비정형적 인체 조각을 통한 인간 존재의 모호성 표현

Abstract

This study discusses my work, which contemplates the incomplete nature of today’s humanity, and gives form to human existence, as one cannot gaze upon oneself. Based on my work, I aim to investigate what atypical figurative sculptures represent in terms of art history, and to analyze my figurative sculptures, which give shape to ambiguous things in atypical forms. I perceive today’s humans as beings that are endlessly manipulated by chaotic externalities, and express the ambiguity of humanity, which cannot be described in singular form. Human existence, which makes even myself feel alien, disturbed me, as I was forced to face the fact that a human being is never solely composed of oneself. Our ego is not formed within our individual selves, but molded and created by external forces. We mistake it as our nature. Once this layer of delusion is removed, we are faced with our own vacuous reflections, and become buried in false anxiety and confusion. In order to escape this chaos that endlessly restricts us, we search for an indomitable quality in human nature; however today’s human beings are not fixed beings. I began sculpting a faint, hollow, and unfixed human figure. Leaving undefined what is ambiguous, expressed as a lump of chaos itself. Rigid materials such as metal are fabricated into atypical forms consisting of curved lines to induce illusions of movement, and the human face is twisted and distorted, crumpling existing standardized perspectives. Such actions, carried out by me, give a quality of movement to the static sculpture, making a precise capture of it difficult. Additionally, upon a chance encounter with an object in the streets, I may consider it to be a human being without essence, and spontaneously draw out a fuzzy image from within it, or express the multiplicity of the changing human ego; I’ve continuously produced the human figure and visualized chaos. Through my work, I aimed to give form to the inner aspect of humanity — which cannot be defined by language — and to face the incomplete nature of humanity itself.;본 연구는 오늘날 인간의 불완전함에 대해 고찰하고 스스로 자신을 바라볼 수 없는 인간 존재를 조형화한 본인의 작업에 관한 논고이다. 본고를 통해 연구자의 작업을 바탕으로 미술사에서 비정형적 인체 조각이 의미하는 바를 살펴보고, 명확하지 않은 것을 모호한 형태로 형상화하는 연구자의 인체 조각에 대해 분석하고자 한다. 연구자는 오늘날의 인간을 혼란스러운 외부에 의해 끊임없이 조작되는 존재로 인식하고 단일한 형상으로 설명될 수 없는 인간의 모호함을 표현한다. 본인조차 낯설게 느껴지는 인간 존재는 연구자에게 혼란을 주었고 온전히 자신으로만 이루어진 인간은 존재하지 않다는 사실을 마주하게 했다. 우리의 자아는 개별 인간 내부에서 형성되는 것이 아닌 자신의 외부에 의해 주물러지고 만들어진다. 우리는 그것을 자신의 본연의 것으로 착각하고 살아간다. 그러한 착각의 껍질이 벗겨졌을 때 우리는 비어있는 자신을 마주하게 되고 허황된 불안과 혼란에 뒤덮인다. 끊임없이 자신을 가두는 혼란에서 벗어나기 위해 우리는 견고한 인간 본질을 찾고자 하지만 오늘날의 인간은 고정적이지 않다. 연구자는 고정되지 않고 비어있는, 흐릿한 인간을 조형하기 시작했다. 모호한 것을 규정짓지 않고 혼란한 덩어리 그 자체로 표현한 것이다. 금속과 같은 견고한 물질을 곡선으로 이루어진 비정형적 형태로 제작하여 일렁이는 듯한 착각을 일으키거나 우리가 일반적으로 인식하는 인간의 얼굴을 비틀고 왜곡하여 기존의 정형화된 시각을 일그러트린다. 이와 같은 연구자의 작업은 멈춰있는 조각에 유동성이라는 흐름을 부여하여 조각을 정확하게 포착할 수 없게 만든다. 이외에도 연구자는 길을 걷다 우연히 마주한 사물을 본질 없는 인간으로 대면하여 즉흥적으로 사물 내부의 몽롱한 형상을 드러내거나 변화하는 인간의 다중적인 자아를 표현하는 등 계속해서 인간을 만들어내고 혼란을 가시화했다. 연구자는 이러한 작업을 통해 언어로 정의할 수 없는 인간 내면을 드러내고 불완전한 인간을 스스로 마주하고자 하였다.
