질 조뱅(Gilles Jobin)의 아바타 댄스 작품 「브이알_아이(VR_I)」의 특성 연구

Abstract

This study explores the artistic characteristics of Gilles Jobin's avatar dance 「VR_I」. Studying avatar dance with the aim of discovering the latest trend of art of dance, a connection was found between avatar dance and Loie Fuller, the pioneer of modern dance. To determine clear examples of Fuller’s contribution to the emergence of modern dance in the 21st century with her groundbreaking “skirt dance” in the late 19th century, this study entails an in-depth analysis of the artistic quality of 「VR_I」 and the consequence of the inheritance of Fuller’s artistic tendency. This study identifies the achievement of the pioneering artist by looking at her artistic tendency from three perspectives: “media approach,” “illusional image,” and “the quality of gesamtkunstwerk,” and also the artistic characteristics of 「VR_I」 in technical, virtual and interactive senses. In addition, this study discovers the artistic quality of avatar dance by discussing Fuller’s artistic tendency, which has served as a contribution to the development of avatar dance “from analog media to digital media,” “from illusion to digital virtuality,” and “from gesamtkunstwerk to digital gesamtkunstwerk.” In conclusion, this study presents examples of the influence of Fuller’s artistic tendency on contemporary dance and demonstrates adaptations of her dance in detail. The significance of this study lies in the fact that it analyzes the dance aesthetics of avatar dance, which is emerging as a new form of performing arts, and traces its origin in dance history. This study can hopefully highlight the potential of avatar dance as a progressive dance genre which can promote the discussion regarding art of dance at the forefront of new media dance and the significant influence of Fuller on contemporary dance in the 21st century, and also shed new light on her underestimated contribution to today’s dance art.;본 논문은 안무가 질 조뱅의 아바타 댄스 「브이알_아이」의 특성을 고찰하는 연구이다. 여기서 아바타 댄스란 메타버스라는 가상세계 속 아바타를 춤의 주체로 삼는 무용 안무를 지칭한다. 연구자는 무용예술의 최신 경향을 심구하고자 하는 의지와 함께 아바타 댄스를 눈여겨보는 과정에서 현대무용의 선구자 로이 풀러와의 연결점을 발견할 수 있었다. 이에 연구자는 19세기 말 당시 ‘치마춤’이라 일컬어진 혁신적인 춤의 형태로 현대무용의 등장을 이끈 풀러의 공헌이 21세기에 이어져 발견되고 있는 결정적인 사례를 규명하고자 「브이알 아이」의 무용예술적 특징을 분석하고 풀러와의 관계 안에서 구체적인 계승 발전 결과를 해석하였다. 연구 과정은 로이 풀러의 예술관을 ‘매체적 접근’. ‘환영 이미지’, ‘총체예술적 성향’이라는 세 가지 관점 아래 정리함으로써 선구적인 그녀의 업적을 파악하였고, 이후 「브이알_아이」의 특성에 대한 작품 분석을 진행하였다. 이어 도출된 분석 내용을 바탕으로 ‘아날로그 매체에서 디지털 매체로’, ‘환영에서 디지털 가상으로’, ‘총체예술에서 디지털 총체예술로’ 아바타 댄스에 발전을 이룬 로이 풀러의 예술적 특성을 논함으로써 아바타 댄스가 지닌 미학적 특징의 원형을 풀러의 작품 스타일로부터 찾아냈다. 논의 결과, 본고는 로이 풀러의 예술적 특성이 컨템포러리 댄스에 계승된 사례를 제시함과 동시에 그녀 춤의 구체적인 변용 양상을 증명할 수 있었다. 본 논문의 의의는 미래형 공연예술의 새로운 형태로 대두되는 아바타 댄스의 미학적 특징을 진단하고 무용사적인 연원을 추적하였다는 점에 존재한다. 이를 통해 연구자는 뉴미디어 댄스의 최전선에서 춤에 대한 논의에 활력을 불어넣을 아바타 댄스가 지닌 발전 가능성에 주목이 이루어질 수 있길 바란다. 더불어 풀러의 존재가 21세기 현대춤에 미친 유의미한 영향력과 무용의 역사 안에서 충분히 논의되지 못한 그녀의 위상이 현대적인 관점에서 재조명될 수 있길 기대하는 바이다.
