The Sri Lankan government has actively implemented a quota system at the local government level since 2018 as a result of the convention of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women to garner the Sustainable Development Goal. By taking Sri Lanka as a case study, this research explored women’s empowerment through political representation to find out the critical success factors and challenges with an analytical framework driven by the Empowerment Process Model in contesting six variables (knowledge, availability of power-oriented goals, self-efficiency, competence, targeted actions, and reflection of impact). The study found that social acceptance and beliefs in the quota system, sufficient knowledge, opportunities to work as a group, clear paths and guidance to perform their duties in terms of competency development, targets, and goals as critical success factors, whereas a lack of pre-decided key performance indicators, a high level of social and religious influences, and the impact of other patricians were identified as challenges.-
