소재 변형을 통한 매듭 형태의 조형미 연구

Abstract

In the history of the human civilization development, the knots have played a core role in making the living necessities or recording the human history, while having been used for decorations. Owing to their unique formative aesthetics, the knots have been used in not only such practical areas as architecture and handicraft but also such areas as pure art, while having been recognized anew for their artistic potential. Particularly since 1960s, many fiber art works and sculptures using the flexibility, variability and steadfastness of the knots have emerged in the history of art, while their importance have been admitted. The purpose of this study is to explore some new directions for the fiber art forms through research into its materials, while discussing the 3D formative fiber artworks, focusing on their forms. For this purpose, the researcher attempted to establish her own unique formative language through the experimental research into the forms and textures of the knots. To this end, the researcher paid attention to the formative aspects of the knot, first of all. As a result, the researcher discovered the concern about the aesthetic value of the knots that had been invisible, being overwhelmed by their functions and utility, and confirmed the artistic potential of the knots through historic, architectural and fine art approaches. Furthermore, in order to express the knots as formative works and establish an independent area through variation of the materials, the researcher analyzed the formative elements of forms and texture intensively. The line or one of the basic elements of the plastic art emerges as a formative characteristic of the knot. We can afford to make diverse forms by using the lines having an infinite potential, which is related with the possibility that the knots can be varied in their forms when they are tied and untied. In manufacturing the knots, the researcher examined the possibility of introducing some varied texture to visualize the forms of the knot. Moreover, the researcher reviewed the knots theoretically, while analyzing the diverse cases of expressing the texture, and thereupon, examined the background of researcher’s works and analyzed the forms of the works and the materials thereof. Through such processes, 9 works of the knot have been produced. In the process of manufacturing the works, the researcher used the curves and nodes created when the knots were tied and untied to expand their scale as forms and constructive objects. Besides, the researcher could create some soft and rich visual and sensuous effects within the space. This study may well be significant in that the flexibility of the knot has been reduced to a fixed object to suggest a formative shape and thereby, a new formative expression has been suggested through a sensuous stimulation of the material, and thereby, in that new expression of forms has been suggested for the fiber art.;인류 문명 발전사에서 매듭은 기원전부터 이를 이용해 생활에 필요한 도구를 만들고 기록을 하는 등의 핵심적인 역할을 하였으며 장식적인 용도로도 사용되었다. 매듭은 특유의 조형성으로 인해 건축과 공예와 같은 실용적인 영역으로부터 순수 예술 분야에 이르기까지 사용되어 오며 그 예술적 가능성이 새롭게 인식되고 있다. 특히 1960년대 이후 미술사에서는 매듭의 유연성, 가변성, 견고함 등의 특성을 표현 요소로 활용한 섬유 예술 작품들과 조각 작품들이 미술사에 등장하며 그 중요성이 알려지기 시작했다. 본 논문은 매듭의 형태에 주목하여 입체 조형 작품을 전개함과 동시에 소재 연구를 통해 질감 변형을 창안하여 섬유 조형의 새로운 방향을 모색한 작품 연구이다. 본 연구는 매듭의 형태와 질감 표현 방법에 대한 실험 연구를 통해 연구자만의 독자적인 조형 언어를 정립하는 데 목적을 둔다. 이에 본 연구는 매듭의 형태적 측면에 먼저 주목하였다. 연구자는 기능이나 용도에 의해 가려져 보이지 않던 매듭의 미적 가치에 대한 관심을 발견하고 이에 매듭의 역사적 고찰과 건축, 미술사적인 고찰을 통해 매듭의 예술적 가능성을 확인하였다. 아울러 매듭을 조형 작품으로 표현하고 소재의 변형을 통해 독자적 영역을 구축하고자 형태와 질감의 조형적 요소를 집중적으로 분석하였다. 조형 예술의 기본 요소 중 하나인 선은 매듭의 형태적 특징으로 나타난다. 무한한 가능성을 가진 선을 활용하여 다양한 형태를 만들어낼 수 있는데, 이러한 특징은 매듭이 맺히고 풀릴 때 독창적인 형태 변용이 가능하다는 특징과도 연관이 있다. 작품 제작에서는 매듭 형태를 시각화하기 위해 변형된 질감을 도입하는 것에 대하여 고찰하였다. 그리고 매듭의 이론적인 고찰과 다양한 질감 표현 사례들을 분석하였으며, 이를 바탕으로 연구자의 작품 제작 배경을 살펴보고 작품의 형태와 사용된 재료를 분석하였다. 이 과정을 통해 완성된 9점의 연구작품을 제시하였다. 작품을 제작하며 매듭을 맺고 풀며 생기는 곡선과 마디를 활용해 형태 구성과 구축적 오브제로서의 스케일을 확장하였고, 이는 공간 안에서 부드럽고 풍부한 시각적, 감각적 효과를 만들어낼 수 있었다. 본 연구는 매듭이 가진 유연성을 고정된 오브제로 환원하여 조형적 형태를 제시하고 재질감의 감성적 자극을 통해 섬유 예술의 새로운 조형적 표현 방법을 제시함에 연구의 의의를 둔다.
