기술 과잉시대를 살아가는 유쾌한 전술

Abstract

My work is a tactic employed to live with humor in this contemporary world of technological surplus. To provide grounds for this, I aim to describe why I feel this contemporary world is an era of technological surplus, along with specific examples and personal views about how my work involves humor as a tactical act. Today, we are living an era of convenience, where we can order a product made on the other side of the planet on our smart phones, and expect to have it delivered the day after. A wide array of smart devices armed with amazing new technology guarantees a more convenient and safer life, while striving for innovative growth achieved through improved efficiency. This is the result of humanity’s progress, while also an endless affirmation of the desire for comfort; a danger accelerating our doom. Our state of technological surplus caused by the excessive pursuit of convenience bears a paradox. Like taking on a greater inconvenience in order to use a convenient piece of technology, or instead of inventing a technology to address an inconvenience, inventing the inconvenience in order to utilize a technology. Such conditions are incomprehensible absurdities as well as fascinating subject matter. Through Art, I transform such paradoxes into objects of play. Creating situations of palpable absurdity using convenient devices, or intentionally choosing an inefficient method of working that contradicts growth-centered thinking. An attitude oriented towards regression, a refusal of the pursuit of infinite progress and becoming post-human, and the practice of anti-utilitarianism, inefficiency, absurdity, and regression; these are my tactics. Based on my everyday experience involving machines, I develop my work that twist and deconstruct dominant rules and structures, and this is where humor is generated. Humor induces joy, and while it makes life more pleasant, it also serves the social function of subverting conventional wisdom. Humor is a methodology used by many artists to create works, as well as being a major expressive language of my own. I’ve categorized the methodology of the tactics I employ as ‘maintaining anti-utilitarianism’, ‘disregarding the premise’, and ‘going counter’, and through each methodology, describe the process in which meaning is manifest in the work. Machine Bully Project, where convenient devices are tormented and toyed with, Summer Cheer, where humidifiers are cheered on during monsoon season to create an ironic situation, and This is Smart Cutter!, a series of inefficient nail clippers, are analyzed.;본인의 작업은 기술 과잉의 동시대를 유쾌하게 살아가기 위해 실천하는 전술이다. 이에 대한 근거를 제시하기 위해 동시대를 기술 과잉의 시대라고 느끼는 이유와 본인의 작업이 전술적 행위로서 어떻게 유쾌감을 동반하는지 구체적인 예시와 개인적인 견해를 본 논문에 서술하고자 한다. 오늘날 우리는 지구 건너편의 생산물을 스마트폰으로 주문하면 내일 집에서 받아볼 수 있는 편리한 시대에 살고 있다. 놀라운 신기술로 무장한 각종 스마트 기기는 역사 속 그 어느 때보다 편리하고 안전한 삶을 보장하며 더 높은 효율성을 통한 혁신 성장을 도모한다. 이는 진보하는 인류가 일구어낸 결실이기도 하지만 편해지고자 하는 욕망을 끝없이 긍정하며 파멸을 가속하는 위험이기도 하다. 과도하게 편리를 추구한 나머지 기술 과잉이 되어가는 흐름은 모순을 내포한다. 편리한 기술을 사용하기 위해 더 큰 불편을 감수하거나, 불편해서 기술을 발명하기보다 기술을 사용하기 위해 없던 불편을 발명하는 등의 세태는 이해할 수 없는 부조리이자 흥미로운 대상이다. 본인은 미술을 통해 이러한 모순을 유희의 대상으로 탈바꿈한다. 편리한 기기를 이용해 명백한 부조리의 상황을 만들거나 성장 중심적 사고에 반하는 비효율적 작업 행위를 의도적으로 택한다. 이는 퇴보를 지향하는 태도로, 무한한 발전을 추구하며 포스트 휴먼으로 나아가기를 거부하고 무효용, 비효율, 불합리, 도태 등을 적극적으로 실천하는 본인의 전술이다. 본인은 일상의 기기 경험을 바탕으로 지배적인 질서와 구조를 비틀고 해체하는 작업을 전개하는데, 이 과정에서 유머가 발생한다. 유머는 즐거움을 유발하며 삶을 유쾌하게 하는 동시에 지배적인 통념을 전복하는 사회적 기능을 가진다. 유머는 많은 미술가가 작품 창작에 애용한 방법론이자 본인 작품의 주요한 표현 언어이기도 하다. 본 논문은 본인이 구사하는 전술의 방법론을 ‘무효용 지속하기’,‘전제 무시하기’, ‘역행하기’로 분류하고, 각 방법론을 통해 작품이 의미를 발현하는 과정을 중심적으로 서술한다. 이러한 관점을 바탕으로 편리한 기기를 괴롭히고 농락하는 〈기계농락 프로젝트〉, 장마철에 가습기를 응원하며 역설적 상황을 연출하는 《Summer Cheer》, 비효율적 손톱깎이를 선보이는 《This is Smart Cutter!》의 작품들을 분석한다.
