이는 인지 언어학 관점에 따라 개념적 은유가 인간의 보편적인 배경지식과 경험을 통해 축적된 정보를 근간으로 하는 인간의 개념 체계에서 만들어진다는 사실을 함축한다. 또한 Clausner와 Croft(1999)는 우리의 감각과 경험을 통해 학습된 지식이 영상 도식의 형태로 개념 체계에 저장되며 이는 영상 도식 은유로 표현된다고 밝혔다. 따라서 본 논문은 영어 동사의 은유적 의미를 영상 도식 은유 등의 개념적 은유를 토대로 심상적이고 경험적으로 이해하는 과정을 세부적으로 제시하고자 하였다. 이에 더해 본 논문은 어휘의 의미 관계가 서로 상호작용하며 망 구조로 형성되어 있다는 Brugman과 Lakoff(1988)의 의미망 접근 방식을 수용하여 어휘의 원형 의미와 은유적 의미 간의 연결 관계를 Ibarretxe-Antuñano(1999a;1999b)가 제시한 속성 선택 처리(Property Selection Process) 방식을 통해 파악하고자 하였다. 속성 선택 처리는 어휘의 원형 의미를 구성하는 원형적 속성의 일부가 제한적으로 선택되고 보존되어 은유적으로 확장된 의미에 포함되는 과정을 보여준다. 본 논문은 네 편의 영영 사전에서 cover, hit, lose, save의 타동사적 용법으로 기록된 사전적 정의와 예문을 수집하여 분석했다. 본 논문의 연구 방법은 총 네 단계로 진행되었다. (i) 먼저 어휘의 사전적 정의를 요약하고 (ii) 원형 의미로 쓰인 예문을 통해 기본 영상 도식과 원형적 의미 속성을 정리했으며 (iii) 어휘가 은유적 의미로 쓰인 예문을 분석하여 (iv) 각 문장의 변형된 영상 도식과 개념적 은유를 제시했다. 본 논문에서는 영어 동사 cover, hit, lose, save의 은유적 의미를 임의적인 것이 아닌 어휘의 원형 의미에서 도식적으로 변형되거나 원형적 의미 속성이 추상화되어 표현된 것으로 분석하였다. 이는 다의성이 원형 의의만으로 해석된다는 추상화 접근 방식을 반박하며 다의성을 의미망 구조 안에서 서로 상호작용하는 관계라고 주장하는 의미망 접근 방식을 뒷받침한다. 이에 더해 본 논문이 요약한 영어 동사 cover, hit, lose, save의 원형적 속성이 은유적으로 확장 처리되어 은유적 의미에 보존된 현상을 통해 다의어의 원형 의미와 은유적 의미가 연결되어 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 개념적 은유 이론에 따라 다의성을 분석하는 것의 합리성과 필요성을 강조했다는 데 의의가 있다.;The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the conceptual relationships between the prototypical and metaphorical meanings of four English polysemous verbs cover, hit, lose, and save in accordance with the Conceptual Metaphor Theory. Lakoff and Johnson (1980:6) proposed that “human thought processes are largely metaphorical,” which means that conceptual metaphors are constructed in our conceptual system based on our universal knowledge and experiences. In addition, Clausner and Croft (1999) explained that our knowledge acquired through sensory and bodily experiences is saved as image-schemas in our conceptual system and that they are represented as image-schema metaphors. In this context, this thesis aims to describe an imagistic and empirical process to understand the metaphorical meanings of the four English verbs through conceptual metaphors including image-schema metaphors. This thesis follows Brugman and Lakoff’s (1988) semantic network approach, which argues that the semantic relationship of the meanings of a word forms a network. This thesis also adopts Ibarretxe-Antuñano’s (1999a;1999b) Property Selection Process, which shows the process of how some of the prototypical semantic properties of a word are selected, preserved, and metaphorically expanded. This study collected the dictionary definitions and illustrative sentences of the four English transitive verbs cover, hit, lose, and save from four English-English dictionaries. The research methods of this thesis are as follows: (1) the dictionary definitions of the verbs were summarized; (2) the basic image-schema structure and the prototypical meaning properties of each of the four verbs were presented; (3) some examples containing the four verbs with metaphorical meanings were analyzed; (4) the transformed image-schema structures and conceptual metaphors for the examples were proposed. The results of the study show that the metaphorical meanings of the four verbs are obtained from having their basic image-schema structures transformed or having their prototypical meaning properties abstracted. On one hand, this study refutes an abstractionist approach that the polysemy of a word can be understood solely by its abstract core sense. On the other hand, this study supports the semantic network approach that polysemy is the interrelated relationship within the semantic network. This study also reconfirms the importance of analyzing polysemy through the Conceptual Metaphor Theory.
