영화 <스타 트렉(Star Trek), 1979>의 음악 분석을 통한 제리 골드스미스(Jerry Goldsmith)의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 영화 <스타 트렉(Star Trek), 1979>의 음악 분석을 통해 알아본 미국의 영화음악 작곡가 제리 골드스미스(Jerry Goldsmith, 1929-2004)의 음악적 특징에 대한 연구이다. 골드스미스는 수백편의 영화음악을 작곡한 할리우드 최고의 영화음악가 중 한 사람으로서 영화 장면에 드러나지 않은 부분까지도 음악으로 섬세하게 표현할 수 있는 음악가로 평가 받아왔다. 로버트 와이즈(Robert Wise, 1914-2005) 감독의 영화 <스타 트렉>은 1966년 동명의 TV 시리즈물이 원작으로, 미래의 우주 공간을 배경으로 우주선 엔터프라이즈호가 겪게 되는 여러 가지 모험과 사건을 다룬 작품이다. 본 논문에서는 상상의 산물인 SF 영화의 스토리텔링을 위해 작곡가 제리 골드스미스가 어떠한 음악적 어법을 가지고 영상을 음악으로 표현하였는지 알아보고자 한다. 제리 골드스미스의 음악적 특징을 연구하기에 앞서 작곡가의 생애와 작품 세계를 연구하여 그의 음악적인 배경에 대해 알아보았다. 여기에 총 13편에 이르는 영화 <스타 트렉> 시리즈 전반에 대해 살펴봄으로서 제리 골드스미스의 음악이 후속 시리즈 영화음악들에 끼친 영향을 파악하고자 하였다. 본격적인 음악 분석을 위해서는 작품의 줄거리를 발단, 전개, 위기, 절정, 결말로 나눈 뒤 각 단계에 사용된 음악들을 큐시트로 정리하여 음악의 인 앤 아웃 지점을 파악하였다. 나아가 각 음악이 어떠한 방식으로 영상을 돕고 있는지 선율, 화성, 리듬 및 음색과 악기 사용 등 여러 측면에서 상세히 연구하였다. 연구 결과 <스타 트렉>의 영화 음악은 우주선, 외계종족과 같은 비현실적 존재들을 음악으로 묘사하기 위해 다양한 전자 악기와 타악기들을 전통적 오케스트라와 결합하여 독창적인 음색을 만들었으며, 현대음악에서 사용되는 여러 특수 주법들을 사용하여 음향 효과적 사운드를 구현해 내었다. 결론적으로 제리 골드스미스는 전통적인 영화음악 작법과 오케스트라 사용을 기반으로 현대 음악적 연주 기법과 다양한 전자악기를 결합함으로서 자신만의 창의적인 사운드를 만들어 내었음을 알 수 있었다. ;This thesis is a study of the musical characteristics of Jerry Goldsmith based on the analysis of "Star Trek, 1979”. Prior to the start of this study, the vicissitudes of Star Trek film series was explored and Goldsmith's life and the world of his works were examined to understand his musical background and style of his music. Based on these research, the film's plot was divided into five parts: beginning, development, crisis, climax and ending. Each part was then analyzed to find out how the music functioned in various scenes. This thesis concludes that the opening music emphasis on the whole message of the film by placing a dark scene before the start of the film. In addition, various theme motifs for characters and scenes were used to help a smooth flow to the storytelling and even imply the hidden sides of the film. Also, it was founded that Goldsmith used electronic, folk and special percussion instruments as well as traditional orchestral instruments in order to create unique sound effects. He also made colorful sound effects that not only depict scenes in the film, but also express psychological parts by using special instrument techniques of modern music. In conclusion, Jerry Goldsmith created his own sound by uniquely combining modern techniques with various electronic instruments based on traditional film music writing and orchestral use, which led to the establishment of 'Star Trek, 1979' as a great specimen of later SF film music. It is hoped that this thesis contribute to further studies of Jerry Goldsmith's music.
