Rebecca Clarke의 Sonata for Viola and Piano에 관한 연구 분석

Abstract

본 논문은 본인의 졸업연주회 연주곡 중 하나인 레베카 헬퍼리히 클라크(Rebecca Helferich Clarke, 1886-1979)의 작품인 Sonata for Viola and Piano에 대한 분석 연구이다. 20세기 초 남성우월주의 사조의 영향을 받던 영국사회에서 클라크는 여성 작곡가로서의 활동에 많은 제약을 받았다. 그녀는 이러한 환경을 이겨내고 비올라를 독주악기로 확립시키는데 큰 역할을 한 작곡자였고 최초로 런던의 프로페셔널 오케스트라에서 정식 여자 단원으로 일한 비올리스트로서 역사에 기록되고 있다. 본 논문에서 다루려는 비올라 소나타는 1919년 버크셔 실내악 축제 작곡 콩쿠르에서 여성 작곡가임을 숨기고 작품을 제출하여 에르네스트 블로흐(Ernest Bloch, 1880-1959)1)의 작품 Suite Hebraique for Viola and Piano와 공동1위를 차지하여 세상에 알려지게 된 곡이다. 클라크가 작곡한 비올라 소나타는 화성적인 짜임새나 그 음역이 남성적이고 화려하며 때에 따라서는 다소 거친 표현도 마다하지 않는 역동적인 곡이다. 소나타 첫 페이지에는 알프레드 드 뮈세(Alfred de Musset, 1810-1857)2)의 시 ‘5월의 밤’ 중 다음의 구절을 클라크가 인용하였다. “시인이여, 너의 류트를 들어라, 젊음의 포도주를. 이 밤은 신의 정맥 속에서 요동치고 있구나.” 이는 작곡가가 표현하고자 하는 느낌을 함축적으로 나타낸다. 이 곡은 당시에 발표되었을 때 아주 혁신적인 음악으로 여겨졌으며 점차 그 진가를 인정받게 되어 현재는 비올리스트의 레파토리 중 대단히 중요한 곡으로 자리매김하였다. 본격적으로 비올라 소나타를 분석 연구하기에 앞서 그녀의 인생과 시대적 작품배경을 살펴본 후 비올라 소나타의 음악적 특징과 그 구성에 대해 연구해보려 한다.;This study analyzes a sonata for viola and piano written by Rebecca Helferich Clarke(1886-1979) who was an English female composer and a violist. In the early 20th century of the male supremacy society, her musical activity was highly restricted since she was a female composer. In spite of the social circumstances, she has been evaluated as an important composer who played the largest role to make viola become a solo instrument as well as the first female member in the professional orchestra of London. <Sonata for Viola and Piano(1919)> studied in this paper won a prize in Berkshire Chamber Music Festival Competition and then became famous. When her piece was submitted to the festival competition, she concealed her gender. And the harmonic structure and the range in this sonata were expressed as powerful and grand sounds as well as showing masculine and rough feature. This work consists of 3 movements including forms of a sonata, a rondo and a rondo sonata. The work shows a classical characteristic of the romantic style in Germany. But the same time, it used pentatonic scale, whole-tone-scale and chromatic scale which are one of features in the impressionist music of the 20th century. Besides the character of each movement is performed clearly but show unity using the cyclic form. Likewise, Rebecca Helferich Clarke well expressed unique characteristics and its own range of viola through her work. I have analyzed the musical feature, forms, harmony and rhythmic elements of her viola sonata in this paper.
