텍스처 분리를 이용한 비가독적 글자체 디자인 연구

Abstract

우리의 소통 언어는 문자언어에 국한되어있지 않다. 오히려 우리가 외부로부터 얻는 정보의 3분의 2 이상은 시각 체계를 통해서 뇌에 전달된다. 즉 이미지를 통해 정보를 얻고 소통하는 것이다. 시각언어는 이미지, 형태, 색채, 크기, 위치, 움직임 같은 시각적 요소를 구성해 언어화된다. 따라서 그래픽디자이너가 디자인하는 행위는, 시각언어를 다루어 특정 메시지 전달을 위해 특정 의도를 가지고 시각적 요소를 조작하는 것이라 할 수 있다. 이때 디자이너는 시각 문법, 즉 사용자의 지각과 인지, 감성적 요인을 고려하여 디자인을 진행하여야 생성된 시각 이미지의 전달 효과를 높일 수 있을 것이다. 효과적인 시각 이미지의 전달은 정제된 이미지를 통해서만 이루어지지 않는다. 오히려 새롭거나 사용자의 예상을 벗어난 시각 이미지를 통해 인지과정의 부조화를 유발해 사용자가 새로운 스키마를 생성하게 만들고, 그 과정 중에 흥미 유발과 더 깊은 각인을 시킬 수도 있다. 연구자는 이 시각 표현에 흥미를 느끼게 되었고, 시각 문법의 한 갈래로써 텍스처 분리를 비가독적 방법으로 응용한 서체 디자인을 통해, 비가독적 시각 표현의 활용방안을 확인하고 확장하고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 이론적 배경을 통해 시각언어, 시각 문법의 정의를 살펴보고 사용자의 지각과 인지 과정을 인지과학 관점에서 이해한다. 이어서 시각디자인에서 비각독적 시각 표현의 의의와 개념을 선행하고 비가독성의 원리를 유형별로 살펴본다. ‘텍스처 분리’ 챕터에서는 시지각의 기초를 이루는 ‘텍스처 분리’가 시각언어로써 가지는 역할과 의의를 살피고 그 원리를 인지과학의 관점에서 설명한다. 선행사례에서는 비가독적 시각문 활용의 선행사례들을 ‘글자체 외부의 텍스처 분리’, ‘글자체 내부의 텍스처 분리’ 두 분류로 나누어 분석한다. 연구 전개에서는 앞선 이론과 사례 분석을 토대로 선행 연구를 진행하고, 본 연구에서 텍스처 분리 이용을 통해 서체의 형태를 개발한다. 형태의 개발은 문자 형태를 이루는 기본 텍스처들의 변형을 통한 분리 방법과 서체의 외곽선들의 교차와 면의 중첩을 통한 텍스처 분리 방법을 이용했다. 이어서 개발된 서체들의 적용을 통해 그 효과를 확인하고 본 연구의 의의를 정리한다.;This study aims to suggest the 'Illegible Visual Expressions' as an effective tool to provide efficient graphics, and to research for their specific application methods. The 'Illegible Visual Expressions' provides users with unique visual images in unconventional ways, different from those of ordinary readable visual expressions. The visual uniqueness of the 'Illegible Visual Expressions' arouse users' interest: it makes users put more visual efforts to try to understand what they are as they do not correspond to any of the image schema which is stored in the users' long term memory. Thus the 'Illegible Visual Expressions' draws users' interest effectively and engage them in more active interaction on the course of visual communication in which users find and choose information by themselves. In the first half, this study comprises of the visual language, the definition of visual grammar, the process of the visual information processing, and the principles of the visual perception. In the latter part, it examines the meaning and concepts of the Illegible Visual Expressions, first, and then, the principles of the Illegible Visual Expressions case by case accordingly. In the first chapter on 'texture segregation', it addresses the role and significance of the 'texture segregation' as a visual language and explains the principles of its mechanism in terms of cognitive science. In the following chapter of case studies on 'texture segregation', it analyzes the causes of illegibility in font configuration and the causes of concentration of visual attention by examining cases of illegibility for texture segregation. Furthermore it discusses the effect of which 'texture segregation’ occurs or not in font configuration. The basis for the methods of this research is provided at the end of the chapter. In the next chapter, a typography and 2 types of illegible font design are developed by using 'texture segregation'. In the course of the developments of the typographies, 'basic texture deformation in the grid' method is used to bring 'texture segregation' effect. Also, as another 'texture segregation' method, are deployed the cross of the outlines of the typographies and the overlaps of their surfaces. The follows are the summary of the effect of the developed typographies: Firstly, imagery and emotions are able to be conveyed through such segregated textures of the developed typographies. The morphological characteristics of each texture expresses such imageries and emotions as metallicity, vibration, sleekness, chaos, etc. The significance of emotional expressions in imagery is that such expressions help users to pay more attention to the graphics and to be engaged more. Secondly, we can come up with eye-catching graphics by means of visual regularity which is generated from typing fonts. It has been proved that certain visual regularity was created when basic textures were being typed repeatedly in a font system. That is, such visual regularity can give a repeated rhythm to the generated graphics, and be applied as a pattern. This type of pattern could be used as an emphasis for contents or as a visual element to draw users' attention. Thirdly, by using these fonts, it is possible to generate the Illegible Visual Expressions instantly. The Illegible Visual Expressions helps authors to convey their intentions such as certain images, emotions, etc. effectively as shown in the example of 'To be, or not to be' from the previous chapter. Therefore, this paper substantiates the possibility and utilization of the Illegible Visual Expressions as an innovative visual language tool: The study experimented the development of the Illegible Visual Expressions on the basis of the visual perception theory, so called 'segregated texture' and applied them to typographies actually. Furthermore, this study reaches to the conclusion that the Illegible Visual Expressions are not just another additional tool, but can exist as an independent visual language which I, the researcher, experienced as the research and visual experiment was being actualized. This study opens a door to the infinite potentiality for the Illegible Visual Expressions that can add new dimensions to conventional graphics, which this paper was not able to cover wholly at this point, This paper suggests that, based upon the theory, 'segregated texture', further experiments are conducted continuously to acquire more various illegible visual expressions on the new level.
