영화<제이슨 본>시리즈 3부작의 음악 분석을 통한 존 파웰(John Powell)의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 작곡가 존 파웰(John Powell, 1963~)이 작곡을 담당한 영화 <제이슨 본(Jason Bourne)>시리즈 3부작인 <본 아이덴티티(The Bourne Identity), 2002>, <본 슈프리머시(The Bourne Supremacy), 2004>, <본 얼티메이텀(The Bourne Ultimatum), 2007>의 음악적 특징에 관한 연구이다. 존 파웰은 할리우드를 기반으로 활발하게 활동하는 영화 작곡가 중 한 명으로 60편이 넘는 작품 경력을 이어오고 있다. 그는 애니메이션, 액션, 코미디, 드라마에 이르는 다양한 장르의 영화에서 자신의 역량을 선보이고 있다. 존 파웰은 폭넓은 음악적 소양을 바탕으로 영화음악의 새로운 장을 열어가는 인물로 평가되고 있다. 영화 <제이슨 본>시리즈는 주인공 제이슨 본이 자신의 정체성을 밝혀내기 위해 조직과 싸움을 벌이는 스토리를 담은 액션 영화이다. 존 파웰의 음악적 특징을 분석하기에 앞서 할리우드 시리즈 영화의 음악을 조사한 결과, 장르가 다른 시리즈 영화라도 각 편마다 유사한 서사 구조로 이루어지는 경향이 있다는 것을 발견했다. 또한 존 파웰의 생애와 작품 세계 연구를 통해 그의 음악적 배경과 동향을 파악하였다. 스토리의 흐름에 따라 음악이 어떻게 변주되는지 연구하기 위해 영화 세 편의 큐시트를 작성한 결과, 서사구조에 따른 공통된 테마곡을 다섯 가지로 구분할 수 있었다. 각각의 테마 모티브는 다양한 형태로 변주되어 본이 정체성을 찾아갈 때, 위기 상황을 암시할 때, 도망갈 때, 추격당하는 상황에서 사용되었다. 존 파웰은 시리즈 영화의 연결성을 강화하기 위해 공통된 오프닝 음악을 사용하였고, 메인 테마곡을 내러티브에 따라 다양하게 변주하여 전체 영화의 분위기 결속에 일조하였다. 또한 세계를 배경으로 펼쳐지는 스토리에 맞춰 지역의 특색을 나타내는 민속 악기를 사용하였고, 전자 악기와 오케스트라의 결합으로 박진감을 강화하는 액션 영화 음악을 만들어 내었다. 본 논문이 시리즈 영화 음악에 관한 체계적인 연구의 발판이 되길 기대하며, 존 파웰에 관한 지속적인 연구에 보탬에 되기를 바란다. ;This thesis features a musical study of the three parts of the Jason Bourne series "The Bourne Identity, 2002", "The Bourne Supremacy, 2004", and "The Ultimate", composed by composer John Powell (born 1963). John Powell is one of the active Hollywood-based film composers and has a career of more than 60 films. He is presenting his competence in a variety of genres, including animation, action, comedy, and drama. John Powell is regarded as a person who opens a new chapter in film music based on his extensive musical knowledge. The "Jason Bourne" series is an action movie about the main character Jason Bourne fighting with an organization to find out his identity. Prior to analyzing John Powell's musical characteristics, a study of the music of Hollywood series found that even movies of different genres tend to have similar narrative structures in each episode. Also, through John Powell’s life and the world of his work, grasped his musical background and trends were identified. As a result of writing a cue sheet for three movies to study how music changes according to the flow of the story, it was possible to classify five common themes according to the narrative structure. Each theme motif was variated in various forms and used in a situation where Bourne was chased, when he sought identity, hinted at a crisis situation, and ran away. John Powell used common opening music to strengthen the connectivity of the series films, and variated the main theme according to the narratives, contributing to the atmosphere of the entire film. In addition, folk instruments that represent local characteristics were used in line with the story unfolding in the world background, and action movie music was created that strengthened the sense of realism by combining electronic instruments and orchestras. It is hoped that this paper will serve as a springboard for systematic research on series film music and contribute to continuous research on John Powell.
