Lee Hoiby의 ＜The Shining Place＞ 분석 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 호이비(Lee Hoiby, 1926-2011)의 연가곡 《The Shining Place(빛나는 곳)》에 관한 연구이다. 본 연구의 목적은《The Shining Place》를 분석함으로써 디킨슨의 시와 곡에 사용된 호이비의 음악적 기법들 사이에 나타나는 연관성을 고찰하는 데에 있다. 음악을 감정의 소통이라 여겼던 호이비는 20세기에 주요한 음악적 양식인 12음 기법과 음렬주의가 감정을 배제한 음악이라는 이유로 이를 지양했다. 그리하여 그는 20세기의 작곡가임에도 불구하고 감정과 내면을 자유롭게 표현하던 낭만주의 음악을 선호하였으며 그의 음악적 특징은 낭만주의 음악에 영향을 받았다. 19세기 낭만주의에 활동했던 미국의 여류시인인 디킨슨(Emily Dickinson, 1830-1886)은 종교적인 이유로 자유롭지 못했던 그녀의 내면세계와 자아를 중심으로 하여 시를 다뤘다. 그녀는 억압되어있는 내면세계를 표현하기 위해 죽음, 불멸과 같은 소재를 사용하였고 함축적이고 경구적인 시어를 통해 그녀의 정서를 담아낸다. 이렇게 내면세계를 주로 다루던 디킨슨의 시는 호이비의 음악의 동기가 되었다. 본 연가곡에서는 시 문학에 상응하는 호이비의 음악적 특징을 찾아볼 수 있다. 먼저 반주부와 성악부가 동등한 위치를 갖기 위해 유기적인 관계를 이룬다. 동시에 반주부는 가사에서 나타나는 사건들을 음악적으로 형상화 시키며 상호보완적인 관계를 맺는다. 또한 가사의 집중을 위해 시어의 이미지에 따른 화성적 변화를 통해서 시적인 표현과 묘사에 중점을 둔다. 각 시의 내용과 분위기에 맞게 선법, 조성, 중심음을 사용하여 음악을 구성하였고 불협화음이나 반음계 그리고 비화성음과 같은 화성적 장치를 통해 시어를 표현하고 있다. 이러한 표현들은 가사와 밀접한 관계를 맺고 가사를 선명하게 표현하는 것에 효과적으로 작용한다. 이와 같은 《The Shining Place》의 음악은 20세기의 음악적 어법들보다는 낭만 음악적 어법이 주를 이루며 현대 시대에 작곡된 음악이지만 낭만 음악의 색채가 느껴진다. 결과적으로 디킨슨의 시와 호이비의 음악은 상호 밀접한 영향 관계를 맺는다는 것을 알 수 있다. 개인의 감정, 경험을 중시하던 낭만주의의 문학 사조는 호이비가 음악을 표현하고 음악의 목적을 이루기 위해 적합한 예술적 흐름인 것으로 판단되며 디킨슨의 시는 호이비의 음악적 기법을 나타내는 것에 효과적으로 사용되었다. ;This thesis focuses on Lee Hoiby's (1926-2011) song cycle "The Shining Place." The purpose of this thesis is to examine the connection between Hoiby's musical techniques used in his songs and Dickinson's literary techniques used in her poems through analyzing “The Shining Place. Hoiby refrained from dodecaphony and serialism, the dominant musical techniques in the 20th century, for he thought they were techniques devoid of emotions. This was influenced by his musical stance that regarded music as a communication of emotions. Although he was a composer of the 20th century, he preferred Romantic music that freely expressed human feelings and interiority, which led his music to be heavily influenced by the musical techniques of the Romantic era. An American female poet Emily Dickinson, who is known to have been active during the Romantic era in the 19th century, poetically expressed her inner world and self, which was otherwise hindered due to religious reasons at the time. To portray her oppressed inner world, she dealt with issues such as death and immortality. The choice of symbolic and connotative words in her poetry further captures her sentiments. Dickinson’s poetry that explored human interiority as such significantly influenced Hoiby’s music. “The Shining Place” represents Hoiby’s particular musical characteristics that corresponds to poetic literature. First, the accompaniment part and the vocal part form an organic relationship to have an equal position. Also, the accompaniment unit expresses the lyrical contents in a musical form to constitute a complementary relationship with the lyrics. Furthermore, Hoiby’s music pivots on poetic expression and illustration through harmonic changes according to the imagery of poetry, to direct the more focus on the lyrics. Hoiby’s use of melody, composition, and central sound befits the content and atmosphere of each poem. His way of expressing Dickinson’s poetic words is through his use of cacophony, semitone, and non-harmonic tones. These musical expressions that are tightly linked with the lyrics work to clearly convey the lyrics. “The Shining Place” is mainly comprised of Romantic music’s characteristics rather than the 20th century music’s, which imbues Romantic touch to the music although it was composed in the contemporary era. In conclusion, Dickinson’s poetry and Hoiby’s music have a close relationship with a strong influential tie. The Romantic literary trend that valued individual emotions and experience was an appropriate artistic channel for Hoiby to express his music and achieve his artistic goals. For this purpose, Dickinson’s poems were effectively utilized in Hoiby’s musical techniques.
