영화 <말레피센트(Maleficent)>의 음악 분석을 통한 제임스 뉴튼 하워드(James Newton Howard)의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 영화 음악 작곡가 제임스 뉴튼 하워드(James Newton Howard, 1951-)가 작곡을 담당한 영화 <말레피센트(Maleficent)>의 음악적 특징에 관한 연구이다. 판타지 영화는 동화의 요소를 활용하거나, 소설에서 각색하여 환상 요소와 미지의 세계를 구현시켜 다양한 범주로써 끊임없이 발전되고 있다. 애니메이션에서만 구현되었던 시각적인 환상 세계는 디지털의 놀라운 발전을 통해 실사화가 가능해졌으며, 이러한 중심에는 영화 <말레피센트>가 있다. 이 작품은 애니메이션 <잠자는 숲속의 공주(Sleeping Beauty, 1959)>에서 소재를 새롭게 각색하여 그린 작품으로, 원작과 달리 마법 요소의 환상성이 극 전반에 걸쳐 일어나는 모험 스릴러 판타지 영화이다. 이 영화는 특수 효과 아티스트이자 영화감독인 로버트 스트롬버그(Robert Stromberg, 1965-)의 연출을 통해 큰 영향력을 발휘하였으며, 작곡가 제임스 뉴튼 하워드의 음악이 극적인 효과를 창출하는데 중요한 요소로 사용되었다. 하워드는 편향된 음악에 치중되지 않으며 현재까지 다양한 할리우드 감독들과 활발한 예술적 교류를 이어오고 있는 작곡가이다. 총 140편이 넘는 수많은 작품 경력을 통해 드라마, 코미디, 액션, 다큐 등에 이어 환상적인 판타지 장르까지 범위를 넓게 확장시켜 현재까지 영화 음악 작곡가의 명성을 꾸준히 이어오고 있다. 수많은 영화들을 연이어 맡게 되며 성공적으로 입지를 다질 수 있었던 하워드만의 음악 어법을 영화 <말레피센트>를 통해 연구하고자 한다. 본 연구자는 제임스 뉴튼 하워드의 음악적 특징을 분석하기에 앞서, 하워드가 참여한 다양한 판타지 영화 음악의 특징 연구와 작곡가의 생애와 작품 세계의 연구를 통하여 그의 음악적 경향과 배경적 요소를 파악하였다. 영화의 줄거리를 바탕으로 발단, 전개, 위기, 절정, 결말로 나누어 음악의 인 앤 아웃(In & Out)을 파악한 뒤 큐시트를 작성하여 영상과 음악의 상관관계를 중심으로 분석하였다. 이러한 연구를 토대로 분석한 결과, 제임스 뉴튼 하워드는 고전적인 오케스트레이션과 다양한 현대 음악적 기법을 적절히 조화시켜 자신만의 음악 어법으로 영화를 표현하였음을 알 수 있었다. 영화의 오프닝 음악에서 판타지 요소의 특성을 살린 주인공 모티브를 사용하여 영화의 배경과 전반적인 분위기를 연출하였으며, 전체적인 스토리텔링을 위하여 음악이 계속해서 흐르는 wall-to-wall 음악 기법을 사용하였다. 또한 각각의 주요 등장인물을 나타내는 모티브와 주인공의 감정의 변화와 여러 상황을 나타내는 테마를 사용하여 연속적인 이야기로서 영화의 내러티브의 기능을 수행하였으며, 영화의 화려한 마법의 판타지적 요소를 표현하기 위해 다양하고 실험적인 현대음악 기법을 사용하여 사운드를 풍부하게 하여금 음향 효과적인 사운드를 구현하였다. 제임스 뉴튼 하워드의 <말레피센트>는 감독이 사용한 독창적인 연출과 밀접한 상관관계를 가지며 기능하고 있었으며, 다양한 장면 전환에 맞추어 즉각적인 동기화를 이루어 현 시대적인 감각적 어법을 구현하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 본 논문의 연구를 통해 앞으로도 제임스 뉴튼 하워드를 포함한 다양한 영화 음악가들의 작품을 연구하는 데에 유익한 선행 연구 자료로 활용되기를 바란다. ;This thesis is a study on the musical characteristics of the film <Maleficent>, which was composed by James Newton Howard (1951-), a film music composer. Fantasy films are constantly developing into various categories by using elements of fairy tales or adapting them from novels to realize fantasy elements and unknown worlds. The visual fantasy world that was only realized in animation has been made possible through the remarkable development of digital, and at the center of this is the film <Maleficent>. This work is a novel adaptation of the subject matter from the animation <Sleeping Beauty (1959)>, and unlike the original work, it is an adventure thriller fantasy film in which the fantasy of magical elements occurs throughout the play. The film exerted great influence through the direction of special effects artist and film director Robert Stromberg (1965-), and composer James Newton Howard's music was used as an important factor in creating dramatic effects. Howard is a composer who does not focus on biased music and has continued active artistic exchanges with various Hollywood directors to this day. Through his career with more than 140 works, he has continued to maintain his reputation as a film music composer until now by broadly expanding the scope to fantastic fantasy genres following drama, comedy, action, documentary, etc. Through the film <Maleficent>, I would like to study Howard's own musical usage, which he was able to successfully establish as he was in charge of numerous films one after another. Before analyzing the musical characteristics of James Newton Howard, this researcher identified his musical tendencies and background elements through a study of the music characteristics of various fantasy film music in which Howard participated and a study of the composer's life and work world. Based on the plot of the film, it is divided into beginning, development, crisis, climax, and ending to understand the music in and out, and then write a cue sheet to analyze the correlation between video and music. As a result of analysis based on these studies, it was found that James Newton Howard expressed the film with his own musical language by appropriately harmonizing classical orchestration and various modern musical techniques. In the opening music of the film, he used the main character motif that made use of the characteristics of fantasy elements to create the background and overall atmosphere of the film, and used a wall-to-wall music technique in which music continuously flows for the overall storytelling. In addition, it performed the narrative function of the film as a continuous story using motifs representing each major character and themes representing changes in the protagonist's emotions and various situations. and using experimental modern music techniques to enrich the sound and realize a sound effective sound. James Newton Howard's <Maleficent> was functioning in close correlation with the original direction used by the director, and it was found that it was immediately synchronized with various scene changes to realize the sensuous language of the present age. It is hoped that the research of this thesis will be used as a useful prior research material for studying the works of various film musicians including James Newton Howard in the future.
