뮤지컬 <웨스트 사이드 스토리(West Side Story)>에 나타난 작곡가 레너드 번스타인(Leonard Bernstein)의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 작곡가 레너드 번스타인(Leonard Bernstein, 1918~1990)의 작품 <웨스트 사이드 스토리(West Side Story, 1957)>에 나타난 음악적 특징을 연구하고자 한다. 대본, 음악, 춤이 각각 고유한 성격과 특성을 보여주고 동시에 상호 결합한 대표적인 작품으로 알려진 이 뮤지컬을 연구 대상으로 하여 지휘자로 알려진 레너드 번스타인이 어떠한 음악적 표현을 통해 20세기 뮤지컬 스토리를 표현하였는지 연구하였다. 또한 뮤지컬 요소 중 하나인 춤을 극의 언어로 보여주기 위해 어떤 요소를 사용했는지 연구하였다. 1957년 오리지널 캐스팅으로 발매된 16곡 외에 공연에서 연주되는 배경음악을 더하여 총 34곡을 분석하였고 작품 전체의 박자, 조성, 리듬, 악기 구성 등을 중점으로 분석하여 전체적인 음악의 흐름과 음악적 특징을 연구하였다. <웨스트 사이드 스토리>는 셰익스피어의 희곡 <로미오와 줄리엣(Romeo and Juliet)>을 1950년 당시 미국의 사회적 이슈를 작품에 녹여 연출하였다. 당시 진지한 내용의 뮤지컬이 유행하던 추세였으며, 작품에 등장한 곡이 큰 유행을 하면서 1957년 초연은 큰 흥행에 성공했다. 이후 세계 곳곳에서 현재까지 왕성하게 공연되고 있으며, 최근까지 영화로도 제작되며 다양한 형태로 리메이크 되고 있다. 특히 작품에서 등장하는 9개의 곡은 25분으로 구성된 <Symphonic Dances from West Side Story>로 짜여져 연주를 위한 관현악곡으로 편곡되었고, 다양한 오케스트라 공연에서 연주되고 있다. 레너드 번스타인의 곡은 70년이 지난 지금까지도 초연에 연주된 곡을 그대로 사용하며 여러 형태로 사랑받고 있음을 보여준다. 레너드 번스타인은 이 작품에서 인스트루멘탈 곡을 노래곡 사이에 배치하였다. 이는 뮤지컬의 흐름을 원활하게 도와주고 관객들의 흥미를 더욱 불러일으킨다. 또한 당시 유행하던 하드밥 재즈를 뮤지컬에 녹여 극의 어두운 분위기를 효과적으로 나타내었으며 춤의 효과를 극대화했다. 이러한 시도는 댄스 뮤지컬 흥행에 시작이 되어 뮤지컬의 영역을 확장해나갔다. 이 작품을 연구하며 레너드 번스타인의 춤을 향한 음악적 재치가 돋보이는 작품이었음을 확인하였다. 본 논문의 연구가 앞으로의 뮤지컬 음악과 댄스 뮤지컬 음악에 보탬이 되길 바란다.;This study examines the musical characteristics of the composer Leonard Bernstein(1918-1990) in the work West Side Story(1957). Musicals are a combination of the three elements of song, dance, drama. The form of a book musical, which is the basis of the current musical form. Since then, Expressionist music has been influenced by modern music, and the jazz harmony grammar has also had a lot of influence on American musicals, resulting in musical expansion. The purpose of the study is to study the musical characteristics of composer Leonard Bernstein, and to study what dance music was composed to represent the dramatic flow of dance in almost all scenes, reinterpreting the conflict of teenage gangs as symphonic dance at the time. Prior to this, the overall plot of "West Side Story" and the structure of the work were identified, and how the composer Leonard Bernstein solved it through musical elements such as the composition, rhythm, and harmony of the entire song was studied. Like other musicals, "West Side Story" has basic musical components (prelude, aria, show staffer, and reprise), but it has the character of a dance musical with many instrumental songs only for dance. The insertion of the instrumental was inserted as background music to a scene in which only lines were performed, further maximizing the emotions of the characters and facilitating the flow of the play by being located between scene conversion or play conversion. In addition, the prominent melodies and characteristics of the music used right in front or behind were used in instrumental versions of about 30 bars to facilitate the flow of songs and songs. In this work, called the modern version of <Romeo and Juliet>, the confrontation between two different tribes is expressed in two countries that are opposed to the energy of teenagers using the representative dance music genre and traditional instruments of each country. In addition, the music of two men and women singing the love of two different men and women was juxtaposed with the song of two opposing factions, and a surprise song was arranged to compare the impossible love between the two men and women added to the fun of the play. Leonard Bernstein actively expanded the musical's scope by incorporating jazz into the musical using modern techniques (syncopation, a big leap in melody) and jazz harmony. This modern technique melted throughout the work and was seen as an overall feature, and Leonard Bernstein's musical wit to express dance was confirmed. Musicals are still getting closer to the public, with many remakes still being remade. In addition, many dance musicals such as "Cats" and "Lion King" have been loved so far. Therefore, for the development of musical music, continuous musical research on existing musicals is needed. Furthermore, a lot of effort will be needed to foster musical musicians. We expect this paper to contribute to future dance musical music.
