Abstract

본 논문은 필자의 석사 졸업 연주회 프로그램 중 벤자민 브리튼(Benjamin Britten, 1913-1976)의 연가곡 《Les Illuminations(광명)》에 관한 연구로, 브리튼이 랭보의 시를 어떻게 음악적으로 표현하였는지를 중점적으로 연구하였다. 브리튼은 20세기 현대 작곡가로, 헨리 퍼셀(Henry Purcell, 1659-1695) 이후 가장 위대한 영국 작곡가로 평가된다. 그는 다양한 장르의 음악을 작곡하였는데 특히 성악 음악에 주력하였다. 그의 가곡집 중 《Les Illuminations》은 브리튼이 1939년 제 2차 세계 대전 무렵 미국에서 쓴 작품으로 총 10곡으로 구성되어 있으며 프랑스의 상징주의를 대표하는 시인 쟝 니콜라 아르튀르 랭보(Jean-Nicolas-Arthur Rimbaud, 1854-1891)의 작품 『Les Illuminations』에서 시를 채택하여 음악을 붙였다. 전쟁으로 인해 혼란했던 시기에 ‘이상의 세계’를 추구한 랭보의 시는 브리튼에게 깊은 감명을 주었고, 이를 바탕으로 《Les Illuminations》을 작곡하게 된다. 브리튼은 시의 음악적 표현을 위해 음악에서 해결되지 않는 불협화의 사용이나 극단적인 반음계 진행을 포함한 과감한 화성 활용과 같은 현대적인 음악 기법과 선법의 사용 또는 불협화의 조성적 해결의 전통적인 음악 기법을 함께 사용하였다. 또한 그는 연가곡 안에서 시를 짜임새 있게 구성하였는데, 특히 제 9곡 <Parade>의 시 「Parade」의 마지막 문장을 발췌하여 연가곡 중 총 3곡에 사용함을 통해 주제적 통일을 이루어내었으며, 낭송조와 가사그리기의 사용 또한 두드러진다. 《Les Illuminations》의 가사로 사용된 시는 제 6곡의 시 「Marine」를 제외하고 모두 산문시이다. 운율감이 내재되어 있지 않은 자유로운 형식의 산문시를 음악으로 나타내기 위해 브리튼은 가사를 말하듯이 읽는 낭송조를 사용하였고, 가사의 의미를 직접적으로 나타내기 위한 가사그리기가 자주 나타난다. 마지막으로 상징주의 시의 모호한 묘사와 암시적이고 상징적인 분위기를 나타내기 위해 때로는 음악이 선율로써의 의미를 갖지 못하고 음향으로써의 기능만을 가진 채 나타나기도 한다. ;This thesis concerns the song cycle 《Les Illuminations》 by Benjamin Britten(1913-1976) in the master's graduation concert program of the author, focusing on how Britten expressed Rimbaud's poetry musically. Britten is a 20th-century contemporary composer, regarded as one of the greatest British composers after Henry Purcell(1659-1695). He composed various genres of music, especially vocal music. Among his song cycle, 《Les Illuminations》, was written by Britten in 1939 in the United States around World War II. It consists of a total of 10 songs, and he set his music to the lyrics from the poem of 『Les Illuminations』 by Jean-Nicolas-Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891), a poet representing French symbolism. Rimbaud's poetry, which pursued an ‘ideal world’ in a chaotic time of war, deeply inspired Britten to compose 《Les Illuminations》. For the musical expression of the poem, Britten used a combination of modern musical techniques such as unresolved dissonances in music or bold harmony with extreme chromatic progressions, along with traditional musical techniques of tonal resolution of dissonance. Britten arranged the poems organically within the song cycle; in particular, he extracted the last sentence of 「Parade」's poem from the nineth song, <Parade>, and used it in a total of three of his songs, thereby achieving thematic unity. The poems used for the lyrics of 《Les Illuminations》 are all prose poems except for the 6th song, <Marine>. To express prose poetry in a free-form prose without a sense of rhyme in music, Britten used a recitative like melody that reads the lyrics as if they were spoken. The use of word-painting to directly express the meaning of the lyrics is also prominent. To express the ambiguous description and suggestive and symbolic atmosphere of symbolist poetry, music sometimes has no meaning as a melody, but only functions as a sound.
