- Abstract
;A growing number of European countries institute national or regional bans on expressing religious symbols. This law mainly affects the female Muslim populations who are being marginalized from society. This paper mainly explains the lack of strong opposition from women’s groups. It claims that the lack of opposition to and support for anti-headscarf bans is due to a conflicting understanding of gender equality in regards to the meaning of the hijab and the women who wear it. It starts with some background information on European anti-headscarf legislation. It then examines the literature on the interaction between interest groups and public opinion, as well as the literature on hijab discourse by liberal and post-colonial feminists. This thesis gives an empirical case study of the activities of European women's groups, building on the scholarly debate.
