여성주의 미술의 대안적 실천

Abstract

This study explores the alternatives that feminist art can provide in this era where opposing viewpoints exist in various areas such as gender, politics, and social class. Based on my identity as a female artist in my 20s, I discuss how I got to explore alternative practices of feminist art. I also analyze artworks created from this background. Throughout art history, in artworks portraying women, many male artists have described women from a fragmentized and distorted point of view and have otherized them, while female artists have portrayed the actual lives of women from their own viewpoints. The female artists mentioned in this study have practiced feminist art which elevates the status of disparaged females and expresses various aspects of women. I came to focus on those artists’ autonomous points of view. However, from a contemporary view of a society in which women’s rights have progressed, feminist art in the past only limitedly explained femininity and masculinity. Also, as feminism became politicized, it triggered a violent exclusion of otherized people other than women. I think contemporary feminist art should practice the alternative of expressing the voices of otherized people who cannot be autonomous individuals under male domination. Thus, through my work, I began to express boundaries of conflicts and personal stances which might change in different circumstances, not dichotomies such as gender (male-female), political belief (progressive-conservative), or social class (upper-lower). I practice an alternative to feminist art by asking about the boundaries of conflicts rather than intensifying the strife between men and women. The symbols in my work represent opposing factors such as gender, political creed, and social class. Commonly used symbols are distorted, and boundaries between symbols are blurred. Furthermore, I create softened sculptures with flexible material to express a fluid rather than fixed form. By doing so, rather than adhering to a single perspective, I question the boundaries of perspectives that are inevitably changeable in different situations. The purpose of this study is to seek an alternative to feminist art by questioning the boundaries of conflicts and visualizing various otherized people including women. I hope this paper serves as a stepping stone toward a world that no longer needs feminist art.;본 연구는 젠더, 정치, 계층 등 수많은 입장의 대립이 존재하는 현시대에 여성주의 미술은 어떤 대안을 실천할 수 있는지에 대해 탐구한다. 20대 여성 예술가라는 본인의 정체성을 바탕으로 여성주의 미술의 대안적 실천을 탐구하게 된 과정과 방법 그리고 이러한 배경을 토대로 제작된 작품을 분석하고자 한다. 미술사 속 여성을 표현한 작품들을 살펴보면, 남성 작가는 단편적이고 왜곡된, 타자화된 여성을 묘사한 경우가 많지만 여성 작가는 시선의 주체로서 실제 여성의 삶을 작품에 투영해왔다. 본 연구에서 언급할 많은 여성 작가들은 폄하된 여성성을 격상시키고, 다양한 여성상을 표현하며 ‘여성주의 미술’을 실천해왔다. 본인은 이러한 작가들이 가지는 주체적인 시선에 관심을 가지고 주목하게 되었다. 하지만 기존의 여성주의 미술이 여성성과 남성성을 규명하는 기준은 과거보다 여권(女權)이 신장된 동시대의 기준으로 보았을 때 한계가 있었다. 또한 여성주의 정치화의 흐름 속에서 여성 외의 타자화된 존재를 배제하는 폭력을 야기하기도 했다. 이에 본인은 남성 중심적 권력 하에 주체가 되지 못한 타자들의 목소리를 나타내는 것이 동시대의 여성주의 미술이 실천해야 할 대안이라고 보고, 성별(여성/남성), 정치적 신념(진보, 보수), 계층(상위/하위)등 양분화된 대립이 아닌 상황에 따라 달라지는 개인의 입장과 대립의 경계를 작품으로 표현하기 시작했다. 본인은 여성과 남성의 대립 구도를 강화하기보다 대립의 경계는 무엇인지 질문하는 방식으로 여성주의 미술의 대안을 실천한다. 본인의 작품에 등장하는 기호들은 성별, 정치적 신념, 계층 등의 대립항을 상징한다. 통용되는 상징을 비틀고 상징 사이의 경계를 흐린다. 또한 유연성을 가진 재료로 단단함이 해체된 조각을 만들어 확정된 형태가 아닌 유동적인 형태를 표현한다. 이 방법들을 통해 모든 대립의 상황에서 단일한 입장을 고수하기보다 상황에 따라 유동적일 수밖에 없는 입장의 경계를 질문한다. 본 연구의 목표는 대립의 경계를 질문하면서 여성을 포함한 타자화된 수많은 존재들의 가시화를 통해 여성주의 미술의 대안을 모색하는 것이다. 이 글이 더이상 여성주의 미술이 필요하지 않은 세상으로 향하는 징검다리가 되길 바란다.
